A week or two less to make the level would lead to less last minute entries

On that note, there should be a separation between a signup deadline and a submission deadline. That way, even the people that sign up at the last second have a reasonable time frame for working on stuff.
I can't remember whether Horikawa allowed people to enter the contest after it started, but I personally would have the signup deadline before the contest starts and put an asset or thematic restriction on entries to prevent people from starting early. That should in theory give every contestant the same amount of time.

Hey, here's an idea! Let's use a rule borrowed from Eurovision. Whoever wins the contest has to host the next contest.

Sign up was on going with the contest IIRC.
Personally I'm not too worried about getting an immense amount of entries next time, and the gimmick the contest had was good enough to encourage people to make levels during the contest than before it started. Also, I have a feeling there were a lot of short and easy levels in this contest as none of the judges appeared to be burned out after 272 + 31 levels, so even if there were a ton of entries this contest was still rather manageable.
But if it really does become a thing, a cap at 300 would be best probably (like there can be more than 300 signups since not everyone who signed up made a level, but at most 300 submissions. This could also encourage people to not wait until the last minute).
Also not too keen on making the winner host the next contest, since not only would it be hard to enforce but also that not all winners are the best judges or hosts.

They don't, and they're not necessarily bad, either.

I'm excited to see all the levels. Even the ones that'll get us going "oh cod who the fish thought that was a good idea"

Yeah, I kind of forgot to put a smiley on that last sentence. Wasn't serious at all.

I would normally agree, but she convinced me last-minute to make a level within a day, and I'm quite happy with the outcome.
We DID get a lot more 1-screen joke levels this time around. But that said, I think giving people like Dito an opportunity is worth it.
Good score confirmed. :P

That's usually the culprit in SMBX stuff, particularly contests; everyone wants to use their own favorite music for their stage, and because it's a contest (especially this one where we weren't really allowed to talk about our levels) there's little to no chance of people using the same music outside of the stock musics included with the engine.
