Also, I couldn't tell if you recognized that Cerberus (who is in hell), says an old, now public domain translation of what the Gates of Hell say in Inferno (an excellent read, though I think far too many stop there). Most translations are better, but it still beats Longfellow.

Edit: I realize in retrospect, this isn't all that fair, anyway. While the point of baptism being something that video games would be expected to not show remains, there's bits and pieces here, but like Shinto, it's mostly cultural, rather than religious. Unlike Shinto, it's more dangerous to represent in new scenarios because things which are big in games, like sex appeal and many even minor alterations to scriptural stories can easily make representing it and its rites sacrilegious, so it's mostly in historical things, like medieval strategy games, and usually much more vaguely. Trying to encourage belief can also be considered sacrilegious in the wrong contexts. It helps that Abrahamic religions are strictly nonsyncretist, while Shinto just about welcomes it and Buddhism is compatible with it. But yeah, baptism isn't going to appear in many games except in a theological game... which will probably sell only a handful of copies.

Not sure why you're surprised about the baptism thing being rare. How many game developers are openly and actively Christian? A third of the U.S. goes to church weekly, but how many gaming websites do you know where you have any reason to believe even a tenth do? Sure, a lot don't mention it, but gaming as a whole tend to be much more Iconoclasts (anti-Christian) or Dante's Inferno (this is of course in reference to the game and not what it twists and mangles in all sorts of decidedly Unchristian ways) than even Sonic R (which has an ichthys randomly in one small part), let alone genuinely Christian. Can you name any that aren't edutainment? And is it actually any good? Could you not rattle off dozens of games which are anti-Christian? Many famous games display religion as an evil or fake thing. Some directly target Christianity. You get a few games like Okami which are pro-Shinto (regardless of how accurate to Shinto they are). But can you give an example of Christianity's answer to Okami? It shouldn't be surprising then.

And of course, the "ana-" in "Anabaptism" is not the alpha privative, so I'm assuming either the joke is that it looks like it is, or that you didn't bring up the subject of baptism first, which isn't really what Anabaptists forbid. They forbid imposed baptism (which wasn't the case here, unless there was no way to get out upon talking, though one might argue that even there, it's questionable), including infant baptism. Incidentally, a lot of denominations don't use immersion, but some Anabaptist churches do.

Ah yes, the very Christian tale of a reskin of what was originally going to be too overly Satanic to be considered put on the market, and done by shooting fruit at animals.

To be fair, it's probably more Christian than Dante's Inferno, but it probably fits what I was talking about less, not more. Certainly not a game in which you could picture someone being baptized, even before considering that it takes place before Christianity was a thing. Not that I mean to say, "Oh no, there's a dearth of Christian games!" Just that yeah, there's not really any game in which you would expect to be baptized.

i will say jrpgs aren't entirely anti-religion. they're just anti-religion being used for power and authority. like deathevan and myria from bof and sephiroth and kefka are really just demiurges, false gods. myria in bof is literally lying about her being a goddess, and sephiroth, kefka, the ten wise men from star ocean 2, and luther from star ocean 3 are the result of megalomania making people think they're above humanity (luther is mostly the result of not wanting artificial life to even exist bc again megalomania making him think genociding planets is Totally Cool and Fine)

a lot of jrpgs are very much pro-religion being used for hope or even just forging their own path without relying too much on godhood, you can see this in lunar for one, where the actual goddess, althena literally finds that her children have become hella reliant on her, so she decides to reincarnate as a human child and the main part of the game is about saving her reincarnated self from a former hero who just cannot believe humanity (and beastfolk etc) can survive without authority and thus aims to take her place while she powers him up to godhood

lunar 2 is the same, but instead of althena it's an organized religion trying to enforce the rule of a fake althena for the sake of their own benefit, even

reviving ghaleon from the afterlife, who later defects, regretting everything he's done

. there's also the main plot involving zophar who is generally a jackass and serves to ruin shit up for everyone. a big part of the plot is basically about the beauty of humanity (ironic, when you take into account the edgy localization), and seeing lucia, who's spent her whole life in the blue star in maintenance duty to the point she comes off kinda autism-coded, slowly learn to open up to folk, so religion is kind of a side thing.

disclaimer, i am very much agnostic, but i do appreciate religious lore and the less toxic aspects of religion, for one i detest the vatican, but i wouldn't mind exploring buddhism if i wasn't like lazy and not in the mood to get involved with religion. i was catholic for a hot second when i was younger but i kinda just stopped going and honestly? that's for the best.

I've actually heard it before myself- I was in the community back when it first happened, and people were arguing about it when it happened. Some people said that Redigit's story didn't add up with how Nintendo typically sends C&Ds, since he said he was contacted over the phone by a lawyer claiming to represent Nintendo, rather than through email or letter. It was also known back then that he was getting sick of developing SMBX because people kept requesting things. So I've always been suspicious of his claims the game got C&D'd. The website domain absolutely was, though.
