Boskeopolis Land

If anyone’s e’er wondered why I only seem to exist when raocow plays Wario Land, Donkey Kong Country, or Sonic 3D Blast, it’s ’cause I spend most o’ my time working on this game I’ve been working on for mo’ than 3 years so far.

It’s a platformer, heavily inspired by, well, Wario Land & Donkey Kong Country, as well as rom hacks & many other platformers ( such as the world-famous platformer, Cool Spot ), & based on a short story series I’ve been writing for almost a decade now.

The game has a few quirky mechanics:

Each level has a level goal, which are shown to the player @ the beginning o’ the level sort o’ like WarioWare. Most levels just have “Collect the keycane” as the goal, which is just getting to the end, basically; but there are others, such as defeating all enemies, surviving for a certain amount o’ time, & collecting a certain amount o’ money ( called ₧ in-game ). There are also goals for things to avoid to not lose the level, such as avoiding money, avoiding running out o’ time, & a red-light-green-light level where you have to avoid moving while the screen is red.

( Note: I came up with this idea years before Super Mario Maker 2… but to be fair, it’s obvious that both o’ us stole this idea from rom hacks’ love for gimmick levels. )

The other quirk is the level arrangement: rather than going from theme to theme in the form o’ theme-coherent worlds, this game has “cycles”, which has the player go in a circle, spiraling toward the center o’ the level, cycling through each level theme in each cycle, so that the 1st level o’ each “cycle” has a city theme, the 2nd a forest theme, & so on.

I have a bit mo’ info ’bout this project @ https://www.boskeopolis-land.com

I also have a bunch o’ blog articles wherein I write ’bout the development o’ this game, from day 1 to the latest level I completed.

I also have a bunch o’ YouTube videos showcasing various levels o’ the game

&, finally, I have a GitHub page with the source code. Though I warn you that, since I was still getting o’ the hang o’ game programming when I started this project, this code is very sloppy & bipolar.

If any Windows user is interested in actually playing this, I can look into compiling it for Windows ( since I work on this on Linux ). Unfortunately, I don’t have a Mac yet, though.

This certainly looks cool, and like it has a lot of work put into it.

I'd love to give this a shot. The music has a great vibe and the controls look pretty tight and responsive. :rao:
