NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island is "difficult"
Re: NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island is "difficult"
I think we're taking things a little too literally here.
Re: NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island is "difficult"
Wow, that P-switch run went on, and on, and on, and on, and on... every time raocow beat some section, I was thinking "This STILL isn't over?" ... congrats on sticking all the way until the end!
I was reminded of P-Jon and Kaizo throughout most of this video. Even though that wasn't the commentary style at all.

That's not fair to say. If a game is frustrating and you have to keep playing it, you get angry. If you're angry, it brings down your day. Just like other things can bring down your day.kilon wrote: This is not any games fault though. It doesn't matter how unfair, hard and frustrating a game is. If you let your day get ruined by it, there is something horribly wrong with you. And yes, it's probably exaggerated and/or used in a jokingly manner.

"Have to"? Says who? Nobody is forcing raocow to play these levels and if he "lets a stupid video game ruin his day", then that's his own damn problem for playing past the first sign of the level not being enjoyable for him, not YF's.
A lot of these problems and conflicts can be (easily) circumvented by raocow himself taking precautions to limit these incidents.
Re: NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island is "difficult"
Sure, if you could bypass a level and not upload its video each time something in a given game is frustrating, it would make things simple. It wouldn't be a good representation of the game, though.

To be fair it 'ruined my saturday' not because I felt bad or anything, but just because it ate up a lot of week-end hours what with the mess editing the thing was, haha~

Hm... I guess you never wish to play this level again, but honestly, I've made it much easier and much more predictable; I can do it with 1 life in most cases; I actually have more problems solving Extra 1. As for the bonus stuff you were missing, now that your temper is a little better...
As for tomorrow, raocow, I advise you against making the continuation of this project be dependent on how much you like/dislike 4-2, since that level uses a lot of instakill, too, but is without the time-factor (except for one bonus-room). It's the 2nd or 3rd hardest World 4-level.
Re: NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island is "difficult"
Just making sure: raocow still records videos a day in advance, right? 2-E' was recorded Saturday, and 4-2 was recorded today?

I don't imagine 4-2 caused any undue heart attacks, although it could've taken a decently long time. The trickiest part concerns a purple guy section but considering the fiasco he encountered before the fix to 3-3, it's probably less troublesome than that. I don't remember anything in 4-2 being super tough if you move slowly, and the red switch gauntlet is right at the start instead of like, the tail end after you've already done everything else. Although I've gotta admit I'm curious to hear his blind reaction to seeing that shit so soon after doing 2-E. That specific bonus room is exactly the kind of red switch platforming I DON'T mind seeing. It's tricky but mercifully short and placed well. It's a neat bit of traditional Mario platforming since it relies more on your base jump control and not hovering.

I thought I'd share with you guys an interesting coincidence that popped up.

The thumbnails for today's Yoshi Island and the last video uploaded to the RaocowGV are pretty similar. It gave me a silly little laugh.

Re: NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island is "difficult"
I knew something was nagging at me that beared mentioning yesterday but I forgot it in the fervor over 2-E. I wanted to say it's around this point where it really pays to remember there aren't any useless side rooms in this hack. More obscure secrets are going to start reserving themselves for single side/bonus rooms (whatever you want to call them), so it's going to be healthy to make it a point that if you don't encounter an immediate solution or prize in one, you keep experimenting until you do, because there's guaranteed to be something in there somewhere.
I'm glad I could help past-you!

I watched the 2-E video right before I went to sleep and I ended up having a nightmare. Unraocow must have come to haunt my dream world.
Re: NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island is "difficult"
In uploading those videos, I still don't know how raocow managed to have the patience to do so many videos back then without breaking down outside of the one or two times it's happened, and that's with even having saves and rewinds all over the place. I think this was at least after he stopped doing four games at once, but that's still a lot of gameplay action. The lack of editing probably helped, I suppose.Terrinix wrote:The thumbnails for today's Yoshi Island and the last video uploaded to the RaocowGV are pretty similar. It gave me a silly little laugh.
Even now, it's close to those levels with how much content there is with both this and Distorted Travesty going on, and the actual gameplay is of a higher quality than the '07 and '08 days. I just couldn't do it on a daily basis.
Re: NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island is "difficult"
He did FOUR games back then? Yicheys.
You have better movement with 'Lord Puddington' when you are in the air. (Anyone know what his official name is? Even Mario Wiki doesn't know).
Did the graphics for the items change?

Afaik its name is Muddy Buddy.
Re: NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island is "difficult"
Yeay, I looked that up later on, but he is mentioned no where else in the wiki. Like, say, the two levels he appears in.

Good job, Yoshis Fan. You turned a bad level into an absolutely brilliant level. :)

Re: NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island is "difficult"
The only thing I would change would be that door behind the icicle near the beginning.

There is no door near the beginning... Or do you mean the door which comes shortly before the 1st !-Switch area? If so, what would you change? It's hinted more than just well. The Flower is actually harder to find.

Yes, confirmed, this is how the name was formed.
Re: NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island is "difficult"
World 4 of the original game didn't have much of a theme, like worlds 1 and 2. I did get a sense of 'dryness' though.

Nah, not really. There's a cesura after the castle; from 4-5 onwards, there's only one level in World 4 without water in it.

Re: NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island is "difficult"
I always considered World 4 in the original game to be a sort of a rocky mountainside (which seems to be reflected in the mountainy BGs, the high amounts of cliffs and tunnels and a general sense of increasing elevation in the levels, and the more red and brown-hued palettes). Then in World 5 you continue up the mountains onto the really high peaks, and ultimately the clouds. As for Worlds 1 and 2, they most certainly have themes as well, the first being more of a flowery meadow, and the second a forest.
Speaking of the original game, though, Sluggy the Unshaven is one boss I always seem to forget about in Yoshi's Island. Possibly because the enemy he's intended to be a gigantic version of appears exclusively in his own level, seemingly for the sole purpose of justifying his own existence. This would seem to suggest he was something of an afterthought for the game designers, as well. So much that so they couldn't even be bothered to come up with a better title for him than one citing his lack of personal grooming. All qualities which suggest you're going up against a real first-rate opponent.
