Re: The Talkhaus presents... A Super Mario Bros. X Thing!
My two cents for A2MBXT or whatever it's called:
-Make sure every level is tested by at least 2 people, preferably 3, before the game is released. It really should've been done in the original, but considering people wanted to rush the game back in January, it could've been worse. I don't think the requirements should be as stringent as people have been saying here, they should be more of a guideline, and not definite rules. Any flaws the levels might have ought to be picked up in the testing period.
-Fully take aspect of the potential of the SMBX engine audiographically: fully replacing sounds and the HUD and whatnot would definitely help make ASMBXT into it's own thing. Having the title screen level entirely made in custom graphics would be fitting too.
-There need to be a few more pure platforming levels, I feel like there weren't enough in ASMBXT.
-Please, for the love of god, let the game be done "when it's done". I cannot stress this enough. Don't worry about raocow finishing his LP of another game or whatnot.

The problem with guidelines and other optional suggestions is that many people don't follow them. It seems that a large number of the complaints people have brought up about this game were brought up in testing too and then promptly ignored because it wasn't mandatory to fix the level beyond it having a start and an end.Kashkabald wrote:I don't think the requirements should be as stringent as people have been saying here, they should be more of a guideline, and not definite rules.

If the testers say 'no, this isn't good at all, x y z need fixing before it's acceptable' then it shouldn't be accepted. I just want to avoid cases where the rules are applied too stringently, which tends to be what I see in these types of projects.

There should be a baseline of things not to do, unless it can be justified. Things 5 raocoins only, beatable big or small, no lampshading engine bugs, etc. The rest should be be more for a testers ruberic that the testers can pick up on, such as:
- Do I understand what the level is asking of me?
- Am I at risk of dying because the next platform is offscreen?
- Can I break the level with a certain powerup?
- Can I get stuck at any point?
- Am I guessing what I am supposed to do next?
- Are there enough powerups?
- Is there rampant cutoff?
- Do I have to babysit items?
- Can I beat the level?
- Do I understand what the level is asking of me?

Re: The Talkhaus presents... A Super Mario Bros. X Thing!
Yeah these absolutely need to be part of the mentality. I understand how this time somebody got it into raocow's head that we were nearing completion for whatever reason, and he kind of started waiting on the game for the next LP, but next time it would be good to keep that from happening so we're not still working on it for months after the game is released.Kashkabald wrote:-Make sure every level is tested by at least 2 people, preferably 3, before the game is released. And yeah, I agree that it's kind of dumb to have a long list of things that will keep levels from being accepted, for a couple of reasons. For one, I believe anything can be used in a good way in the right circumstances, and aside from that, if a level's just flat-out unenjoyable testers should really pick up on that. It would be better to have testers' approval or disapproval, rather than a set list of rules, acting as a barrier against a level's inclusion.

I promise to be more involved for the sequelSAJewers wrote: - Have a dedicated testing team, probably consisting of pholtos, frozelar, aterraformer, and a few others to go through each level before it can be included.
Absolutely. I only just thought to look and was kind of shocked at the presences of a star instead of a leek for the counter. It'd be really nice if the death counter could be present thereKashkabald wrote: -the HUD

Re: The Talkhaus presents... A Super Mario Bros. X Thing!
I think having a set of dedicated testers is the way to go, to ensure every level gets consistently thorough testing and feedback from folks who know what to look for. Also some relatively simple public guidelines to ensure that people don't submit garbage levels, but not to an intimidating or restricting extent (the giant list of dont's earlier suggested).
exists on occasion

Jeesh, sorry about taking so long to respond! I've been super-busy lately.aterraformer wrote:The stage is really good but I would love to see cheez8 get past some of those impossible looking sections!
Though... "impossible looking sections"? I'm not sure which parts you mean... so, here's a video of me completing every room on the hardest difficulty. And, just for kicks, here's a video of me just doing the regular thing all in one go.
No love frog though. I'm not sure why I ever thought that one was reasonable.
Re: The Talkhaus presents... A Super Mario Bros. X Thing!
Can someone now fix these links?
Re: The Talkhaus presents... A Super Mario Bros. X Thing!
Uhm, hi! (:
I don't know if it's just me but the if I open the .exe thingy the talkhaus site won't load for some reason, which is kind of unfortunate because of the whole password-thing...?
Maybe it's just my internet or something but still - I want to see those secret videos haha
(Speaking of passwords, where's the one in the boss-rush level? I played it like a million times now but I can't seem to figure it out... Can someone help me?)

I seriously doubt that's gonna get fixed ever. I don't think anyone has a copy of that anymore.
