A2XT2 Devkit Resources Thread

Post by Rixithechao »

Apologies for taking so long with this! >_<

So here's a thing folks can help out with that's a much more manageable undertaking than costumes: new NPCs, blocks, BGOs, effects, etc!

WHAT WE'RE DOING:
As you may or may not know, the A2XT2 devkit will use a private build of the upcoming SMBX2 Beta 4. Beta 4 features a ton of new stuff you can use in the editor just like the old items, and we want to have custom graphics and sound effects for as many of these things as we can! It isn't too urgent for Episode 2, and rest assured that this won't delay the release of the full devkit (which is looking to be within the next few months!), but going forward we want to distance the base assets from the copyrighted characters, settings, and resources of Nintendo and other big game companies as much as possible with a thorough aesthetic overhaul.

WHY WE'RE DOING IT:
We're taking this direction for a number of reasons, but first and foremost as a legal safeguard for both the ASMT series and the SMBX engine -- to our knowledge, the ASMBXT/A2XT resource pack is currently the most complete package of original assets there is for SMBX, so it's the prime candidate for the new official asset pack if Nintendo or another corporation issues a takedown for the engine. The future of copyright law and the way it will be handled and enforced online is especially unclear right now, so we want to have a backup plan if possible.

This isn't to say that people aren't allowed to make levels with copyrighted graphics or music anymore; we're just looking to update and replace the defaults. Once the devkit is out you'll be able to make whatever kind of level you want, provided it meets the quality standards the rest of the game's levels were held to.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
I've been working on an asset list detailing all of the SMBX2 basegame graphics and their A2XT equivalents. There's still a lot that needs to be filled in, but the NPCs are the biggest priority for now and that part of the document is ready. You can find it here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

(I'll change it from a link to an embed once this post is no longer viewable in the posting page's history, the embedded version seems to cause some issues when making new posts.)
If you're interested in contributing, check to see which items are available in the spreadsheets, then announce which ones you're claiming in this thread and grab the corresponding files from this package:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

Please follow the guidelines listed in the "TO-DO AND GUIDELINES" tab. Feel free to share progress here or in the main A2XT graphics thread, and if you have any questions about how a thing animates/which sound effects it uses, or if you want to help with the asset list, just ask or shoot me a PM.
Delightful Adventure Enhanced is out now!
