The "Who does what?" thread! – Character Design Phase GO!

Post by Aposke »

Allright, so contrary to most other engines the Talkhaus has been using for collabs so far, working together on RenPy projects is pretty straight forward.
For a successful Visual Novel, we'll need people who can provide content in the following departments:

Artwork, Music/Sound, Programming, and Writing

Image

Before we can start with the creation of the VN, we'll also need to decide how these people will work together – for example, if we'll have one artist per dating path, if the art should dictate the writing or the other way around, and so on.

With that in mind, this thread is supposed to solve these early organizational problems and give everyone a more-or-less stable position within the collab.

If you want to contribute to the project, please sign up in this thread by filling out one of the tiny little forms we have for each department:

Background Artist
Background Artists draw the game backgrounds. Minimum dimension requirements are 800x600. Judging from the current projected scope of the project, we'll need at least 40 backgrounds or so (don't worry, we won't ask ONE person to do all that work).
If you want to become a background artist for the VN, please provide the following details:

How many years of experience do you have?
Can you adapt your style to fit other people's styles (or even emulate them)?
How many backgrounds are you willing to draw?
Please include a link to some of your previous work
Character Artist
Character Artists draw... well, the characters, duh. You'll need to be good with displaying facial expressions for this position and should also be fairly confident with drawing human anatomy in general. Character artists generally draw a LOT more of the same stuff than background artists, so it might get boring sometimes, but in return, you get to work closer with the writers and will probably have impact on the storylines, as well.
If you want to become a character artist for the VN, please provide the following details:

How many years of experience do you have?
Can you adapt your style to fit other people's styles (or even emulate them)?
How many characters (i.e. routes) are you willing to draw for?
Please include a link to some of your previous work
Music Producer
Makes the bleeps and bloops. A good VN has a wide range of moods, so your music should be able to express that. Musicians generally have the most freedom in VN production, since they don't need to coordinate with writers or artists. Expect to get a theme or mood description thrown at you and be asked to just make something that sounds fitting.
If you want to become a music producer for the VN, please provide the following details:

How many years of experience do you have?
What genres have you worked with so far?
How many tracks are you willing to produce?
Please include a link to some of your previous work
Programmer
Programmers do the technical work. Very important, since RenPy can fully utilize the Python programming language, allowing for high customization and lots of tweaking.
If you want to become a programmer for the VN, please provide the following details:

How many years of experience do you have?
What languages have you worked with before?
Have you ever worked on a collab project that involved programming before?
Writer
Writers come up with great, awesometastic and wonderfully shitty ideas for storylines, conversations and pretty much everything constituting the "Novel" part in "Visual Novel". You should be able to write clearly, concisely and without any major grammar or spelling mistakes. In addition, you'll need to be able to communicate and work together with the character artists in creating scenes and storylines.
We're currently dealing with at least 6 or 7 seperate paths, so if each person writes 2 paths, we'd need at least 3 writers.
If you want to become a writer for the VN, please provide the following details:

How many years of experience do you have?
What genres have you worked with so far?
How many paths are you willing to write for (each path should be at least ~10,000 words)?
Please include a link to some of your previous work
...I think that's it for now. All that's left to say is that I hope to see many creative people sign up and work together! Once we actually got some signups we can start exchanging contact details, maybe open an IRC channel – whatever works best.
I'll be posting my own signup now and I'm hoping many more will follow!

Signing up as a writer!

How many years of experience do you have?
Been writing since I was 8, so... a bit more than 10 years.
What genres have you worked with so far?
Mostly short stories, but I have two unfinished novels on my computer that are about ~30,000 words each. I used to write a lot of adventurous stuff, but nowadays I'm trying my hand at philosophical/surrealist stories.
How many paths are you willing to write for (each path should be at least ~10,000 words)?
I'd write at least one, and if we're lacking more authors, maybe two paths.
Please include a link to some of your previous work
Most of my stuff is in german, but I have a story I wrote for the Talkhaus Writing Contest here. And here's a thing I wrote up as an intro for a Touhou VN I was helping with in 2011.

I'll make some bleeps and bloops! Music producer on deck!

Years of experience:
Two and a half.

What genres have you worked with so far?
Ambient, dubstep, orchestral, world, mild forays with piano work.

How many tracks are you willing to produce?
As many as I can!

Please include a link to some of your previous work

This does not at all stand as a proof of concept of what I'll produce for this collab, the stuff I'll be making for the collab will be much, much different I suspect.

Sticky'd.
I think it's important to show what one is capable of doing, for programming, since it's left out.

Sorry if it seems that way, but I just happened to notice that all the apps except programmer require some sort of evidence, and it felt strange to have that left out.
I have no issue against you (I barely know you) so by all means, please don't leave.

I didn't ask for "samples" because it's pretty freaking easy to just copy-paste some code from github and say "I wrote that!" and 99% of people here (including me) won't notice because they can't even read code.

I don't think anyone would sign up as a programmer just to "troll" people or whatever.

I totally wanna write something for this, even though the whole idea seems a tad insane.
I have had [many] years of experience with writing.
Mostly short, extremely unromantic stories, but I think it would be hilarious to write romance.

Also, it seems we've kinda split it up into paths, but aren't most of these things kind of intertwined? Like, there'll be a number of main events that happen regardless of path, and depending on the choices you make you end up spending more time/becoming more romantically involved with a certain character.

I might be interested in writing, I don't know. I like writing, but I need a better idea of the plot first, and also I want to be creative and do fun things, not generic. Basically this is saying I might be interested but this needs to get farther first also you guys can reject me now before I get too far.

I'm actually in the process of writing up a rough sketch of the first few scenes right now. The first draft of those scenes will be uploaded this week still (I expect it to be about 4 to 5 pages). We have a character artists working on basic sketches for Rikun and raocow, and a possible background artist.
Feel free to keep your eye on the project and try your hand at writing if you want to – we'll definitely need more than one writer, after all, and new faces are always welcome.

I'm totes all over this! I'd definitely like to sign up as a character artist!

How many years of experience do you have?
I've been drawing for approximately 10 years with a focus in character art! I'm currently enrolled in pre-animation and illustration in college.

Can you adapt your style to fit other people's styles (or even emulate them)?
At school my focus is consistency in art and I consider myself to be quite adaptive to other art styles including realistic, semi-realistic, and cartoony.

How many characters (i.e. routes) are you willing to draw for?
I'd like to draw for one or two characters ideally. I think it's important to be consistent in character art and focusing on one or two characters at a time would help that.

Please include a link to some of your previous work

Okay, calm down, Aposke, stay professional...
Err... Your art really good! I remember your A.T.X.S. fanart, but haven't checked out your profile in a while, and I gotta say, the range of new styles you've tried out so far is pretty impressive!
We'd be more than happy to have you on the project!

I was contacted on DeviantArt about this and decided I'd to like help out! The most I could do is just one character path!

How many years of experience do you have?
I've been drawing forever. Have done work on a couple of webcomics, and currently I'm a colorist for 3 different webcomics.

Can you adapt your style to fit other people's styles (or even emulate them)?
Possibly. It depends on how extravagant my style is from theirs. I will certainly try. Though I think I'd enjoy different character's having their own styles for their own paths.

How many characters (i.e. routes) are you willing to draw for?
A single character path/route.

How many years of experience do you have?
+- 3/4 years (As I only count the last few years with having the most experience of the probably 6/7 years I've been drawing, I'm a fast learner and I like experimenting.)

Can you adapt your style to fit other people's styles (or even emulate them)?
If I can get good enough direction, it will be no problem.

How many characters (i.e. routes) are you willing to draw for?
Personally I would be interested in the actual character design. I also don't mind working on poses etc.

Please include a link to some of your previous work:

These are actually some drawings for a personal project of a few characters I have designed.

With Bwarch stepping out of the picture, we don't have anyone on music. I don't really think that we need custom music just for this game.

Royalty free music or possible even some retro or touhou music might work. I don't know what exactly type of music typically permeates this genre, but I'm pretty sure it's not the stuff I typically listen to. I imagine that we could find some/make very soft remixes of the type of music typically found in Talkhaus games.

I'm pretty sure any genre is fine so long as it's appropriate for the scene and/or character.

Application: Writer

Years of experience: A total of eight years, in short. I've been interested in the English language since early childhood; the outgrowth of my interest into actual sustained creative writing was simply a matter of course. I began writing (fairly awful) stories with the aim of self-improvement when I was thirteen, and have continued ever since -- both in fanfiction communities, and original works.

Genres: I've tried almost every genre at some point or another. As I've worked extensively within fanfiction, I tend to specialise in romance, comedy and slice of life. When not concerned with shipping, I like to do mildly parodic works, although I generally steer clear of total deconstruction.

How many Paths?: Depends entirely on the nature of the paths and the characters. I'd like to write at least one, but given my experience I don't find writing ~10,000 words to be a particularly onerous challenge under most circumstances; switching from one path to another is also no problem, as I enjoy jumping around between stories and feel that it refreshes my mind. I think the maximum number of paths I would write for is perhaps 5, or ~50,000 words; however, that's an estimate, since I don't know the particulars of the project and paths yet.

Links to my work: I'll give links to my fanfiction profiles. I don't publish original fiction on the web, since there's the off-chance I could sell it one day. A caveat: my major sins when it comes to publishing fanfiction are editing, certain finer grammar points (my work is always comprehensible, but I sometimes fall afoul of certain arcane rules, since I was never taught grammar specifically in education) and formatting; my work is also of variable quality, since I try to publish as much work as possible to entertain as many people. In my original works, I tend to be much more careful with my presentation; if there's an editor on the design staff, I feel that would solve most concerns I would have about my own work within this project.

My fanfiction.net profile (currently defunct)
My Fimfiction profile (also currently defuct; I mean to get back to it, now I have a working computer)
My talkhaus thread for fanfiction, containing a few recommendations, some transcribed work, and some regrets.
Recommended works are things like Kaleidoscope, Of Pyjamas and Ironic Harmonies, In Morbus Quod Valetudo, and other crap like that. If you browse long enough, you'll probably find something you like.

So, there's my application. I hope to be considered for at least a small role.

Okay, so I said yesterday that I'd make a bit of an update- and recap post and that's what I'm gonna be doing right now!

Currently, we have 6 people who have signed up through this thread, plus potentially Holy, who I still need to get back to. Listed by field of expertise, those peeps are:

Background Artist
None

Character Artist
Deniya (Character Design?)
EvilPear13
Hitotsunami

Music Producer
None (Potentially periodically Bwarch)

Programmer
None

Writer
Aposke,
Horikawa Otane,
TheVulpineHero

At this point, I'd like to say that I'm really happy to see that there's a lot of interest in the VN and I'm thankful for everyone who's willing to contribute! Now that we have the first few signups (we still need more peeps though, especially BG Artists and Musicians), I figured we should actually give them something to do!
I think the first big thing we need to tackle right now is character design and identity. As the poll on the dateable guys is still going, we pretty much have only 5 characters confirmed so far, 4 of which are girls, so we'll focus on those for the time being.
Basically, what I'd like to see from both the character artists and the writers are short impressions of the characters listed below. I've written up a short "bio" on 4 of them, and from the artists, I'd like to see a character sketch or two for at least one of them. That doesn't necessarily mean that this will be the person whose route you'll be drawing, as this is just a proof-of-concept thing and a first try at getting some character design going (for that reason, please don't spend a million of hours on your sketch, either – a design impression is enough).
As for the writers, I'd like to see a short standard VN-type situation written between the character you choose and the player. That could be going on a date, a humorous situation, an introduction – anything, really! Word count should be around 1000, maybe a few hundred less, maybe a few hundred more.

Now, for the character bios!
Horikawa Otane (26):
With a height of 1.70m, she’s the tallest of the girls. She sports long, auburn hair and stylish glasses. Mostly wears traditional japanese clothing and is the cure for all weeabooness in the world.
She’s the “bookworm type”. Horikawa loves reading, writing and learning about social, cultural and historical topics – especially when they’re related to Japan. She’s a master’s student at the university, but gives occasional lectures on Japanese history and culture at the same time. Will often “drop knowledge”, even in casual conversations, which can annoy some characters.

Leet (18):
1.60m big, blonde hair with a side-braid, wearing very casual clothes, mostly dark colored. Studies game design in her first semester and is just as surprised to find herself in the “Haus” as the player is (she arrives one day later).
She is the biggest and only fan of raocow’s and AOD’s self-produced comic called “Natural Space C.H.”. Big gamer and occasional artist. More interested in girls and harder to win over if one plays as a guy.

raocow (29):
Incredibly gigantic. Dark-colored hair, wears glasses and shaves shobbily.
He always seems distracted or disoriented and his mind often seems to be anywhere but at the present situation. Sometimes wears something that resembles a white lab coat for no discernable reason other than it makes him look like a stressed professor. Has a part-time job in Sherbrooke, where he works until the early morning, and is therefore often tired during the days – though that doesn’t stop him from playing videogames after the evening lectures.
He doesn’t exactly know why, but he’s incredibly popular in the “Haus”, to the point where people ask about coming to his room to play games with him.
His dark secret is that he has a cat in his room even though dorm policies include a ban on pets. Then again… they also include a ban on rooftop communities.

Rikun Frances (21):
1.60m big, long, wavy dark-blonde hair, wearing anything from normal clothes to cosplay. Sometimes wears glasses (especially when at home), sometimes doesn't.
She’s incredibly nerdy and yet really friendly and down-to-earth. Often, she will give the player dating- or relationship-related advice (while dropping a dirty joke every now and then). She’s in the 3rd semester of her pharmacy studies and lives right next to the MC.
Disclaimer: Please note that the character bio for Leet is not in its final state yet and some things might be subject to change in the future.

Other than that, I'd appreciate it if everyone who signed up could send me either their contact data on Skype or outline another way they'd prefer to communicate. If multiple people don't want to use Skype, we'll have to make an IRC channel or something.

That's all for now, I think! The deadline for the character design submissions will be Saturday, the 1st of February. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me or Grim through PM or Skype!
