Make A Good Level Contest (SMW) 3 - Discussion
Re: [LAST DAY! PANIC!] Make A Good Level Contest (SMW) 3 - Discussion
Has anyone tried my level? I wanted to get some feedback. I hope it's better than the ones from the previous contests, but I'm not sure if I should submit one more version if that's okay. In the second room w/the chairs, some weird sprites appear for some reason, but I don't see them in Lunar Magic. I'm not sure what could be wrong, but everything else seems to be working fine.

I can't wait for 200 entries to come in in the last 10 minutes!
Re: Make A Good Level Contest (SMW) 3 - Discussion
We have a total of 67 entries.
I know a lot of people like to play the entries prior to watching raocow's LP (this was true for MaGL 1 and 2 at least), so I've included a ZIP in the first post with all of the entries for easy access. The IPS/BPS files are all named according to the user who submitted them. Of course, there are no rankings yet, and these will not be known until the LP kicks off.
Enjoy.

Re: Make A Good Level Contest (SMW) 3 - Discussion
Fuck the extra "save as" dialog box that appears when trying to change levels but wanting to save the current level at the same time. Cost me a really good sub-level rushing to finish it, thus the whole submission got junked at the very last minute.

(I am very happy that the contest turnout was this high and also not ridiculously high.)

Oops, I hope that doesn't affect raocow's playthrough. I forgot to double check it, and I was in a hurry b/c I wanted to get my level done by the deadline, sorry. Maybe, I can fix it and send him the fixed version when he does his playthrough, but I don't know his e-mail address. Thanks for pointing that out.
By the way, I saw raocow playing your entry for a previous contest, and I thought that part w/Mario vs. Browser was funny. How did you do that? I don't know how to do any of those advanced things.

Re: Make A Good Level Contest (SMW) 3 - Discussion
For those of you who have played or plan to play all the levels before the LP, I think it would be interesting to do a self-judgment of your own level in comparison to every other level to reflect on how you did. I'll start it off.
Fun: 30 - The bulk of your score comes from this. Is the level well-designed? Is it fun to play? Is your block/sprite placement reasonable? Is it too long, too short, or just right? Many factors will be judged here, but they will be thoroughly explained in the judging comments.
There were a couple of things I wanted to do but didn't know how to, so I had to adjust the level around for that. I really loved the coin theme I used though, and for those actually paying attention, it's very clever. When you make a wrong move, instead of getting mad, you laugh at it. Since I give multiple paths at the start and there are tons of paths to explore, it feels like a different experience when you replay the level a second or third time. There are no completely unfair paths, and it is hard to actually die unless you aren't paying attention. There is no time limit, so there's no need to worry about dying. For those who hate underwater maze levels, this could easily be a 1/30, but for those who like exploration levels, this could easily be a 30/30, so it really truly depends on the player.
Difficulty: 5 - Is the level consistent with its difficulty? Does it start easy and get harder? Does the curve jump all over the place?
Compared to the two levels I made in SMBX, this level is a complete 360. I find it to be ridiculously easy as long as you're paying attention. The level introduces concepts well and picks them up at the end for the secret exit, so I'd give myself a 4 specifically on the curve.
Creativity: 10 - Have you done something fresh with your level? Did you attempt to bring in some unique gameplay ideas, either modified or vanilla?
I'd give myself a 7/10. From the thousands of levels I've seen raocow and other LPs play and level I have played myself, I have done things in my level that I've never seen done before -- however, the lack of custom graphics made me a little disappointed. I think I did well with the graphics I had at my disposal.
Aesthetics: 10 - Does it look nice? Does it sound nice? This encompasses both graphics and music, 5 points for each.
The graphics fit with the music. The music translates well into SNES sound. If I spent some time learning how to do custom graphics, I could have made it look amazing, but that would require knowledge beyond my current level. So, I'd give myself a 3 for vanilla graphics and a 5 for the music as I loved the music I chose.
Functionality: 5 - Does the level work/play properly? Are there glitches everywhere, or is it a smooth, immersive ride from start to finish? Should be an easy 5 if you playtest your level.
I hope it's a 5. I didn't see anything wrong with the final version of the level I submitted.
Final Judgment: There are some levels that would make me EXTREMELY FUMING MAD if I lost to them, but I, in no way, expect to win. My goal is to be in the top 2/3rds (45th place or higher).
If there is anyone out there who doesn't want to wait until 2017 to get a review (because who knows how long the Super Mario 64 hack will take mirite), then just ask. I'm sure others would be willing to join in as well unless there's some specific rule against that for this thread.

Re: Make A Good Level Contest (SMW) 3 - Discussion
Huh, so... it turns out that one of my Dragon Coins doesn't spawn(?) in a side room, so my level only has four of them when playing. I remember running into an issue a long time ago where hidden blocks appeared already hit when you reached the rooms they were in, but I had no idea why this happened.
As such, I have no idea why this happens either :I

Re: Make A Good Level Contest (SMW) 3 - Discussion
So there's one level in particular (of the 10 I've played so far) that is just so, so awesome in every single way. Genuinely had a smile on my face throughout the entire experience.
Re: Make A Good Level Contest (SMW) 3 - Discussion
Welp, wasn't able to finish despite the last day fever. Maybe next time I will finally remember that placing blocks still takes a lot of time even after you have everything else done. I suppose it gives me the time to expand and polish things at a more leisurely pace until MaGL4 :3
Looking forward to seeing what everyone else made. Especially after that S.N.N. comment. We got a nice amount of entries this time,so I'm expecting lots of quality without the burden of dragging on too long.
