MAGAW: Week 2 (Teach me something!)
MAGAW: Week 2 (Teach me something!)
... magaw? is that a thing? magaw.
i havent been making games lately so i'm proposing this as a way to exercise my creativity
if i end up being the only participant it's fine, but I thought somebody else might be interested too and i'd love to have a partner
MAGAW: Make a game a week
Flex your game design muscles and challenge your creativity by creating a game in a week.
Each Monday, a theme will be posted. Everyone who wants to participate will have until the following Sunday to make a game which uses that theme in an interesting way.
Sunday is showoff day, but you're encouraged to post teasers before then.
You're welcome to develop in anything you want, but something easy to share would be best. If you want other people to play your games, the best way for that to happen is to target the web.

This sounds really fun! Not sure if I'll participate, but I'll try to play all the made games!

Oh man, sounds like a good way to get out of the period of laziness I've been in lately.
Re: Make a game a week
i would post some of the things i've put together previous times doing game a week type things but thatd involve working out how to compile them
for example, here's a mechanics "toy" for the theme gravity:
(I turned this into a game later in the week - the full thing is available on github but requires xna to build)

Re: Make a game a week
Honestly? This is VERY tempting to try.
But I was caught up last night, uploading a HUGE file for my boss, so it could be mastered.
So in the mean time, I decided to get off my butt, and get to porting this game, into java:
(The original, is a tech demo on RPG-Maker 2000, to show off the possibilities of careful planning.)
So, the progress of THIRTEEN hours of marathon programming?!
...I'm hitting the sack, I haven't slept yet.
This game will likely take several months of development, to get it where it was, previously.

Since Project Showcase is a thing now, shouldn't this thread be in it?

There's a lot of threads that should straight up be carried over into the new forum but somehow I doubt they will be.

Re: Make a game a week
Is this planned to be an ongoing series of themes? Or just a month or so each year?
... Probably.
Re: Make a game a week
continuous for at least 6 weeks or so & then may be a break if people need one
Re: Make a game a week
and the theme for week 1 is: Duplication
make sure to brainstorm and really think of an interesting way to incorporate it into your game & make sure you keep us updated with your progress
if you're stuck for somewhere to start try making a big list (or mind map) of all the ways "duplication" can be interpreted in a game
if you're still stuck then, try just starting with something you have and seeing where it takes you
for technical assistance feel free to pester me in irc

Re: MAGAW: Week 1 (Duplication)
I'm going to make something, too! I already have an idea, so that's out of the way at least! (^____^)
Re: MAGAW: Week 1 (Duplication)
I'm in too. Still brainstorming an idea.

Oh whoops, I misread and thought this was starting on the 10th... Oh well, I have an idea and I think some code that I can use as a base, hopefully I can put everything together in time

Re: MAGAW: Week 1 (Duplication)
Hey I just found this and think it's a great idea.
I used to mess around with game design a lot in college (usually instead of homework), but haven't been able to motivate myself to "get back into it" since "get back into it" seems like such a big intimidating concept. But a weekly thing is really little pressure since I only have time to spit out a prototype. In fact, I only have a couple days left to do something for this first week. But I think I will.

Re: MAGAW: Week 1 (Duplication)
I got a somewhat unfinished yet still playable thing. The basic platformer code and a few of the sprites were reused from an unfinished game I never completed, but the main mechanics are new and some parts of the code have been refined and adjusted to fit those mechanics. Also all of the sounds are placeholder and not mine.
The game is a platformer where you can create clones of your enemies to throw at other enemies. Use the arrow keys to move, press Z to jump, X to throw a ball of magic which will allow you to clone any enemy it touches, and C to toss the clones. The one level is more to show off the different enemy types and mechanics, as I didn't have time to actually design a good level for it. I also don't know why the grass is missing in some parts, but I didn't really have time to fix it as the bug literally just started happening a couple hours ago. Some other features I thought of but didn't have time to make are coin like things that refill a small fraction of health when collected, switches that you would have to send a clone to hit, and an enemy type that you could stand on like a platform.
edit: reuploaded the original upload with cleaner code and a few sounds modified to play smoother
also uploaded a soundless version in case people have issues with the sound

Re: MAGAW: Week 1 (Duplication)
Ooops forgot to post this yesterday:
Download here
Source here
Wrote it in scala and used some shader to reduce color resolution and a frame buffer object to make the rasteration more apparent. I gave up on thursday or friday because i didn't think it was really fun, but i learned something anyway!
Shoot with left mouse button (you should hold it), move with WASD.
Known bugs:

- When fighting the last enemy and you die, the game crashes.
- You can have multiple player instances alive at the same time apparently
