Cal's LP thing (NP: Rayman Origins, PTCG 2, SMWCP)

Post by gamercal »

Old thread for legacy purposes

Alright, so I'm going to keep this here thread updated with my LP videos for just now, assuming I remember. I'm uploading Worms Reloaded matches every once in a while at the moment, along with Minecraft stuff, but I won't be putting those up here since it would be a waste of time to be honest.

Current LP's (if you didn't read the thread title): Rayman Origins
Pokémon Trading Card Game 2: The Invasion of Team Great Rocket!
An Super Mario World Central Production

Previous LP's in this thread:

Super Mario Star Road

Info:
It's a romhack of SM64. Completely redone. And it's awesome. I played into the first 5 or so levels, not really doing too much beyond finding out where the first two switch palaces are so I could make proper progression. I only got 14 stars in my original take, so this will be largely blind past the first 5 parts. Fun times!
Videos:
Part 1: What, An SM64 Hack?
Part 2: Vase = Sky
Part 3: Geno stole a pond and made it a course
Part 4: Chucking the harbour away
Part 5: Who was Boo again?
Part 6: Gotta love redo's...
Part 7: Wherein panic somehow doesn't lead to death. Much.
Part 8: Pretty much how I expect the rest of this LP to go.
Part 9: Who needs to go in Course order? Or through the intended methods of getting a star for the matter?
Part 10: Cameras don't work inside trees
Part 11: But where were all the lives?
Part 12: The fat lady sang...
Part 13: He ain't quick when he glitches out...Part 14: Some things are just always going to stay the same...
Part 15: Switch Palaces are complete!
Part 16: Cloud rail platforms... though where it is going is beyond me...
Part 17: Toys Unite With Cake!
Part 18: Suddenly Lava
Part 19: Backtracking
Part 20: Even after all this time the early levels can still be a threat...
Part 21: Mr. Owl returns!
Part 22: Almost drowning! D:
Part 23: I see rails of death... and annoyance...
Part 24: A Toad went into space.
Part 25: Bombs make factories in space you know.
Part 26: Star Roads are tricky roads to walk.
Part 27: Victory! Even if it's only partial!
Part 28: Chillin' in the sea
Part 29: Koopa's not so glitched now!
Part 30: Wow that tree was huge...
Part 31: Music is our biggest challenge
Part 32: Blasted penguins...
Part 33: Lots of hunting for stuff here in the Toy Gala- err course
Part 34: Cloud Riding... it's a thing.
Part 35: Lava Came and Went
Part 36: Looks like space was more annoying than desert this time...
Part 37: The final frontier is here!
Part 38: How the what now?
Part Final (!): Why I don't do post-commentary

Sonic Generations

Info:
Yes, another Sonic LP on my channel. The third one to be exact - Sonic 4 and Sonic Colours being the other two. The origins of my channel saw me doing Sonic Unleashed (Wii) speedruns, and I am a big fan of the hedgehog in general, so it makes sense for me to LP this game. With the power of Steam and my new gaming desktop I have the ability to record this in flawless 720p settings with Fraps, which I think is pretty good considering I'm not even trying to push my system right now!

General setup of the videos: One zone (both acts) per video for the main game, one video for the required missions to get the Boss Keys, then one video for the Boss and Rival Battle for the era. I'll be having Red Star Ring videos after the main game, probably being one per zone (one per era is a bit ambitious I think). Depending on response from the audience I will consider doing the other 81 missions I'll have left after that, though it's unlikely right now.
Videos:

Now featuring Touhou 11!
Subterranean Animism has been a LONG time coming, for various technical and personal reasons. Eight months in fact. But it's done now, and I can finally get this one off my back! (Not that anyone ever asked for it, but still).

Two stages per video, with one for intro and one for Extra. So they'll be going up in the next few days.

Part 0: Intro stuffs
Part 1: What? It's Lunatic? Since when do you LP Lunatic?
Part 2: Look Into my Heart...
Part 3: Now witness Hell's True Power!
Part 4: Miko vs Psycho

Rayman Origins

Super zany game going back to Rayman's 2D beginnings. It is 100% blind outside of the first level (done to test if the game was working). I'm not too familiar with the Rayman universe but this looked and played far too good in the demo not to get. Done from my PC instead of my Wii so it is in HD!

Part 1: Let craziness commence!
Part 2: That bug sure knows how to Gradius!
Part 3: Chest Chasing to learn mechanics of the game
Part 4: WIND! ARCH-ENEMY OF THE WORLD! Only it isn't so bad in this game
Part 5: Where Fraps decides to forget that microphones exist
Part 6: Cold Suicide
Part 7: Somehow transitioning into lava city. Still in World 3 mind you.
Part 8: My fears from the demo come back!
Part 9: Power to trek through dark waters!
Part 10: TNT Underwater? Well this isn't Minecraft I guess...
Part 11: Is it just me or was that not that hard for World 4?
Part 12: Wherein the mountain kinda broke.
Part 13: Speaking of mountains, this one didn't last very long.
Part 14: Red Eyes are very frightening!
Part 15: Are we really going back to old level motifs? And difficulty it seems...
Part 16: I ran out of gimmicky titles, so genericness it is!
Part 17: The remake of World 2 starts out pretty neat!
Part 18: The return of the wind levels... I like this place!

Pokémon Trading Card Game 2: The Invasion of Team Great Rocket!

Overly long title is long! I decided to do this because Rayman is currently in a bit of a... lame spot imho and I can't record much whilst my main screen is kaput. I was always going to do this game, but I just decided that now would be as good a time as any since I recently got a full english translation.

Basic idea: After becoming the Grand Champion Team GR shows up and steals all the cards on the island. Along with many of the inhabitants. Start out fresh (they stole your cards too) and go kick their ass!

Part 1: Predictable start for luck-based games
Part 2: How did Gene of all people be the ONLY one to fend off GR?
Part 3: Seems like the Rock Gym was weak after all... how did Gene win again?
Part 4: That misplay... possibly my worst fail of all time
Part 5: Who would've thought that the rival could be so good?
Part 6: That one really long part to beat up GR3.

An Super Mario World Central Production

I know not why I am doing this. I really don't. This is ~3/4 blind - I watched raocow's LP at the time but haven't touched the thing since, never actually playing it through myself. I played the first world before recording just to get back into the swing of things (I don't play hacks often), but everything after 2-1 is as good as blind. Going to attempt to stay tool-less, but I do not have the extreme threshold of you elites out there so if I feel myself becoming too annoyed/I feel cheated by something I feel is unreasonable then I will use tools.

Part 1: I have no idea why I am doing this but I am
Part 2: Wherein the LP Curse has already started!
Part 3: And so the semi-blindness begins...

It was at 95% processing! It said it had just one minute left!

Oh well, it happens. I just wanted to do this whilst I remembered, since if I didn't I would definitely forget to do so later on.

This time with more immediate availability!

Unfortunately take two since the recording blacked out the first time for no apparent reason other than me changing emulator settings to try and remove the interlacing and disappearing issues. Didn't seem to work at all. Oh well.

On the plus side I now have access to all on my controllers, including my super-awesome one with 2 analogue sticks and a dpad ^_^. So I basically have very accurate analogue movement with a c-stick too, good times.

Gotta love it when everything dies on you in one go...

Something about being similar to Tall Tall Mountain, without being Tall.

At least I learned something about compatibility of Blueberry Flashback Express with VSync buffers... wonder if there's a way to turn off Touhou's reliance on them.

Panic does not always cause instant death! Even when it should!

Probably gonna upload some of the other LP I can today, if I can get it recorded. I've been doing this one exclusively because it's fun, but I shouldn't neglect the one I was doing before this!

Sometimes it has to be done man! Although I ended up screwing up the editing a bit and putting my mic audio 5 seconds or so before the game audio, but welp it happens sometimes when standard protocol fails...

Anyhow, somehow made it into Stage 6 when all I was doing was messing around. Good times. Seems like a standard underwater world, but with a couple of neat twists and rather... peculiar occurrences. Like that lava tile right under the ground pound, what up with that?

Do you think it would be possible that some stars remove the cannon from existing, like some stars dynamicaly add/remove stuff?

Well, the cannon was there the first time he tried to get into it with the metal cap; it just didn't activate properly. My guess is that the code that makes Metal Mario sink into water somehow took priority over Mario getting affected by the cannon, and since it was never properly fired it wouldn't activate again.

Of course, this is all guesswork; I don't actually have any experience with hacking SM64. But in any case, I severely doubt it will affect anything in the future; the game permanently saving cannon status just wouldn't make any sense at all.

I guess we will discover this when I record more!

This is the beauty of going into something like this completely blind - you have NO idea what's going to happen whatsoever. What glitches come up, what things you will discover, it's really all so fresh and exciting. Very few people will actually know a huge amount about SM64 hacking too, so there's an element of "how did he even do that!?" in there too. Add to that how much you can learn about the engine whilst doing this, and it's shaping up to be one heck of a ride!

I hope I'm not "letting the side down" commentary-wise though. Like the last thing I'd want to do would be to not give a game like this any form of justice! I must admit though it's pretty strange doing a game like this completely blind in commentary terms though - it's different from Galaxy 2 in the sense that Galaxy 2 was (mostly) filled with very specific star paths that you couldn't devoid from whatsoever, whereas this is one big level with 6 different stars to get and no real clues as to where to get them. And I love to go EVERYWHERE in these sorts of games too, so I'll often stray away from the actual point whilst I explore this random section that probably leads to star 5 instead of one etc.

I'm still having loads of fun with it mind, and I believe that shows. Just... yeah.

Oh, I'm digging this run quite a lot. It was a wonderful way to 'discover' you, which led me to watch about half of your galaxy 2 run (I'll be watching the other half next month when my bandwith resets, gotta think about these things).

So at least as of yet, you are not 'letting things down', though do expect to maybe have more judicious editing to do down the line when you mess up at things. Like, the biggest difference between SMW and M64 is that more often than not, when you mess up it looks like you don't really die, but you do have to start some bits over, and down the road this can become meaningful.

Again, it's not a problem -now- but it's something to watch out for I guess ?!

You sir are a brave man, going through all of THAT LP several months after it finished lol. Hoowee, the length of that... I really must have been out of my mind when I decided to do that with literally zero playing experience beforehand!

I guess it shows the general sort of editing style that I like to employ for these types of games though.

In any case, I have to thank you for your attention towards this LP too. One inherent thing with being who you are, is that a ton of people have come to watch this series, and many of them subbed as well. Just with that, there has been a ton of additional activity with my stuff, which is fantastic for helping me improve further. I'm so glad that I put this thread up, it has made such a difference...

The whole "expect more editing" thing is already coming to light a little bit in terms of what I recorded just now, along with the coral one. I'm fully expecting there to be times where you can slip off and have to redo a section. It's hard NOT to have that kind of section in these games. When that happens, should I fail it I will just cut to either the next significant mistake/discovery, or the "winning run". On very rare occasions I will speed things up, but it means taking the video over to my old laptop running Vista so as to get a working speed-up code in Windows Movie Maker.

One odd thing I've noticed though with my one compared to like every other speed-up ever on YT is that my sped-up sections never change in pitch, they just get faster. This was probably noticeable on today's part (which was actually only edited on Vista because Live Movie Maker decided not to recognise the avi, calling it corrupt), though since I didn't talk through that part it was maybe not so obvious.

Anyhow, editing the next part just now, to go up probably later on tonight. Let's just say I break the level order now... and not in a good way either. This one ought to get some interesting reactions!

Well this was a shock to the system!

Suddenly found myself staring into Course 10! So much for sequential order!

Excellent course though, fantastic design overall. Not looking forward to those red coins mind you!

Also, Yoshi Coins, they exist. Dunno if they give anything special, I'd assume they are another thing to collect for a star.

Koopa's so quick now he tried to run up a wall... and failed epically.

I've had one or two people saying I just need to restart the ROM to fix this, but who knows. It won't be done until I go back to this world for recollections later, so yeah.

Looks like the last switch has been collected!

Funny how the red switch is now at the end-game area, when it was first in the normal game.

Just where was I meant to go on that platform ride?

Also totally putting this out there too early, but some question about whether or not another ASMT LP would be watched by anyone here. I have a twist in mind for it that would make it interesting, just obviously if nobody would care for the game again I wouldn't bother. Nobody else has done it the way I intend to though...

raocow was right in the YT comments: the platform glitched out. It's supposed to spawn somewhere else and do a different path. I've never actually seen it glitch out like that before, probably because I usually played from power on instead of loading state.

As for the ASMT run, you should wait for ASMT v2.0 before you do it: Long-time fans of ASMT would be interested to watch your run even if only to see the changes that have been made. Not sure when the v2 is actually coming out, though, but I think it'll be worth the wait.
