Hi all, I was thinking folks might be able to help me with this. After watching R-ACK and loving it, I got the "raocow plays romhacks" bug and went back and watched YUMP and YUMP 2. I wanna watch more but it's been so long I don't really remember what the standout romhacks raocow has played are anymore.
Anyone got suggestions for good romhacks raocow has LPd that I should watch? Throw em my way :)

I forgot he replayed asmt! I will add that to the list as well.
Re: raocow romhack LP suggestions?
He played that Lakitu hack not too long ago as a sorta filler series, but it's still nice to see him go through something more standard.
Happy to see R-ACK giving raocow a return in viewership!

I've recently re-visited SMW FreedoMN in both playing-the-game form and watch-some-cow form and it's a nice time. Game feels very wholesome/made with pure intentions (despite the more obvious vanilla level reskins you just have to get through) and the video series is some nice oldcow too. I didn't watch the whole series, just some isolated videos and then played a few worlds of the game.
Drama Mistery is a certified hood classic as well.

Re: raocow romhack LP suggestions?
i have to give a +1 to the VIP5 replay. the og VIP5 has a blaring fan in the background and i don't like old raocommentary as much either. it's too forced "teh penguin of doom" style i feel, i prefer his partly sassy modern self.
i'm torn on VIP1-3's replays since the translations are still a bit stilted (no need for a replay with Team Eye's translations though), zombie VIP6 is a bizarre LP but it entertained me while i was at the hospital years back, and I feel embarrassed watching ASPE and Re:VIP4 because my translations are far, FAR from perfect, even with Eye's edits. i think she edited VIP4 further later, actually
and no one warned me in advance to translate the in-level and cutscene text in ASPE. i hold no grudge, but i still wish people warned me. ASPE also has some really offcolor humor, cw for rape jokes, i legit cannot watch that video from second hand embarrassment. but honestly? it suffers from the same issue as VIP6 where the nadirs are exceedingly painful and annoying compared to the rest of VIP lol
Years ago I said that people just need to make better hacks and "pick up where the SMW hacking forefathers left off", but really I feel like people should just be incentivized to make more weird shit. 'the, Alpha Sphere, some of the old Japanese hacks, the jankier Kaizos that use less common assets... It's not always necessary to have a good knowledge of ASM, what matters is having fun and challenging yourself to think outside the box.
But if you just wanna make simple Mario and Kaizo stages, that's fine too. It won't attract as many people, but the main thing that matters is that the author has fun making it.
Like for me, part of the fun with using RPG Maker 2003 is just messing around and trying to make janky stuff in it, with the help of Japanese tutorials (thank you yado.tk) and some programming knowledge I've gathered thanks to SMW and whatnot. It doesn't have to be good, though I will stress that sometimes vanilla works (the default turn based system - ATB for 2003 - etc etc) is okay too if the writing, presentation and overworld mechanics are fun.
That's part of the message I wanted to give people when making levels for AAT, don't worry about high quality, just have fun. And I feel like I'd vouch for most of the stages in the hack.
As much as I'd rather not be on SMWC, even if I could (no grudges, it was just a hard time for me, and I apologize for snapping at FPzero in the CLDC thread, it's hard to pick up tone through text), I hope the Mario hacking and SMBX communities can keep prospering, even if the glimmer is that bit dimmer.
Semper Marios!

People love Mario. People are always saying that romhacks are dying but no, they just go through a cycle period. There's always a sort of lull that makes people go "Mario romhacks are dying lol", but really it's just normal for a niche community to go through that. Sonic is kind of the same and they incentivize experience in 68k ASM to make hacks stand out more, which while causing a lot of tech demos, usually results in more eye-catching work.

Adding these to my list. Currently watching Jump 1/2.
And yeah, the mario romhack scene is crazy enduring. I honestly have so much love for it. It is free from those pesky capitalistic constraints we love to chain up the art world with -- just people having a good time making amazing stuff. Makes me happy

Re: raocow romhack LP suggestions?
Apologies for putting my shit stamp in this thread again, but, yeah. I love the amateur and indie dev scenes. I don't gamedev as much as I'd like to, but it's fun.
I had a lot of stressful times in the SMW community, I still have some trauma about it, but I wish most of the people there the best, even people that I pissed off by being a shit. Growing up is tough. I also can't help but wax rhapsodic about Mario nonsense, sadly!
I'm very much exhausted from working for AAT/A3MT until like a few months back, but I had fun! And I'd probably do it again.

Re: raocow romhack LP suggestions?
Literally the reason why i'm here is that i found my way to raocow after a bunch of YT people said they would no longer be playing hacks because they're all the same and everything's already been done!
Years later: everything still has not yet been done and when i see cow upload a Mario video i know it's gonna be a great time.sigh, except that one YUMP video, whatever
