Something: It's a Mario (some) thing

Post by Test Pilot Monkey »

I'm happy to see a new Mario hack up today, and I enjoyed the "What is food?" song.

Here is the link to the hack

Jeez, raocow ran, like, a million red lights in that first level. Nevertheless, this looks like a solid enough beginning. Starting things off with starry night skies and mellow music? I approve.

And I think raocow's just singing about food to make fun of the skeletons, who lack digestive systems and thus can never experience such a thing for themselves. I also approve.

OOhhh, a mystery! This is exciting. Who stole the story? and to what end? I'm going to draw up a list of suspects and possible motives. Simply can't think when a mario hack's plot has been so involving.

Yeah, instead of the tired old "the Princess has been kidnapped" it's the fresh "the plot has been kidnapped"!

Yeah, it's totally not a hilarious reason for there to not actually be any plot whatsoever!

Yeah, the scenario is so original and interesting. I don't know how I managed to imagine such a awesome plot. I am a genius.
Yonowaaru: But there is a real plot. But it was stole.
You will "save" the plot at the end of the game, after defeating the guy who stole the plot.
And this first episode was great, especially the food song. I can't wait to see the rest of the LP.

Something like, "Alas, poor Yoshi! I knew him, Mario; a fellow of infinite hunger..."

Now this is more like it. I played ahead to World 2 and the game seems to stay awesome unlike another Mario game that needs not be mentioned.

This should be a great LP.

Isn't him trying to find who stole the plot a plot in and of itself?

Yeah, it's a cut above most hacks. Almost like The Maltese Falcon, in fact. Mario is Sam Spade, and Luigi's his partner who's not in it because he died (just like Miles Archer), and the Princess can be the scheming bitch Brigid O'Shaughnessy, who wants Mario to find the 'story' but it's really something else. And Bowser will turn up as Fat Man Kasper Gutman.

Am I the only one who is amazed raocow notices things like the score/death counter almost immediately? (I played the whole hack and never noticed that.)

After two months, I've really started to miss SMW. It's nice to see it back.

Ah, raocow, you start a level called SKULLS CAVE, immediately notice that it's got a Mega Man song, identify the game correctly...and attribute it to Dive Man.
This must be the part of your brain that also handles boss fights :p.

On the other hand, I assume you mixed up the songs because they're the two best themes in MM4, so that's cool.

By the way, for my next LP, I'll start with Skull Man's stage, so I played it about 10 times over the last few days. When the level started up, and the music played, I thought I was tripping balls. NOT AGAIN DAMN IT

Yes. I was more focused on the levels that on the plot and the texts. I wrote all the texts in this game by myself and I haven't used any dictionary. And nobody except me beta-tested this hack. So it is possible that there are some horrible grammar and spelling mistakes. Sorry about that.

Also, I don't know if raocow saw my comment on youtube, but if not I will repeat myself : This hack have some slowdown in some places with ZSNES1.51 and I don't know why. But with older version (like ZSNES1.42), the slowdown are gone. So raocow, if you are using 1.51, I suggest you to use 1.42 instead (and don't forget to put the .srm in the zsnes1.42 folder).

It's "Mega Man 2 - Password theme" (also used in Mega Man 9).
If you want the custom music, it is at smwcentral, in the *Mega Man 2 Soundtrack.

Everyone who are playing (or finnished) this hack might have the same opinion as mine: yogui put a LOT of effort in the level design, and when a I say "level design" I mean the perfect combination of length, music, graphics, etc. I'm LPing it too (btw, I'm uploading the video right now), and I'm very excited to see the next levels.

Eh it would've been more of a problem if this was an RPG but in a Mario hack level design is king. Liking what I'm seeing so far enough I might want to play it myself.

Even though I'm not super crazy for yet another installment of a Super Mario World ROM hack, I am finding this (some)thing quite enjoyable so far.
