Pinball is incredibly fun and good and great when you're not playing it to beat it
I'm not doubting you, it's just even when I just play pinball for fun (usually with my brother) the games just like to drain my ball while I can't do anything about it, short of picking up the machine. Though the game I usually play (The Twilight Zone) has a lot of spots where the game can just end your ball if it feels inclined to. Like there's these bumpers near the outlanes, ramps that are very scary if the ball doesn't go all the way up them...
Despite that we still manage to have fun usually so that's what matters.
*ahem*

Kirby Golf. The courses get more complex. Good luck!

I've tried playing through Dream Course like three separate times in my life, I love the game but god is it hard to optimize <.<; I've "beaten it" but never "finished it" per se.

Also, to note: L/R just turn you to 45-degree angles, you don't have to worry about going off-grid with them.

i like how raocow started off this lp saying he'd do a loop 2 but in the end he just ended up grinding for silver in each video like a weenie
smw hacks and celeste really do (teach you to) be like that, not even just kaizos

looking forward for papa dedede (dadede) fight, i remember it being like

a huge mech?

i want to see how a boss battle can be made in the hal golf engine.

special shoutouts to peter the whale and the funky bunch being in fucking world 8 like goddamn i thought iceberg ocean was gonna be like course 6? the star and moon campfire looks much more like a finale. love those crusty mid to late 00s exgfx tho, their pure, pristine kdc forms are good but in a different way

color the sky with our stars once more, kirby, our valiant little hero of the cosmos!

example b of games that you wouldn't think could physically support a boss battle but do: bust-a-move (snes)

honourable mention to krypton egg (amiga) because even though arkanoid DOES have boss fights, the boss fights in this game are literally just shmups. like dude you had a model.

Did you know that these are the only courses that are physically impossible to hole in one, even via TAS?
Normal Course:
3-1, 5-3, 5-4
Extra Course:
3-1, 3-5

holy shit @ extra 3-4

anyway

Various hole comments because, much like Drew Magary and his dad, I can't help myself.

* For Extra 3-1, I was surprised you didn't even seem to think to try a backspin shot for shot 1. The trampoline is there to give the height necessary to get all the way back up to the platform. (The guide marker didn't show this because the guide marker never accounts for hazard terrain; the game probably assumes the player has figured this out by Extra 3.) Ultimately, though, the life sacrifice method worked out because the respawn replacement is so perfect, so I can't critique this too hard.

* For Extra 3-2, the likely-intended solution to "safely" get up the mountain with your first shot is to land an air shot on the red Warp tile. That gives you free extra movement in the direction of the enemies and significantly cuts the risk of getting hosed by the conveyor belts.

* For Extra 3-6, had you gone for the Hi-Jump next to you first, you would have had it in your back pocket ready for use when you needed additional forward distance/momentum, making that hole a very viable hole-in-one candidate.

Also, a thought:

Depending on how burned out you are feeling about Kirby Golf mechanics, once Extra has runs its Course (ohohoho), I'd like to suggest you give two-player mode a try. There are eight eight-hole courses (four Normal, four Extra), and they are entirely different from single-player mode. They are admittedly more set up for "grab as many stars as you can" rather than "solve the hole-in-one puzzle", but it would still be neat to see at least one, even if you decide after one that you don't like it and want to move on.

(Obviously the second player would also be you, unless someone out there has devised Kirby Golf netplay. ...Someone out there has probably devised Kirby Golf netplay.)

I imagine it's possible to use RetroArch or Nintendo Switch Online. Yes, there is an official netplay for this game.

Yup! There's a Whispy Woods course, a Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright course (which introduces an entirely new board mechanic because why the hell not), a Kracko course, and a Gordo course, and they each have Normal and Extra forms.

The 2P courses also have a unique enemy that functions as Mix, where you ram your face into it, watch the roulette wheel spin while the rest of the world is paused like some sort of JoJo's bullshit, hit a button at a random time, and pray to $DEITY that you don't land on Parasol.

Re: Kirby's Dream Course - the force

An individual-hole practice mode for a game like this would be nice. I will admit I actually do prefer the challenge of a "here are eight holes, you get one shot at each to string together a quality score across all of them" approach, though. The pressure fuels me in a very satisfying way.

But my perspective is likely to be different from someone who is constantly on a video-game-playing schedule that they can't deviate from very much.

Anyway, here's the Course 6 music, because it's an excellent track that deserves to be heard on its own.

Something about this game that I think tends to mislead you into unlikely roundabout solutions to problems presented by the boards is that you tend to forget that active abilities stay active within the same shot even if you pick up another ability. Extra 7-5 is a good example: If you had activated Spark before getting Tornado, you still would have been in Spark Mode and destroyed the tree right before the hole. It adds an interesting extra layer to the problem solving.
