Should probably post this in the costume thread but I figure this'll get a better reach.

We've settled on 5 buyable sets of costumes for Episode 2:
  • Mario character clothes (Mario Demo, Luigi Iris, Princess Kood, Toadcow and Link Sheath)
  • Metal (Gold Demo, Silver Iris, Pink Gold Kood, ____ raocow, ___ Sheath)
  • 8-Bit
  • Relatives (using existing graphics like Nevada and Uncle Broadsword)
  • Other characters (Cat Planet Cat, maybe some folks from ATXS or Aricelle)
I'd like to see if we can include a sixth set as a bonus unlockable using the characters' "classic" sprites - WTH Demo/Iris, the other set of Kood sprites that folks were considering for ASMBXT (which I guess was the ones shown here?), raocow's old sprites and Sheath's pre-color-corrected sprites.

We have the last two, but unless anyone has the sprites for the first three saved on their harddrive they'll take some effort to rip/recreate. I was at least able to salvage this image through the wiki's media manager, and I remember someone was asking about it a while back:

As far as SAJ is concerned a sixth set probably isn't worth the trouble, so if it ends up being too much of a hassle we likely won't get around to implementing classic costumes until Episode 3, if at all.

I've already expressed my concerns with this idea to SAJ in the Skype group, but I'll re-iterate this here.

We've had a bunch of neat suggestions for costumes, and it seems both lazy and downright boring to reject those in favour of what is essentially a monochrome recolour. This is perhaps the most boring costume you could possibly imagine, and I for one would rather put something interesting in there.

On top of that, we have a lot of costumes that are just "classic style graphics!" - We have both 8-bit style and "dressed as SMBX characters". While those are both cool, as is rocky's suggestion of original WTH sprites, it feels kind of tired that this occupies almost 50% of available costumes.

I was asleep while all this discussion was going on, which is why I didn't make my concerns clear at the time, but I think costumes are one place we can forgo the idea of consistency. We don't need 5 costumes for every character, we should have a minimum of say 3 alt costumes, but beyond that, whatever fun ideas work can be produced for any character, even if it means Demo and Iris have 10 costumes and Kood has 4.

I would direct people to the Tales of _ games for examples of costumes done really, really well. Each character gets a bunch of alternatives unique to them, but they're often not at all consistent. Most characters will get an alt colour in the more recent games, but then a bunch of alt costumes which tend to be just "whatever seems like a good idea for that character", rather than trying to find something that works across all characters.

While I agree with keeping scope manageable, costumes are one place where you need to "go big or go home". If you only have a limited number of options, there's barely a point in having them there in the first place, especially if we're limited to things that can only work for every character. Of course, I don't mean to say we should come up with 100 costumes for each character, or even to implement every idea that's been presented, but discounting ideas because "we already have 5 costumes" or "we don't have an alternative for all the other characters" is downright idiotic, to put it bluntly.

Lastly, I went and finished off the bobble hat Demo. Use it or don't, but it's there. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/308 ... leDemo.zip

I remade the raocow block graphic, then I got bored and made it fancy, then I remade all the blocks in the same manner. Curious of people's opinions on these.

I may at some point, although for now I need to finish up a rather large costume I've been spriting for the last week or so.

Personally I think they're a little overdone, and look a little too busy as a result.

Fair enough. I was going for a more metallic look, but on such a small scale, there was bound to be some clutter.

They look great, but they should be animated (like the default ones). Even if the letters don't scroll, you could have them glow like SMB1 ? blocks.

I made a slightly toned down version of it. The block itself is more like the original, but the letter pops out a bit like the one I made.

Image

As for animating it, I already animated the raocow block (the original new one I did), but I won't bother animating these until I get a final design down/they might make into the game, since theres no point in animating it if it won't get used for anything.

Reaaally liking the "overdone" version. The S should be pink though. ;)

Pink-ened Sheath still coming, but in the new year.

I'll wait until I find out which version people want more (original, overdone, middleground) before I mess with any of them again (of course, if more people want the originals then I won't touch them at all I guess).

Finally finished this new costume for Iris. Theres a few things of note that I'm not sure if they will be an issue or not.

*A number of the sheets use extended walk cycles (Big, Fire, Raccoon, Ice)
* Despite Racoon using 4 unique frames for walking and what not, it's "ready to fly" run works like a normal 3 frame animation.

Just finished up the A the Safety Demo costume. Like the Bobble Demo, it will need some ini-file altering to get the offsets right, (the left-facing swimming and jump frames are offset a little to the side in the small Demo sheet, almost everything else is just vertical offsets), but the graphics are all there.

Nothing fancy tonight, just had to add a new animation for Tanooki raocow. Seems I didn't take holding while flying into consideration when I made his sheet. Whoops.

Finished a boss. Haven't set up the sheet yet because I guess we might be drawing it in with lua, so I guess the sheet will have to be set differently, so I'm waiting to do that.

No time tonight, but here's a quick pink patch job + a couple pixels on her face to show what I'm thinking about.

I'll probably go a bit less NEON on the pink in the actual sprite, but not by much. Probably other small changes here or there. I like a lot about the Sheath sheet, but her clothing is hard to read in some frames.

Still tweaking before I commit to the whole sheet, but here's where my mind's at right now.

Chunkier braid, messed up the hair just a bit, filled her in in spots, played with her clothing a bit. (Don't look too closely at her neck, which is still wacky.) It could almost be worth doing a new sheet instead of editing, but I think the old one is still a good base.

New costume for Demo. This one took some time, but I like how it came out. Tried to align this one, but I believe there are some issues.

Also, the Cape/Tanooki sheets have additional frames (and possibly others? I don't recall). Basically, their spin attack animations had to be made a bit differently, and because of this, the facing forward/away sprites were set as different things in general.

Honestly, I'm not sure what boss it is. I think it might be in world 7 though.

The World 7-1 Boss needed a robot NPC, but just something that walked left and right.
