b-side quest

Post by raocow »

alright folks, it's this time again, y'all have 48 hours to convince me about what bside should be next. I'm open to anything, though I reserve the right to refuse anything.

http://www.acid-play.com/download/glace/

I was suggested this to me through PM, and I AM interested in going indie, though if you all have other, 'better' suggestions, I'm all for it.

Remember - I don't want to do anything commercial, and I don't want to do anything 'overly done'. Think indie, think fan-game, think romhack. Touhou I'm curious to explore again but there are tons of games out there and I don't know which ones are suitable.

Also: I'm aware I've had this kind of thread before, and I'm asking some of you guys to repeat yourself - yup! If anything, the more I hear about a game, the higher the chances that i choose it on my own at a latter date or something too, so remember that.

Have it it!

funny. I wanted to check out Glace as I'm better in judging games then coming up with suggestions on my own. But upon installing it, my virus scanner said it had a virus (or 2). It could be a mistake by the virus scanner and there is nothing wrong at all, but I'm not risking it.
So unless someone else says it is okay, I advise against it.

I recommended you the first two a while ago in a PM:

Happyland Adventures
http://www.freelunchdesign.com/games.php?id=2
It's quite an old game, I don't know if you'll be able to record it.

Pekka Kana 2
http://www.pistegamez.net/game_pk2.html
It's a game with a rooster.
The authors are working on a sequel which looks pretty awesome:
http://pistegamez.proboards.com/index.c ... thread=487

Lyle in Cube Sector
http://www.sitesled.com/members/bogo/index.html
But you'll probably want to take a break from metroid-like games for now :D

The Strange and Somewhat Sinister Tale of the House at Desert Bridge
http://www.jonas-kyratzes.net/?page_id=95
Although it's not very LP-able.

Jazz Jackrabbit for DOS
http://www.dosgamesarchive.com/download ... ackrabbit/
Have you played it?

By the way, I didn't really like Glace.

I have no powers of convincing you to not play the link in your post, but I can still recommend a game or two.

The following game was recommended to you originally in the "uh, suggestion for raocow to LP?" thread, and I downloaded it, and agree. Toad Strikes Back. If you were addressing the game, then you said
raocow wrote:i have to say that one screenshot is pretty impressive
It is a Mario fangame, wherein you play as Toad, who is trying to stop an evil force (aka Bowser)from doing... something evil, I guess. Honestly, I'm not that far in it, but I love it. Also, if you do play it, read the readme that comes with it.

If you want something else, I have no other real suggestions. Basically I'll watch whatever you decide to play. Also, if you even find time by yourself, play Cave Story. Not necessarily LP it (because it is action/exploration side-scroller, and, well, really exploration-ey and action-ey ), but just play it by yourself because it is a good game.

So yeah. Back to lurking now.
Woah.

Meh don't know, please just pass on Touhou though, I've honestly developed a severe hatred considering someone keeps daring me to play them while they watch >_>.

And maybe at a later date you could play the game I'm one of the programmers for, I'll give you more as we get closer to actually having a product that looks decent, right now we're still doing all the animation, and graphics, and sound.

Crystalex:
http://www.planetflux.com/Crystalex/Crystalex.zip

A SA goon made this years ago, it was never released publicly outside SA so there's no website/screenshots/reviews/hints anything like that so you'll have to take my word on it.

It's not a platformer, it's a puzzle game where you have to move a ball around the world and destroy blocks of various colors. You have complete control over your horizontal movements but you continuiously bounce up and down. It's very similar to the old mac game Diamonds if you're familiar with that. There's a bunch of powerups too, and the music is AMAZING. There's 96 (I think) levels in total over 4 difficulties ranging from simple to insane.

Also voting for a Jazz Jackrabbit LP :P

Super Mario: Buried Treasure.
It's a pretty challenging hack, which is probably what you're looking for raocow. I've barely played it, but I have to say, it's pretty darn amazing. I think you should give it a shot.
If you want more convincing, read Steven's review. (At the bottom of the hack page.)

I can't believe i'm suggesting this...

Eh, could you just do your first take on Super Mario Tabarnak? Only like the first level or so. You just seem to find that relatively hard (who am I kidding? It's hell), and there doesn't seem to be many videos of it on Youtube, so yeah.

That, or Azure Chaotic demo 2. That would be fun to watch, considering you are so used to the Mario controls, and the physics are changed considerably.
If you need a hand with Mario Romhacking in some way, feel free to PM me. I'll try and answer. <3

That games fine up until you get to the second key and the piano rooms, I couldn't figure them out and had to drop it at that point.

I know raocow's played Flash games before, so I'd like to suggest Super Mario 63. It's a Mario platformer made in Flash (nothing new there), but instead of just being like another hack, it's based off Super Mario Sunshine (I know RC's played that), where you collect Shine Sprites at the end of each level. The graphics and courses are more based off Super Mario 64, but there are even some Galaxy elements (like the awesome music). The difficulty curve is very good, starting easy and becoming harder. (Shine 64 would be hilarious for RC to get). There are a total of 64 shines to get, and you could probably do one or two per video. You can save after every one (actually, at any time), so video length wouldn't be an issue.

Now that the advertisement's over, I vote for this. I think you should play it yourself even if you don't put it on YouTube.

There are half-a-dozen really kickin' Japanese Megaman 2 ROMhacks out there, I just don't know if any of them are finished. There is also an enormous DOOM haciking community out there (Just imagine the level of surprise with raocow in games like that).
Pandemonium Fortress 2 is my personal best hack so far. Go on and play it.

How about Sonic Megamix, a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog many people compare to Demo World or Brutal Mario?

EDIT: Also recommending Jazz Jackrabbit. I had it years ago; need to play it again sometime.

I don't like Sonic games at all. Literally not 1 single Sonic game has even slightly interested me.

But it could be just me.

I think Sonic is hard to watch because it's so fast. When I was younger I played it a lot on Megadrive or however that thingie was called and sometimes even I didn't see where I was, because everything was too colourful, there were rings bouncing everywhere and I was kicked by some trampoline thingie to run through loops. So yeah.

I find Sonic games interesting to play, but less so to watch, although I cannot explain why.

What I'd like to see would be something Mega Man related. I don't know why here either, but somehow I think it would be pretty interesting. Of course, the main problem being that the series-es(?) basically all already have had the shit LPed out of them, aside from perhaps X6(but you probably would not want to play that one, even if the result would be undoubtably hilarious), so yeah I guess. There's got to be a wide range of obscure fan games as well, but sadly I don't actually know any of them I could in any way recommend...

Actually, have the Zero series been LPed yet? I don't know of any such vids, but they probably exist considering we're not exactly treading obscure grounds at the bottom of the ocean here.

Note that Pekka Kana is full-screen only, and changes resolution.
Also, configure your keys before playing because the default ones are all over the place!
If you choose it, do a test run or something :D

Have you ever been into FPS games? If so, how about Doom. It'd be pretty fun to see you play that.

Or you could go for the original Duke Nukem. The one that was a side scrolling type thing, not too far from Commander Keen. The controls are a little less stiff though.
