Hey, this is a very good game. If you can get it all set up right like you put in the description, then this should be a fun one.

these past few LPs have been totally devoid of Ramble Cam & Tori haven't they? (okay unless you were one of our friends that had also grown up with that game but we're writing this from the prespective of the talkhaus, not a friend of ours.) well mario galaxy is a weird game for us! have words! ENGLISH! VIDEOGAMES!!!

mario galaxy is such a baffling game because to us, it kinda holds that same cognitive space as i wanna be the guy or five night's at freddys as "overly let's played game". like it was kind of the first game where every video gaming youtube channel would just go completely ham with, for some reason? and like nowadays it very much doesn't hold this reputation, hell there's probably more people playing IWBTG as like retrospectives and FNAF1 just at all than there are people playing mario galaxy as a let's play to strike it big, but for some reason it 1) has held this reputation with us and 2) retained it after all this time. to us mario galaxy is so firmly wedged in late 2000s let's play culture that it feels almost. inseparable from it sometimes, that it feels like not much a game as a result. we genuinely forget they made a mario game that was in space & gave it a sequel too sometimes, it's that bad! & when we remember it exists it is usually because of its sequel??? that one may be because of chuggaaconroy though. you would THINK when the video game that comprises our avatar is a game in SPACE we would know a lot about marios in SPACE but you're WRONG buster.

so like, where are we going with this? our point is that like this entire LP is going to be. An Experience for us. not in exactly a "this is a blind viewing" as we viscerally recall the super luigi galaxy LP by chuggaaconroy, a young frustrated emile clipping into a planet on a purple coin mission is baked into our psyche, we know SOME aspects of it just from memory & osmosis like the core plot & obviously rosalina existing & the funny hungry lumas "What is UP with them?!" stuff. but like. this is actively looking close at the video game for us. which we kinda anticipate ending bafflingly because this game has such a weird place in our mind.

case in point: what the fuck is up with these opening cinematics. WHY DOES BOWSER HAVE PALPATINE LIGHTNING POWERS AGAIN??? does he literally... ever show those again??? y'know how king dedede has lightning powers in kirby's pinball land & then he never uses them again. it feels exactly like that. also there's NO WAY nintendo would afford him that in an era where they're so obsessed with brand consistency they'll forbid former characters from ever appearing again because they violate rules set in stone well after their formulation (see: goomboss). also we gotta say stealing peach's castle was much more elegant when he built his own castle right under peach's (presumably without being caught) rather than stealing it with a UFO like that. and of course... the now-infamous stock peach sfx of her shouting "MAAARIIIOOOOOO!!!"'s name. a soundbyte that would go on to be eternally used forever & all time for all video games with mario & an upset princess peach. this game truly cursed humanity

OH RIGHT A TUTORIAL LEVEL EXISTS HUH. this entire thing feels so weird because in our memory it is. so devoid of dialogue or anything?? we don't even process it's a bunny chasing thing at first with a star bunny that pretends to be a luma & later becomes your buddy after the tutorial, in our head it's like. that tutorial planet & maybe other things happen sometimes in total silence. & then the game drops you off to the comet observatory without any real. context for it. or any mention of the lumas being adopted by rosalina? rosalina is such a weird character when you get past how pretty she is & also how cool it is they put a tall woman in the mario kart wii game (actual reason we liked princess rosalina as a child was "we knew bikes kicked ass in that game but assumed people just chose funky kong because they thought he was silly & we unlocked rosalina first after who knows how many times playing the mushroom cup multiplayer with family, we SWEAR the wiki once insisted it was 1,000 but it was NOT that!!!"). also the less said about the logistics of a planetoid with a BLACK HOLE for a core, the better. at best that thing would be always rotating around, right? at like excessive speed? at worst it'd immediately implode and collapse into itself.

&: The universe could experience heat death, and the only sound waves still travelling across it will be a bitcrushed 11050 KBPS sound file of Princess Peach shouting Mario's name.

Fun fact: I'm pretty sure the sounds effects those blue/yellow panels use are pitched to harmonize with the music depending on when during the song you touch them. It's an awesome way to create some variation in the sound effects and keep it from being repetitive or jarring.

Another fun music thing is the tambourine added on the starting tutorial planet whenever you start chasing a bunny.

Hurray for dynamic music!!!

Wow, that Sonic Unleashed vibe i got from the orchestral fanfare in the title screen. I guess vidgames were just doing that around this time, huh?

edit: do the Toads walking around holding spears and shields in the beginning sequence count as the Mushroom Kingdom's military? Do they receive military training or are the arms simply for ceremonial purposes? Has the Mushroom Kingdom "gone soft" or are Bowser's forces just that good? Excellent fodder for tonight's session of laying awake in bed unable to sleep.

This is probably the most recent game that I have nostalgia for. It came out when I was still in college, and I remember my friend and I ditching class to go pick the game up from the mall. Since it was a pre-order, I got the commemorative coin, and a bizarre phone call from Mario:

It was a good move to make Galaxy have an orchestral soundtrack. The more mature sound really helped add a layer of epicness to the whole experience. Lots of great, memorable songs here, but my personal favorite is

Melty Molten Galaxy. I just love the sick drum beats.

I don't know, but this breakdancing Toad deserves a special mention:

so, good egg galaxy. y'know, the bob omb battlefield of this video game. we're not the only one that kinda thinks it's super weird, right? like not necessarily in design; it does a nice job easing you in, using mostly static/predictable obstacles, sneakily introducing mechanics in a way where it feels natural and not like this is the Tutorial Part 2 Galaxy, and you get to beat up a dino piranha. moreso in just like, the vibes, y'know? like, good egg galaxy SURE DOES have a giant floating yoshi egg-shaped planetoid in the background & a boss that comes out of an egg. it has successfully done an Good Egg & also a Bad Egg technically. but like beyond that this entire galaxy sure feels... weird, right?

like, the starting planetoid is basically just kinda some. flat plate. with a house. and on the other side of it is some sorta fucked up castle eternally in the dark. inside this thin planet is a brick cube that feels like a 90s 3d graphics render test. then nothing says good egg galaxy like... a peanut with weird boulders with gem cores you can strike to immediately destroy them? spewing green ooze when they already look vaguely fleshy-adjacent??? these boulders are named "Clump" & hold every disease. then you end up on like a solid grassy blob, defeat one piranhap lant, and a vine connects it to yet another grassy mass except this one is another fucked up black hole-cored planet with those Spinny Bauble Things to destroy more of the Clump things. which of course vines to another weird blob planet that's a bit more like a bean maybe actually. & THEN THE BOSS PLANET WITH THE BOSS & THE PLANET!!!

you know that joke about the wet dry world negative emotional aura? how that entire level in the 64th super mario is just kind of. disconcerting, not on purpose, it just has kind of a weird aura to it if you dare to think about it too much? yeah, uh, super mario galaxy, to us, is a video game that's basically this but for ever level, but the trade-off is that it is evidently MUCH easier to just kind of not think about it too much and be like "hehe, it's like that space prince story!" instead of "what the fuck does it say about the world this game takes place in that there's weird stone rubble on most of these planetoids??? or a peanut with possibly alive boulders to move in prepetual motion??? isn't this kinda completely baffling???".

&: After raocow mentioned the idea of eating Star Bits, it's once again time to mention it for those who aren't aware, because it's always a fun thing to talk about: Star Bits are based on a real Japanese candy. If you ever want to consider eating an actual star bit, look up Konpeitō. They're apparently not that gummy-like, compared to how the game makes them look. It's actually a bit closer to those "rock candy" things that look like crystals on a stick, if you've ever had one of those, just as actual standalone things. (We've always wanted to try them ourselves...)

Man, if this was Odyssey, then collecting all of those musical notes would've given you a Moon.

I love how the fanfare for Good Egg Galaxy doesn't kick in until after Mario lands on the starting planet. Cool effect.

I think this is the only time this happens in the game, too. From what I remember, the music just starts right away for the other Good Egg missions and galaxies.

As for the Not Petey Piranha fight, it's convenient that you don't have to worry about aiming at all, but otherwise, it probably would've been too hard for the first boss in the game.

i know people complain that odyssey handing out moons like candy devalues all of them individually but have you considered that coins or one-ups are lame rewards and something that inherently feels like progress being given every minute or two is actually super good?

I gained this viewpoint while playing Tropical Freeze, but I think it's a valid design philosophy to just have token rewards for their own sake. Because in Donkey Kong, do you ever really care about the bananas that are slightly risky or out of the way, or one more extra life on top of the dozens you get every level? Or do you just get them because they're there and justify an extra bit of effort? I could take or leave the moons in Odyssey, but personally I think the Galaxy duology struck the best balance with how hard the main collectible is to get.

The comment about the Moon wasn't meant to be a complaint about Odyssey, if that's how you interpreted it as. Seeing how raocow sort of scoffed at the 1-Up reward, my comment was more like an offhand "Hey, you would've gotten a better prize for doing the same thing in another Mario game". On the contrary, I actually don't believe that having a bunch of "low effort" Moons devalues the rest of the Moons in Odyssey. As a more open world game, I think these extra Moons are a nice way to reward exploration and being thorough. And besides, it's not like SM64 and Galaxy don't have their fair share of easier Stars, too. Because there are a lot more Moons in Odyssey, there are naturally going to be a lot more easy ones to get. Not realistic to make each one of the 880 unique Moons "meaningful". It's just a completely different type of game from Galaxy, which is more linear and mission-oriented, and so the Stars in that game will generally take a bit more time to earn.

Sturg wrote: 1 year ago Fun fact: I'm pretty sure the sounds effects those blue/yellow panels use are pitched to harmonize with the music depending on when during the song you touch them. It's an awesome way to create some variation in the sound effects and keep it from being repetitive or jarring.

Another fun music thing is the tambourine added on the starting tutorial planet whenever you start chasing a bunny.

Hurray for dynamic music!!!
You can also hear this every time a coin pops out of an enemy or Mario uses a launch star. Really neat

I am aware that the EHT picture of Messier 87* isn't exactly a visible-light photo. But it still is fascinating that this is Mario Galaxy's depiction of a black hole over a decade before one was photographed.

(I know the Mario Galaxy black holes aren't always at the centre of the galaxy, being in the centre of planets too, but there seemed to be one in the middle-ish of Good Egg. Black holes in real life don't need to be at the centre of a galaxy either, it's just that Messier 87* is... I guess the musing in the image filename isn't as fascinating as i thought. [fart sounds])

Those rocks with delicious jelly-filled centres make me want a doughnut.
