:pal: an experiment in nostalgia and the lackthereof! it's very spyro-esque and by toys for bob, who you may know! dogs are included! :pal:

&: This following up Hotline Miami feels very silly... Also, we're cursing you with that 3D Model of Cruella in the cover art above now.

Before Toys for Bob were making Spyro, they were making Spyro.

This is very weird.

so!

this is oddball, a spotless dalmatian

she's kind of the main animal character of the movie, where she finally starts to grow spots at the end

since this has nothing to do with the movie, it's safe to assume she'll be pure white the whole game long

we'd also like to note oddball is perhaps a baffling character in a meta sense too:
• she lacks a traditional animated counterpart because the movie was live-action. this game's various 2d images of her are the closest thing to this aside from various promotional merchandise made for the movie post-release
• no voice listed except for her incarnation in the video game. we haven't watched the movie. we don't know what this means
• her "dogs" that acted as her all had spots. so those were removed in CGI. which is a hilarious visual to imagine a poor VFX team tasked with removing the spots from a dog.
• she apparently never makes a proninent appearance in this series after this video game

oddball is right! this is a character that was Made

&: I'm assuming it's like growing taller, or getting gray hairs, or some third example of a body changing over time that lacks gross connotations. But, y'know, for dogs. The alternative answer is that "we should let them do that, actually."

I was about to throw down about there being no animated equivalent for Oddball, but I looked it up, and 102 dalmatians is a separate movie from 101 dalamtians 2, which is animated. Wild.

Also, looking at percentages after each level seems to indicate there are 20 levels in the game. And as of now, it seems like there are always 6 puppies per level. This ends up with some weird math. If every level has 6 puppies, and there are 20 of them, that adds up to 120 dalmations. In a movie/game called 102 dalmations, that seems like too many.

So okay, maybe there are 3 distinct boss levels that have no dogs in them, that also tick up 5 or so percent. That would equal 102 dalmatians, which is...still too many, since there are at least 4 uncaptured dogs.

Well, i was hoping that at least three levels deep the music would stop being "bouncy boingy noises for kids". Yes, it's a game aimed at children, but so was Spyro. And... nmzxwhey? This level's song is still very bouncy, but there is a sort of extra layer to it with some more menacing/mysterious-sounding parts. I was originally going to do a bit riffing on how i had something to say about the music in levels more often than not during Spyro, but every time it would just be "this level's music has pitched percussion going pink-plonk, because it is a children's video game for kid's the child game video is game kids' chiderln videgoma".

But it would've been a bit disingenuous, because i have never watched 102 Dalmatians and don't actually remember if i saw 101 back in the day. If so, i was a barely-sentient potato and don't remember it at all. Maybe this is just how the music in the film is.

I remember the Disney Channel cartoon had a chicken as one of the main characters. They should have let us play as the chicken.

&: 102 Dalmatians & 1 Chicken didn't have the same ring to it. Though we suppose "102 Dalmatians & 1 Bird & 1 Cat" also doesn't quite have a good ring to it, either...

HEDGEHOG FACT: "Sneezy" is the Russian version of "John". I believe this would make the main character of Half-Life "Sneezy Volnost'". This game is what happens when the grub-dogs escape his murderous rampage, back into their home dimension of Britain.

I feel like Ivan was added in half the places they put him because play testers got confused navigating the level? I could see it, in this level with lots of moving parts in ye olden PS1 days when people weren't used to 3D. The coloured platforms especially feel like something that someone had to go back and add to make it easier to get one's bearings.

I'm amused at the prospect of the devs adding the rat saying the water's clean so kids don't get upset that they have to make the puppy swim in dirty water.

Music in today's level's got a vibe! I got vague Donkey Kong Country (+64? the whole Rare Kong universe, not necessarily the Super Nintendo game) vibes for some reason. Might be the sewer esthetic in combination with the music.
