New SMWC contest thingy: the 9th Door: the series.
Re: New SMWC contest thingy: the 9th Door: the series.
Meh, I have a personal beef with these choconilla levels like what we saw today. As raocow said, it is visually confusing, and on top of that, there were vanilla tiles taken and made to do things differently (in this case, the Bowser statues: they don't fire at you and you can't stand on them). I'd give the guy marks for effort, but as was said, he missed the point entirely. Looks more like a standard entry for one of the old vanilla contests than anything, boss notwithstanding.
Also, whenever HDMA covers the status bar, I think it looks very fugly.

I don't want to sound insulting, but I've always felt that those multi-colored/layered landscapes and whatnot were poor excuses for covering up poor level design. It's why I've never really liked the whole Hacks 101 idea (especially because Tails_155 himself admit that he sucks at designing levels).Mineyl wrote:Meh, I have a personal beef with these choconilla levels like what we saw today. I mean, yeah, I get the idea that people want to fill up the empty space in their levels with decorations, but there is such a thing as overdoing it.

Or maybe something like 1-2 game overs first. Still up to raocow to choose when/if to use tools though.Melancholia wrote:Better, I think, to have a better trigger for them then "I hate everything right now." Perhaps a time-limit-per-level before using tools? Subject himself to pain for ten minutes before just finishing it?
Re: New SMWC contest thingy: the 9th Door: the series.
While I do find myself defending SMWC from the group of Raofans that are too lazy and ignorant to find things out for themselves, I am not a representative of anyone from SMWC except for myself.Servant wrote:MrDeePay: Since you have set yourself up as the unofficial Public Relations Representative of SMWC...
Most entrants enter these contests for the hell of it (read: fun) while others do it in the spirit of competition. Of course, I feel blatantly bad entries, especially those made to fellate any specific people or to get them to comment on their trash (see also: Rao's Vanilla 10 LP) should be outright disqualified.was any level in this contest intended to be played at all? Or was this contest just an attempt by SMWCentral to refine the skills of all romhackers involved so that they could then produce better romhacks in the future (similar to writing excerises that are intended to help people write better)?

Not to say that a level with good level design wouldn't benefit from added decoration, or no?S.N.N. wrote:I don't want to sound insulting, but I've always felt that those multi-colored/layered landscapes and whatnot were poor excuses for covering up poor level design. ^ It's more like "put the level first, then decorations after", and not the other way around.

Is it bad that the first thing I thought of while reading that was SNN's 2011 Vanilla entry? (although, again, if you know the 'joke', it's fun enough).MrDeePay wrote:Of course, I feel blatantly bad entries, especially those made to fellate any specific people or to get them to comment on their trash (see also: Rao's Vanilla 10 LP) should be outright disqualified.

Come on, the best term for these type of levels is "Neapolitan".Mineyl wrote:choconilla

Where does pistachio fit in among those? That's a great flavor of ice cream, I highly recommend it.

After watching the angrier videos, I feel like anyone who made a level like room for this hack should watch this LP, but only if they are able to...You know...Accept it.

I guess 1-ups had a little writer's block. Or should that be "designer's block"?
Re: New SMWC contest thingy: the 9th Door: the series.
I'd have given the ponylevel a score of zero just on sheer principle.

For the last two levels he played, it was as if raocow was talking from Mario's point-of-view. I seriously wanted to see Mario's mouth enlarge every time he screamed.

One of tomorrow's level is AMAZING to me on a technology level.
And I think it's fully vanilla, too.

Five actual decent rooms in a row. WTF? I was worried about the fishing fish guy one, but it was actually short as a room should be and didn't ask the player to do too many rediculous stunts. The SteamPunk Ghost House was also awesome to behold. Really crreative with the vanilla there.

Hey it's MrDeePay responding to something negative that was said about a SMWC contest level. What a surprise!
Seriously, dude, chill out. It's obviously a joke (that I 100% agree with)

1.) I don't particularly care about CrispyYoshi's entry (or MLP in general), though I found raocow's reaction to the giant Pinkie Pie to be hilarious.
2.) Knowing Ometeotl on a certain other forum (read: not SMWC), something just tells me he's serious with that Ponies response.
My post wasn't as "SMWCy" as you think it may have been!
Re: New SMWC contest thingy: the 9th Door: the series.
This series is quite good for surprises, that is for sure... It is like every new video provides a new surprise, with today's having a couple... both of which were not "How could it possibly get WORSE?!" as had been the trend for awhile... Good to have a positive video in the series finally. XD
Wonder how far in until we get to one that both got the concept more or less fully and is half-way decently constructed...
