The reference to Mystic Square's Extra Boss with Incinerating Tear Dolls was a nice touch. It doesn't look like the fire is even using preset graphics at all and is instead being generated completed by code using tons of random variables contained within a pattern. If SMBX can actually do something like that now, the 2D graphical possibilities are virtually endless.

By the way, if WhimWidget is reading this thread, how long did it take you to make it all?

I forgot when I started. I think I messed around with it sparadically across September, through to Mid November? I can't really say precisely how much time went into it all.
I started with the sprites in September, and I think I started with the stage itself in October (while still adding to the sprite sheets).

Apparently the Mega Salad went into your item box because SMBX2 thought it would clip you into a block.

Also wondering how I never noticed the fliprus there so I could flag it as as an SMBX2 enemy that didn't have a proper A2XT replacement graphic but whatever

Current Belief from WhimWidget was that Calleoca was somehow able to jump over the goal physicsbox.

It looks like this level was a bit of a blind spot for me too. At first that random Calleoca ghost NPC caught me by surprise; I've died in the level and retried before but I don't ever recall her showing up while testing. Thinking about it some more, though, I might have seen her in the editor and just... didn't ever register it in my brain somehow?

As WinterSweater said, something happened that caused the hidden layers to appear and the events to misfire. The ending in particular broke because it uses some lua code to manage the camera position and transition to the cutscene, but said code waits on an event that's normally triggered by collecting the goal, and because SMBX's event and layer system were on the fritz that didn't happen this time so the code never ran.

And yeah, the SMBX2 mega mushroom is programmed to go into the reserve box if it'd cause the player to clip into an unbreakable block. The player always grows up from where their feet are, so being up in the air meant you would've grown through the ceiling.

Man, the smbx mega mushroom kinda feels bad to use because mario/whoever stops whenever they break a block instead of running straight through it, unlike in nsmb where he just kinda keeps up his momentum like nothing happened

Other than that, this level was pretty neat

I just realized that the level uses flurries because they resemble the Fall Guys bean people

Still haven't reproduced the events-and-layers bug so it's not clear if this is an urgent issue that needs to be patched ASAP or a level-specific thing. But since the level seems to be working correctly in the dev repo for the most part, I'm going to give the flurries level-specific resprites to revert them to their vanilla Mario graphics, fix a couple other oddities, and then record a video of Winter Run as WinterSweater intended.

Bugs reproduced and identified! Disregard what I said before about the ending breaking, it was completely unrelated to the other bugs and Whim and SAJ were right about the actual cause.

The other stuff was caused by an SMBX 1.3 bug with the "Level - Start" editor event. It should be a fairly easy fix, but due to irl circumstances nobody on the team can fix it tonight. Other levels raocow has already played might have been affected, but we have confirmed that none of the remaining levels use "Level - Start", so no emergency patch is needed tonight.

(Clarification: Not just with "Level - Start" but Redigit fails to execute any and all autostart events upon level reload if the "Restart last level on death" flag is active in an episode. I wonder if a fix for this could be patched in in future SMBX2 versions...)

Second, regarding the stuff folks have been saying in the video comments about not getting notifications for the videos... I haven't been getting them either, but I have a theory as to why: I've noticed the private videos in the playlist after they've been uploaded but before they're made public, and it seems like the exact time these videos go live varies... are you manually making them public when the time comes, raocow? And if so, do you publish your other videos the same way or just this series? Because the bell does seem to work with all your other uploads.

Someone (I forget who) signed up to make a level, but then they had to back out with I think less than a week left. Rather than shuffle things around to have an extra gift day, rixi went and did this (though at first it was much more basic, then they went back and expanded it for the dec 10 patch)

nope, they are set up the exact same way as all my other videos. the only difference is that they are not monetized.

On the note of the tail costume, those aren't valkyrie wings, they're antlers. I think all the states have been shown by now, so I wonder if anyone can correctly name the character every powerup state (besides big and small) is a reference to? :3c
Bonus points to whoever can guess what the tanooki statue is since I don't think we'll even get a chance to see it in this LP.

edit: I stand corrected, there's one level toward the end which raocow can get the powerup in. So it's possible, but it might be missed. If he doesn't get it in that level I'll share it here in the thread, but I'd still like to hear folks' guesses until then.
