The Girl with the Scarf : Proof I'm not a good developer.

Post by XerX »

'The Girl and the Scarf' was a project started by me sometime during March of 2013. Over the course of those years, a lot has been changed, redone, and replanned. I've gone through many engines, and many character designs for this game. I'm still going at it.

So what's the plan?
I plan to finish this game, even if it takes me forever. My goal was originally to finish a project, and I'm choosing to stick by this one.

The game is meant out to be an Action Platformer, with some RPG elements and puzzles as well. Most of the focus is Action and Platforming however.

Who are the characters?
There are two confirmed main characters, and possibly another less important character confirmed. The main protagonist goes by the name of Bufanda.

Do you have any screenshots?
Of the new engine? No, not currently, as it was just recently started and won't be polished for a little while. Older screenshots, I do have, but they aren't going to be accurate.

Why are you taking so long to release this game??!?!? I want to play it now!!
Please bear with me. I am a very busy individual, who goes to college, and tries to work, and drawing and coding while I can. Because of many technical difficulties, limitations, etc, I've been pushed way behind actual schedule for this game. Fear not though, as I do plan on finishing it!

Nice to see this once again! So is it still being developed in GM:Studio, or is there a different software being used now? At any rate the physics look sweet!

what kind of movement abilities are you thinking of adding? Wall sliding/jumping would be pretty cool, and maybe you could utilize the sloped terrain somehow, maybe by going all ball mode and bouncing off at an angle using momentum to fling you places.

One of the major gimmicks (I guess you can call it that) is the use of the scarf. It can be used in a variety of ways, not limited to : parachute, grapple hook/rope, pulling objects from a distance, and picking up hefty objects.

I thought about wall jumping, but I'm not sure I want to implement it.

BTW this isn't any normal scarf. ;)

If you look towards the top, you can see a small glimpse of a bouncing heart. It's going back and forth between two slopes.

Yeah depending on the speed the items are moving they bounce back. Also small update. They now start off going in a random direction, and they now disappear after 1000 frames. (About 15-ish seconds).

Probably a bad example, a lot of the stars got stuck between two walls haha. I'm not sure what you're thinking exactly though.

The bouncing stars as well as the style gives me a bit of a Gimmick! vibe.
I dunno if this game is any inspiration to you, but it certainly looks interesting!

I've never heard of Gimmick! before, but I adore the style of it, and I can see where you'd be coming from thinking I was inspired by it, even a little. It looks cute.

But yeah, first time I heard of it. :P

Ooooh, pretty cool! How do you shoot the stars? is it like SMB's fireballs or can you aim them?

also, a couple things:

you should download one of these really tiny fonts to use for testing, so you can have more debug info without clogging the screen with that huge font. (i use the first one in that list, 04b-03.)

and tone down the shaking a bit. what i did in my project was have a shake value that you can set and then it subtracts itself by 1 each step until it hits 0 again, and then move the camera to random positions based around where it really should be, and the distance it moves is based on the shake value. you can see this in action here.

Right now, it's pretty much the same as SMB3's fireballs, even when holding the up key and pressing the shoot key to arc them more.

And thanks for the links to the minimal fonts. I've been using sprite fonts so I grabbed a set already made. (Not that I plan on keeping that specific font around.) :P

And I've been wondering how I would do that camera shake effect. I agree the one I have is a bit too overkill. I'll try your method out.
