I enjoyed this game a lot. It gets hard at times, but there were only a couple of screens where I felt it got really egregious. Everything else was pretty learnable.

There's some real finger-dancing when you're swapping forms *and* worlds in midair, but that didn't bother me too much. The part I didn't like was the fan rooms in the bonus area. Might also have been rough patches in the DLC trials, I don't remember those very well.

Looking forward to seeing this playthrough.

I think Calaca behaves pretty much the same way he did in the original fight - he just doesn't have his color shields. There might be other nuances making it easier, but I think it's mostly just that your health is inflated and his is lower.

His hits are definitely weaker too. The fight is intentionally adjusted so that it's very hard to lose it.

So, one comment to bring up here: The Sasha poster early on is a direct reference to Severed, the game Drinkbox made between Guacamelee 1 and 2 for console and handheld. It's another game of Mexican influence, this time built on Norteño (northern Mexico) folklore. I played it on Wii U back in the day, it was pretty decent. Still, compared to the Guacamelees or even Nobody Saves the World, it is a dark game.

Well while you're here, do you prefer the toned Juan or the Juan that's let himself go after his adventure?

So, the training bits have different conditions attached. All need money. Many require doing things that are specific to the trainer. In Doña Chamoya's case, it centers around getting chests. Flame Face, combos.

Thankfully, whenever you are able to unlock a new move, the game will go out of its way to let you know, because it's very easy to forget that screen.

So I was curious about the size difference of before and after the heart+.
Image

It's not particularly huge. If we take the size of the increase as our measurement of "one chunk of health", it looks like the original bar was 6 chunks, and you just got a 7th chunk. Not gonna lie, I was expecting a bigger increase. But hey, more health is more health!

Oh boy, after today's lava flows and red spikeballs, I can't help but wonder how much instant death is gonna play a part in this.
Thankfully, this game has very forgiving checkpointing by the looks of it.

While the hearts are small, they definitely build up over time.

So El Muñeco's chicken spam phase...I want to say it's a reference to either Cuphead's Devil fight or That One Momodora Boss. There's definitely elements to suggest either.

Starting tomorrow...

It's funny how with the prevalence of soulslike elements in this kind of games nowadays, I keep expecting raocow to lose all his money when he dies here and it always registers as weird when he doesn't.

I feel like you're misreading the other two money upgrades, rao. They're very specifically for specific circumstances, and the latter of the two really requires massive combos to ever be useful.

Those upgrades lead to huge amounts of money over time. They are absolutely worth prioritizing.

Yeah, Unikitty is in the piñata emporium. And while I played this before, I didn't remember seeing Tom Servo in there, but he's there. Also, Viva Piñata is referenced, for sure.

Before you make such broad strokes, it's worth noting: Flame Face has a skill upgrade where your combo meter resets after 3 hits instead of one. This makes it rather easy for even someone like raocow to rack up massive combos. There are also challenges later in the game that kind of hinge on you having this skill upgrade. Flame Face's whole skill tree is all about racking up big combos and reaping the rewards from them, even for people who have trouble dodging and avoiding hits.

Ah, Guacamelee 2, the sequel to one of my favorite games of all time. Since it’s pretty much more of the same, I usually group it with the original game in discussions. Perfect mix of platforming, combat, and really-stupid-yet-hilarious gags.
