The candy turret boss you fight with Spring Mario is the only part of Super Mario Galaxy i have played (just the boss, not even the level). I was watching my nephew play and he didn't want to stop and lose his level progress, so i had to offer to beat it for him while he took his bath so he wouldn't get grounded. I think he had at least a dozen lives at that point and i lost all but one of them trying to get used to the spring.

Don't really see what the problem with Guppy is. He challenges you to follow him through rings and doesn't go back on his word. It's like he wanted to be in an N64 Rare game but was too decent and got left out.

Here's some concept art of Sea Slide, and most likely Beach Bowl in the upper left. I've seen some suggest they may have been the same galaxy at some point, which is possible, I suppose. But the bowl in the middle of the ring in the right picture doesn't really resemble Beach Bowl apart from, well, being a bowl of water, so I'm not sure if I'm convinced. The upper left picture, meanwhile, is much closer to the final Beach Bowl.

There's also concept art of what's probably Buoy Base, which also had an ocean ring around it:

I'll be honest, I had never heard koopas be refered to as shellcreepers in my entire life prior to this LP, quadruped or otherwise.

They're the turtles from Mario Bros.

Hilariously enough they're named Kame-san (カメさん) in Japanese rather than the Koopas' Nokonoko (ノコノコ) so it's not just a Western "canon" thing. According to several sources like Sm4sh Wii U, Koopas evolved from Shellcreepers but like. I don't trust Nintendo to not be pulling stuff from their ass for fun. I'd rather just think that Koops and Shellcreeps are just a bunch of tartles

Wait, so is the idea that the NES Mario games featured zero Koopas, and Koopas were only introduced with Super Mario World?

Koopas were in Super Mario Bros on the NES, their predecessors were in the Mario Bros arcade game.

I can't believe the IOC still lets Mario compete at the Olympics after blatantly motor doping in the swimming race.

But no turtle enemies walked on their hind legs in any pre-SMW game, including SMB1 and 3. (I was responding to raocow's idea that "Koopas" walk on their hind legs and walking on all fours makes it a "shell creeper".)

I think the only consistent difference between Koopa Troopas and Shellcreepers is that the latter can't be jumped on without you getting hurt. The turtles in the Mario Bros.-influenced Mario Clash are referred to as Koopa Troopas instead of Shellcreepers, and since you can jump on top of them in that game, that idea tracks.

That's also why I think the evolution concept Big Nintendo is pushing is bullshit. Unless you can show me, Shellcreepers in the past of the Mushroom Kingdom, and have a Koopa call them their ancestors, in the next Paper Mario game, I will not accept it. Extra canon only matters when I want it to

raocow accidentally saying that the hungry luma turned into a universe makes me wonder if the Mario universe is secretly a particularly hungry luma, and that all life in it could end at any moment should it choose to de-transform.

Scary stuff.

i swear to althena, rubiss and ajora that raocow was doing The Hard Jump wrong but i also can't really say how you're properly meant to do it because i'm pretty sure trying to do triangle jumps in modern mario is next to impossible and you can't really chain a jump to a spin for distance at all like you can in the new smb games

You do a double jump then spin, it gives you a lot of height and that's what you need. It's a bit tight that way, but absolutely doable. You can also backflip or sideflip, then spin - raocow for some reason just utterly refused to try the spin more than once, he almost made it that time too.

He's had issues with doing the spin at the wrong time and completely halting his momentum, so that would be the reason there.
