Best boss so far, in my opinion. Took real strategy, but not too long.
Level looked a lot more fun and fair than the original, which is kinda odd but says a lot about Toxic Tower, I guess.

A VIP-off you say?
Naw so far this game is pretty fun I think. It does some things that seem like they'd be a bit of a pain (waiting around for boss patterns mostly), but so far I'm enjoying watching it. It's going to be a shame when it hits up to the hard and lunatic modes though just because I kinda wanna see like...it's definitely weird but it would amuse me to go from stage 1 to 5 easy then down from 5 to 1 on hard and then 1 to 5 back up to lunatic. Really though it would probably just be obnoxious.
Also since it's Rare, wouldn't that be respecting Britain and not America? :o

We'll just generalize and say "not Asia" then.
Today's level .. not liking the slime part, but the boss was alright. Aside from the pause/knife attack, it screamed of an overly generic pattern (and Goombas? Really? Might as well just have been throw blocks).

You know thinking about it, instead of goombas, why not use the Super Marisa world fuzzy dudes?

Because this hack is Brutal Mario Lite with some Touhou sprinkled in for flavor. In other words, because it would make too much sense.

So when are we going to get some actual levels designed by the Author?

The answer to that is 'half of tomorrow'

I'll admit, I'm a little disappointed we didn't get to hear Sakuya's fantastic Super Marisa World voice again. Shame she got her body back. Apparently without it, she can only speak in a heady falsetto. I guess that makes sense since she wouldn't have a diaphragm.

I really liked that tower level. The way the tower sank into the lava but it went partway before it disappeared, giving it that "3D" look. Most 3D in a game like SMW ends up being pretty awful, so it was cool to see an effect like that which worked well.
This hack is frankly all over the place, but a fun enough romp with enough Japanese zanyness to keep me watching.

The problem is that it makes everything Mario look flat.

No...it definitely appears to be a slightly edited version thereof--just the chimney ruins slightly reduced, and moved around a bit along with the mailbox sign. The holes in the roof are completely unchanged.
I find this uniquely hilarious.
Then again, it is the Nostalgia Fortress...

I think in his translation, the english message was translated back to japanese (and transliterated) and he paused to figure out why, and that was him getting the joke. The thing at the end was him reading the transliteration.

I loved the fire-swaps of the ghost tileset. I felt that was pretty clever. These levels were definitely the best so far IMO

The infinite lives are boggling me. I'm all for getting rid of lives in a modern hard SMW hack but why even have them if you're going to give an infinite lives powerup 3 worlds in?
At least the level design is getting better, I guess.

And all the E-Tanks before...
Still, really neat fire level. Though his love of auto-scrolling is getting out of hand, imho. And the wavering yellow over bright red made me zone out during the part with the low ceiling...other than that, well designed for sure.

Apparently, it's in the graphics section on SMW Central, I came across it one day looking through the list.
Link.

"Recycled" levels with tacked on gimmicks, gimmick levels akin to someone trying to cram every single idea they have into a hack, bad palettes, and so-so music/GFX quality?
Did I forget to mention that this is basically Touhou in name only?
