S. Mario: The S stands for "Shine"

Post by peteyboo »

It seems that I'm the only one up at this time, so... Here you go!

Download link, just in case you missed it:

I'm looking forward to the third level. If a video of it ever exists, it means raocow didn't give up after the second, which is good.

I'm kinda still on the fence about this one. Let's just see how it goes.

Just as long there are no timing gimmicks like the one special world level in Vip4, we should be good.

I think the reason you didn't have as much trouble as I did, petey, is that you're still on the razor's edge of Hyper 6, while the last thing I played was the original game. Although the ascetic run DID make it more complex, coins are immobile things I had to work around, and otherwise it was a lot of waiting - my reflexed weren't nearly as tested, so I kind of have to work that back up.

I'm curious to know if i'm going to adapt pretty fast!

I agree with that, although wouldn't it be more of a "c-side"?

This hack seems better than most generic Japanese fodder in that it's actually self-aware. Also, I find the creator's usage of those Venus plants really interesting, especially the sped up ones.

Hope he can keep the difficulty at a fun level (read: fair) and not an eventual moronic level.

There's some very clever level design there. You've got more than enough safe spots to get through, but they're not always obvious thanks to the mix of plant types.

Out of curiosity, are L and R disabled in this hack?

man, if you're relying on L and R in the first world this is going to be harder for you than I thought.

While in general the hacker does seem to be great at designing hard stages, there are a couple spots that I do feel cross the line, but they're normally single obstacles that need just a little bit more give. Just a tiny little bit and they'd be perfectly fine.
Namely the Note block jump in Garden of Eden.

...And the entire last level is kind of crazy.
But for the most part, the game is genuinely interesting, which I find to be the most important quality a hack can have. He seemed to run out of steam after World 2 though, so those last few levels feel kind of uninspired. I'm a little worried since it gets a lot harder after today's video, but this should be a fun Let's Play regardless since raocow seems to be in a hard hack sort of mindset (I blame peteyboo's Hyper VI run for being inspiring).

Here's the translation raocow is using if anyone wants to play along.

Oh! I just realized I forgot to translate the kanji on Yoshi's mailbox. It says "deceased."

I think I'm going to try to play along with raocow for this LP.
I never actually play the games during the LP normally, but I think it will be interesting seeing how I compare skill-wise here.

Like I got through that first level my first time in 3 lives or something, but the second level took me something like... 64, and I kinda doubt it took raocow that long, so...
I don't know. It should be interesting.

I liked this so much I played it twice, back-to-back. It's very well-designed in that obstacles that seem impossible and ridiculous at first are actually quite feasible. And since Hyper 6 keeps getting mentioned, it's worth saying that Haimari, 'the Satan of Super Mario World hacks' easily trumps Final, the sadist.

I like the work they did on the first level music. Recreation of the New SMB basic level using the basic SMW instruments? I'm impressed.

Jimmy made the song back in ~2010, actually.

Not necessarily; Nitroid! isn't uploaded regularly, so I think Hyper VI would be the b-side and Nitroid! would be the c-side.

Although I've never seen a three-sided disc before...
What about voxatron? And don't accuse me of being petty. If I was being petty, I would have included Warning Forever.

..Okay, I'm being a bit petty.

And when it comes to the actual LP, I don't have much to say. I was confused when the fire balls were going fast because the way I read the comments in the request grab-bag implied that the piranha plants merely fired at a faster rate.

I have nothing of merit to say currently.

Don't forget the flash game that I already forgot the name of that raocow was doing.

I feel like raocow has strength in reactional commentary and this hack looks to be all about that so I am looking forward to how this goes.

How did raocow get 99 lives again? Didn't he end with 75 yesterday? I don't remember any saving...

The game gives you 99 lives at the start of each run. Since it also saves after every level, rao doesn't need savestates between parts.

Hmm, I didn't see a "You want to save and continue?" option after today's level.

Anyway, like I said, I didn't really think that raocow would have wasted like... 60+ lives on the level like I did. What ended up happening to me was a thing that I'm sure everyone's experienced before, which is when you start off a level doing really good, screw up a few times, get impatient, and get worse as you go until you're so used to the level that you're basically outputting the same button inputs each time you retry until the level is done.

I think another key factor is... Patience. If you compare raocow's successful run to the one in my video, raocow's successful run shows a lot more patience, while mine is just running through the level as quick as possible -- probably not the best strategy.

I'm gonna guess the answer to that is a rather emphatic "No."
