I was actually going to make a new thread when i was done judging, but this is fine too.

8/31 changelog:
-made an exit warp for the tutorial room and entrance to the main hub
-fixed the lifts for 10th - 4th place
-Katazuki had his Star buried, which messes up the star counter, so I changed it to a normal star(this is the only time Ive changed anyone's level in any degree, it does not affect gameplay in the slightest though)

you can just walk to the end without doing any of the pipes, why? otherwise the actual challenges were not very difficult(and the sound effects got annoying after awhile, partially due to their volume and how much theyre used). Since youre using lua consider re-arranging the level with multiple midpoints or perm events since that seems like the idea you were going for with the pipe checkpoints.

There was 2 jumps that were kind of tricky to do, outside of that the level was pretty much a normal level with an alright gimmick in the second half.

Your design and atmosphere are top-notch as always, but the main focus of this contest is difficulty and its pretty much non-existant.

The option to skip to the star is justified for this level unlike a level I judged earlier. I always liked levels like this, really hard but short with little retry downtime.

Just about everything in this level speaks to me.(and in rhythm no less) The cute disabling of cheating was also great.

I loved the first part with the autoscroll. The rest after that is kind of a blur right now but it was nowhere near as fun as it started.

A pretty different way of doing a collection quest on the second half, was pretty fun. everything before the midpoint just kind of exists.

Pretty sure I broke that puzzle, or was it ever one? Once you get how the shoe glitch works this was super easy.

I spent a whole hour getting the wall clipping down. I hate myself just a little more from playing this; oh and the level itself was pretty good.

I do love the use of the pulleys in the second half. The last one took forever to get down even just once. The tileset is adorable and it really makes the level enjoyable to die on...alot.

No real "glitches" per se but
You can stand on your own thrown stand-on-able NPC mid-flight. With proper timing you can do this without bouncing it off a wall or anything.
You can stand on vegetables if you set them down rather than throw them. This also applies if they're in midair.

3 I abused the one block tall zip as well as another "glitch" I found where if you let go of down after hitting the ceiling you can clip in for a moment and extend your jump.

Somewhere in-between, I'd say. Having the hub be legitimately dangerous would be a nice touch, but it being on par with the levels themselves might be a bit overkill.

Oh damn, I found a bug in my level. I may fix it and resubmit, if that's okay, but I'll do so after my exams. Also, after next week, I can give a hubworld a try, if that isn't taken yet.

EDIT: Well, I found some free time, so I fixed some bugs and made my level a tiiiny bit harder. I'll resubmit it soon, if that's okay!

I feel like the whole "difficulty/kaizo," part could be a little clearer.

The original Kaizo Mario is known for having mostly fake difficulty, ie. stuff you really can't predict. Other difficulty comes in the form of overly precise jumps and movements. The second kind of difficulty is a lot harder to pull off in SMBX while being beatable due to lack of savestates.

What kind of difficulty are we supposed to be aiming for, here? Do we want our levels to be unfair due to unpredictable stuff, overly precise stuff or both? Do we want this stuff to surpass the original hack in these regards, or be more forgiving?

I'm about halfway done with my level more or less, and I think it's pretty good for this contest in that it breaks a lot of design rules and is much more difficult/unfair than my standard fare, but I'm very unclear on what I'm supposed to be aiming for here.

I know it's probably way too late to change anything, but having closely taken a look at the judging criteria, I feel like level design probably should be on there in some form. Creativity and originality could probably be consolidated into one category as well.

Also for the difficulty category, would a 0 mean the level was too easy, while a 10 would be super hard or is it based on how well the difficulty contributes to the level overall or something?

I like this scoring system better. Atmosphere is a pretty basic thing that makes things tolerable at high difficulty.

Thanks for this. I apologise for having to resubmit, but I did find a bug or two in my level that broke it somewhat, and thought I might as well patch up some other things I wasn't too happy with in the process.

Are we expected to use stars as level exits or can we use anything? Stars don't lend themselves to Kaizo traps nearly as well as, say, the SMB3 standard exit, so if we could use those instead I'd prefer as such. I can understand using the stars if it's necessary for the hub, though.

You can always make an ax disguised as a star that triggers a kaizo trap-like event.

I'm probably going to cancel my level. I might still do it but I kinda doubt it with work and such. I suck at allocating my excessively tired free time.
