quoth our thoughts in the comments: we have had the experience of playing this game with a trackball before! it's... it's un-BEAR-able with it tbh. standard maze games and non-continuous movement do not generally mix as-is, either you need to make it a puzzler where standing still is advantageous for the sake of timing or other such things, need to have basically bullet time where the enemies don't move when you don't move, or both.
this game does neither of those things.
imagine a pac-man game where you can literally just Stop. also because of the specific controls you have to deal with, you will literally just be forced to Stop for a few frames mid-walking. doesn't sound productive, and unsurprisingly, it's not very productive in practice. basically the only good thing is it does look alright, buuut as an atari game in 1983, it was pretty much screwed over from day one, huh.
&: "GET THE GEMS BENTLEY BEAR" sounds vaguely threatening...

I feel that as a witch, I must now find a bear to antagonize. Anyone has one I can borrow?

It's not supposed to?

Extremely cool fact about the first level:
the letters on the castle represent those of the top high score!
Two other cool, non-spoilery things:
1. The Gem Eaters' animation. They're so happy!
2. The mere fact that this got an Atari VCS/2600 port at all. Funnily enough, the isometric perspective actually accidentally benefitted the port due to being able to make vertically-symmetrical levels, like most games on that console had due to VRAM limitations, and stay within the spirit of the original graphics and gameplay.

Okay the weird menacing jingle, someone in the Youtube comments mentioned that it sounds like the part where the X-ATM092 makes its grand debut in Final Fantasy VIII during the Dollet Siege sequence, but to me it sounds more like the extended percussion and violin filled 20 second intro of Don't Be Afraid (the random battle theme) that I sometimes found in a few uploads. But all of the uploads that I can find start at the actual song as can be heard in the game's random battles, and not at the weird intro. So I have no idea what the fuck.
I might look up an FF8 playthrough to check if its the same song. I could play the game on Mednafen or my Vita's PSP emulator but there is a lot of dialogue and cutscenes in the first few hours that it'd take like half an hour at least.
Someone get idol in here once Banjo starts for reals.
