MAFAB 3 - Friendship Always Best

this is the place where lps are being talked about. it's important to talk about games being played on the internet.

Everything was credited in a text file so either the judges and the organizers didn't read it or didn't think it was an issue

I'd prefer to keep the level as is
I already spoke to Emral and it was noted that no-one knew it was AI before now.

Because of all the reasons I already talked about - because "I couldn't do it so I stole it and supported grifting and money laundering" really isn't an excuse.

Then hopefully next time you'll take what has been said in this thread (and countless other places across the internet) to heart and commission an artist to help you realize your vision instead of using AI.

With that said, the discussion of use of AI-generated images in this thread specifically should end now. It can continue somewhere else where it's more topical if people desire, or it can end outright, but it can't continue here.

Like Hoeloe is absolutely right, just. I feel like you could be less aggressive? AI art is toxic as shit but I think Winter would have realized it's a problem if you explained the issues politely. And if they wound up ignoring that, then really don't bother any further with em.

This may come off as like tone policing, but I'm saying this as an amateur artist who hates people using AI art for clout shortcuts on Twitter and such. It's pretty repulsive and I much prefer people doing messy beginner art over the bland, flavorless AI art that is mostly copypasting from established artists like Silverjow and such.

Also it gets the minor details all wrong all the time so I don't know why people use it for kink outside of that one dude who was way into gooped up eyes on Reddit or something.

(cw nsfw mention but no real details)

I regret it now. Yesterday I still thought I would have a chance of winning this contest based on the other levels I had tried. The levels were all available to play on the submissions thread

so this was a lot

The brick dragons were really nice. Practically all the problems with the encounter are issues of polish, such as the waiting time and unintuitive damaging method.

Dragon Dance was a really charming boss. It didn't seem all that fun, though, especially not on repeat attempts.
Hoeloe wrote: 1 year ago Genuinely sad and frustrated to see AI art in today's episode. It's not just a case of the output looking bad, it's the fact it's trained on illegally scraped data, it's collaging together stolen art, it's pulling rights and income streams from small artists (yes even if used like this), it's being used to grift and launder money by tech bros, it's pumping a ton of emmissions much like NFTs did, it's treating artists and their work with zero respect and using their work as a commodity and not as art. It's just all around a bad time and it's frustrating that this happened.

There's also the fact that the SMBX forums and Codehaus both banned "AI art", and that complicates the contest's position as a whole. It's extremely frustrating, and it's a shame there wasn't a clause in the submission rules for it (though it could be argued that since several major communities banned it, it falls under the "content inappropriate for the SMBX community" rule).

If I were running this contest, I'd patch out the asset with a placeholder and a notice saying that it was patched out, if not disqualify the submission outright. This really shouldn't be something we're getting anywhere near.
I have a response to this (well, these positions in general), but given the administrator decision, I've made a new thread here: https://talkhaus.raocow.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=20919

I appreciate the bunnies and no matter what happens later in the video I'm not going to make the same mistake twice of editing my post with a comment about any hot-button subject that shows up

Edit: but I will go ahead and edit it to ask any admins who see this if I can have my default/display usergroup changed back to registered users (and whatever happens in this or any future contest, to please not make my username red again). I have tried reverting it myself on multiple occasions, it won't let me.

Double edit to clarify this isn't in protest to the stuff I'm vagueposting about, I'm just tired of standing out even more than I already do from me being an argumentative butt

- Boss Comments -

10th place - "A boss level with rabbits" by wyldstrykr: I ended up having a similar experience to raocow here, albeit for different reasons. I did realize that the basic attack was for yellow enemies, but it didn't seem to knock the wizard out of it's yellow attack. After I died I went through the longcut to see if there was something I was missing that it could teach me. It turned out to basically just be a whole level though, and much like raocow I was like "I don't want to be playing a level, I want to be fighting a boss".

After learning nothing new from the level I got back to the boss. I did find out you can combo the boss while it's stunned, and I tried to do that enough to prevent it from using its yellow attack, but I only got it to around half health before my luck ran out and it used the yellow attack again. I suspected that you might have to hit the boss with the final hit of the basic attack combo to stun it, but I couldn't find a good opening to do that, so I ended up just feeding the bunnies until my super was charged (which making it defeat the boss in one fell swoop seems like a strange decision).

Speaking of strange decisions, I was so confused when the spin jump button sent Mario into the stratosphere that I actually went to check the first few seconds of raocow's playthrough to see if it was supposed to be like that, and I guess it is. Some parts of the level do seem designed around Mario having that ability, but it still seems like a strange decision to me. Also, I did not appreciate the super loud volume in the dark room.

okay... with how raocow reacts to it, im SUPRISED that i got the middle spot in the ranking and not lower raocow had fun in previous but not this one which is a real crime.
okay apology time:

im sorry for that i forgot this is MAFAB not a "make a good boss level". (i still dont know the concept of length. and design)
im sorry for the loud parts. i only download the clip, trim it and didnt adjust the volume... sorry not sorry
im sorry for the yellow part. theres 4 moveset (not including up+run) and 3 of them are in the tutorial and the fourth one is easily discover but no.
im sorry for the tutorial one. ill try to remember what comment section says and elsewhere.
im sorry for the spinjump one. couldnt make a better idea.
im sorry for the double tapping. yes. im playing on a keyboard because my controller breaks and i cant replace it. i remember having a hard time with uppercut hence the alt command. i didnt have issue about the left right tapping before... maybe if my controller didnt breaks then i probably encounter that issue.
im sorry for other things that i may forgotten (may be edited if i remember some)

okay done.

I mean, those are good lessons, but also remember that your entry was fun despite that stuff. (raocow isn't a representative player -- he has extra chance to be distracted and overlook something because he's performing for an audience, and he probably also feels extra time pressure because he needs to turn his experience into a video right after he's done playing. Note well his video description.)

Don't grovel lol, you made something with pros and cons. That's a list of lessons, not crimes.

By the way: thanks for the Elechead reference in all that. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed that little gem and have fallen behind on convincing one of my friends to play it.

even half way into the contest i can think of like 3 or 4 entries that could've easily been a pretty big thing. one of them is mine, so if it is that one then sorry god hand fellas :sheath:

Since raocow and comment section didn't have a good time, an apology is in order.

References
Up Run attack: X voice
Uppercat: a guy in x4 who does a shoryuken
Other moves and wall jump: zero voice
Super: it's from raocow I forgot witch video

Music from the cat planet cat uses persona music that reference raocow lp of sonic the werewolf (i forgot at what point)
Cat is looking for red demo
The lava part is from X7 hyena
And the mini game at the end of unnecessary level is a recreation of elec head minigame
and the boss sprite, raocow calls it a american wiZard, at some point, canadian

not a reference but this level is based on my rejected level last year
Mechanics which should I explain it clearly
Purple can be hitted by blue tele or red uppercat
And yellow can only be hit by Run which is the last movement
Most of them can be stomped tho
Super can be charged by feeding carrot to them and when it charged, it can finish the boss in one go. Killing them in other ways uncharges it and you will lose have of it by dying
You regen health and you gain health when you do combos (you get health at the end of combo or you get hurt)
I should do that picture tutorial but I sucks at art
Ty YouTube for eating my comment
Typing on phone is hard

PS: i got out of last place, but a what cost?

Well this boss is certainly difficult. I spent about an hour playing this myself and I wasn't able to beat it (the farthest I got was around 70-80%, and I can count the number of times I reached the halfway point on one hand), and then I decided I needed to take a break, so I came to see how raocow fared. I'll save my full thoughts for tomorrow, but a lot of what raocow said in the video echoes what I was thinking while playing this.

I like how one of the comments is like "it's not cool because it's just 3 images in an arena" which is kind of like...what a boss is essentially, lmao.

I really like the system and look of the boss, but BOY HOWDY a lot of the actual attacks really just look like you need to know all the tiny quirks of the fight just to stand a chance. Especially the spike ceiling. If you had like a Darksouls-like I-Frames when you attack (where you're invincible for like a half second or so by swinging your weapon), I can see this fight faring a lot better.
