DemoQuest (tentative title) OR: a GMS2 thing

hi all

for a while now I've been working on a project starring our favorite lovable guy, raocow!! Started out in Zelda Classic, but I've moved it over to GMS2 for better control with my ideas. It's still heavily WIP, but I wanted to go ahead and show some screenshots I have of it and ask an important question

Now, the question... Right now, the game stars raocow. The plot: raocow opens a game on his computer and suddenly it sucks him into it, and he has to play it through and try to escape. But...now I'm wondering, should it star Demo instead? As you can see in some of the gifs, I already have Demo sprites, so it's not hard to swap them over- I'd just have to make some new ones for the proper items, and off we go. I'm not sure what the right path to take is- what do you all think?

Hmm, I think there's more stuff to work off of if you pick Demo, since there's already been so many powerups and whatnot, and while Demo is a raocow character, she might have more reach outside the raocow audience. But aside from that, there's no particular reason why controlling rao wouldn't work.

Also, really digging the UI elements! Everything looks great so far.

Hmm, that's a good point- I hadn't considered reach outside the raocow audience. The only issue with your advice of more to work off of with Demo is that... I don't really want to limit myself to "she gets powerups from veggies". An explicit ability of the ABCDs, sure, but I feel that's actually MORE limiting than this assortment of weapons I already have. Cacti give her fireballs, sure- but what gives her the ability to shoot arrows? I'd have to change them to something like an eye-laser, or make it be the fish-barrel powerup. It feels...kinda lazy, compared to Demo finding a way to make use of actual tools and weapons like a bow.

Though admittedly it'd make more sense for Demo to get a dash from the dash item- it's currently a Durian. Could change it to a veggie given ABCDs get powers from veggies, not fruit.

as the baptizer of serac i say you should absolutely keep the durian. durians are horrid, pungent little beasts. they deserve to be in the ass mutt canon as the personification of an unstoppable force spreading wanton destruction and dismay across the land

Oh yeah, for sure, I meant is as you have a base to work off of, not that you wouldn't be able to do something else, just that you don't have to start from scratch with the world building in a sense, but you should definitely give the game it's own flavor.

Have a new Demo walk cycle to fit her now being the playable character! And I'll also be changing the project name to DemoQuest for the time being.

whoops i haven't posted an update in a while!! have some stuff:

The game opens with a prompt for controls if your config file has none set up. This way, instead of asking people to use controls they may not like to set ones they do like, they can just do it before gameplay!

File select! It's a work in progress, but here's how it looks right now. Has functionality for loading, copying, and deleting!

So hey, I haven't made an update in a WHILE! Sorry 'bout that! Got burnt out on developing this, so I started developing what I EXPECTED would be a small project I could finish in like a month or two and then get back to this, but then I got burnt out on THAT! So back to DemoQuest!

Demo now has an auto-revive feature! If she has this delicious badge-shaped heart and loses all her health, it'll revive her! How wonderful!

She can also swing a leek around to hurt things now! Hooray for unnecessary destruction!

it's true

she might be too strong, though!!! (aka I may need to tone down the amount of stars that are spawned ahahaha... it's supposed to be a weak weapon that'd need to hit a lot of times to deal significant damage)

Oh man an update. Been working on the message system. Now I can run scripts during text! Just small stuff right now, I probably won't use it too much, but hey, at least I can do silly stuff like killing the player in the middle of text! :p
