Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - 11 DAYS LEFT
Is there anyone I could ask to playtest the level, once it is complete?

Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - 11 DAYS LEFT
I know flavour isn't the focus of this contest, but can I refer to the original level I picked through dialogue? Like an NPC referring to something that is in the original level? Or is it exclusively supersublteness?
Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - 11 DAYS LEFT
One week left - still plenty of time to make a level!
Err on the side of subtlety, I'd say. Callbacks are nice and all but if you try to do that you run the risk of your dialogue basically being all "HEY GUYS THIS IS THE LEVEL WITH THAT THING, PRETTY COOL HUH?" which is of course -10.Rumis wrote:I know flavour isn't the focus of this contest, but can I refer to the original level I picked through dialogue? Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - ONE WEEK LEFT
I've now submitted my level. Hope I win.
Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - FOUR DAYS LEFT
I give up!
Making a hard thing is kinda hard actually.
Good luck to the rest of you.

Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - FOUR DAYS LEFT
UPDATE:
MASS PING:
Gonna go ahead and extend the deadline to Sunday, July 10th 11:59:59 PM EDT so the unfortunate number of peeps short on time in June have a bit more time to work with and so I don't feel bad watching SGDQ instead of judging >_>
If your level's finished in advance though, do feel free to send it in early! Just make sure to let me know you're very definitely finished with it and I can forward it to Pyro and Enjl so they we can judge it early.

It's interesting that you call it ''hard thing'' because it got me thinking.7NameSam wrote:I give up!

Is there a difference between ''A very hard level'' and ''A kaizo level''? Like.. If I had to guess, it's more acceptable to put repetative block placement in a section of your level? Like classic Kaizo didn't care how stupid floating munchers looked.
Is there a clear difference though? Or did Kaizo just kinda become the term for ''hard mario''?
Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - FOUR DAYS LEFT
I think the term really means something different for everyone these days. When I think of Kaizo, I think of something akin to the original Kaizo games: difficulty that always skirts the border of "reasonable" but never approaches "absurd", challenges that hadn't been seen before, and the sort of level design where every enemy and obstacle (including invisible blocks) is meticulously placed in nothing less than THE most problematic spot available. Capturing the essence of the original, where every decision is part of a devious trap laying in wait for the unskilled or unassuming, is what I'd strive for - because it's in foiling these expertly laid traps that the player derives a sense of great satisfaction.Rumis wrote:It's interesting that you call it ''hard thing'' because it got me thinking.

Other people have different interpretations, though - for some, "Kaizo" is used to describe difficult or unfair level design, regardless of whether the level design in question is good or bad. Some probably even use the term specifically for bad level design. For others, "Kaizo" might simply mean "something difficult", or for others still, the "gotcha" moments the original is famous for. It's not exactly a well-defined term, in my experience. Personally... I'm just hoping to avoid sloppy level design. Good levels are better than bad ones at any difficulty.
(hello, I'm taking part in this)
Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - LEVELS DUE JULY 10TH
Oh huh. WELP, CAN I MAKE A KAIZO LEVEL IN 10 DAYS?
I dunno. Maybe a bad/joke one.

I will be making mine in the same time frame, so... yeah, I think you can make a decent one in the time frame.Katazuki wrote:Oh huh. WELP, CAN I MAKE A KAIZO LEVEL IN 10 DAYS?

Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - LEVELS DUE JULY 10TH
Huh, while making this, I find out that it's ridiculously hard to not hint at whatever I'm remixing. Such limitations that comes with gimmicks.
Welp there goes 10 points.

Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - LEVELS DUE JULY 10TH
One week left again - for real this time!
Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - LEVELS DUE JULY 10TH
Dawn of the final day. Exept it's noon and I already finished.
Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - LEVELS DUE JULY 10TH
Oh huh, it is the last day.
Welp, I don't think I'll make it in time unless I somehow make a miracle happen.

MASS PING:
It is indeed the last day! There are around 14 more hours left until the deadline!
Though honestly given how poor a job of pinging everybody I've been doing I might be a bit lenient about it. >_>

SMBX perma-crashing is what caused me to not have finished by now. (Runtime-error 50003)

Welp, I turned in a thing for the hell of it. Not exactly too happy with it, but as long as it's not last, I'll be okay with it.

Pretty much same here. I pretty much had to pull my self away from Distorted Travesty 3 long enough to make something. I am more disappointed about mine being not hard enough.Katazuki wrote:Welp, I turned in a thing for the hell of it. Not exactly too happy with it, but as long as it's not last, I'll be okay with it.
Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - LEVELS DUE JULY 10TH
Aaand that's a wrap! The deadline has passed with a respectable and terrifying 14 total entries!
HOWEVER!
After some consultation and discussion with The Council of Doom™ the other judges, we've decided to continue accepting submissions!
Here's how it'll work: until the judging is finished we will still accept your submissions, BUT for every day late it is after today you'll be penalised 3 points. It's that simple.
(Today will be free I guess simply because I haven't been home to announce this until now and it's already nearing 6pm here.)
So if you've given up in the face of the looming deadline, well, like, un-give up! You can still get your level in! :D

Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - JUDGING BEGINS - SUBMISSIONS STILL OPEN
That is more than on the first one. Also means one can get points till 17 days from that at latest.
Re: Make a Good Kaizo Level Contest X3 - JUDGING BEGINS - SUBMISSIONS STILL OPEN
So, is pink foxface Pyro, blue robotmanhead Enjl and TVscreen Zyggy? Because if so. Zyggy has a lotta work to do still.
