Re: La-Mulana 2 - flourishing out there in this big stupid world
Good news: I looked into Nigoro after you said they were exiting the games industry, and found an article from only a couple weeks ago where they announced at an expo they're starting work on a new game that's "science-fiction horror" oriented and decidedly not like La-Mulana. So Nigoro lives! However, I think it's safe to say this is likely the end of the tale of La-Mulana, which honestly I'm happy for. Other than exploring the origins of the Mother (which honestly I prefer being kept vague) it feels like there isn't really anywhere else the series could go, and this is the perfect place to end.
In any case, excellent job on an excellent LP. It was fun to see you breeze through things that I was stuck on for hours while also getting inordinately stuck on things I didn't think twice over. Looking forward to [Mystery Box].

And so Bonladay or whatever it was called on La-Mulana's intro map was never relevant to anything.

Re: La-Mulana 2 - flourishing out there in this big stupid world
Oh phew! The La Mulanas are among my favorite games of all time (especially the soundtracks, hot damn!) so hearing that the devs might be leaving the game industry was heartbreaking. I can respect the decision to be done with La-Mulana, though. Would've liked Tower of Oannes but I'm plenty happy with what we got.Donut wrote: ↑3 years ago Good news: I looked into Nigoro after you said they were exiting the games industry, and found an article from only a couple weeks ago where they announced at an expo they're starting work on a new game that's "science-fiction horror" oriented and decidedly not like La-Mulana. Just to confirm what was said above, I don't think Naramura/Nigoro have said anything about getting out of games, and they're still actively supporting LM2 and releasing LM series stuff (soundtracks and whatnot). Not really sure where raocow got that information from... while neither LM game was a massive commercial success, I think the team is satisfied with what they accomplished with them, as they well should be.
Naramura has been tweeting some videos of their new game, MEDIUM-NAUT, even; it's made in Action Game Maker MV and seems to have extremely good jumping.

Also, I don't know what all raocow has been told to do in the bonus episode, but I would like to suggest whipping Xelpud's statue on the head a whole bunch (you'll know when it's been whipped enough) then going to see him. Also visit Nebur like 40 times.
the Spaulder, which was the one item raocow didn't get. In both games.

My reaction was basically "Medium-Naut, huh? Seems like a strange name for what looks to be setting up as a run and gun game, like... the '-naut' bit I get, but what does Medium mean? Is it like a half baked take on 'Hardcore' or something?"moogy wrote: Naramura has been tweeting some videos of their new game, MEDIUM-NAUT, even; it's made in Action Game Maker MV and seems to have extremely good jumping.
Then I went looking, and saw a clearer image of who our protagonist is...

Yeah, his explanation of the title is that it's basically medium (in the spiritual sense) + astronaut.helucard wrote: ↑3 years agoMy reaction was basically "Medium-Naut, huh? Urd: the real final boss of La-Mulana 2.
It turns out that there's really not much to the escape if you know what you're doing. I'm a little surprised that Nigoro made the decision not to add a time limit to the escape sequence like the first game, which would have added a lot more tension. But it was probably removed because they gave the player the ability to hard save, and they wanted the player to explore the crumbling ruins to find those extra bits.
A stupid thing that can happen when you defeat Verdandi and Urd is that their glossary ROMs can fall into the pit, forcing you to reload and beat them again. Because I did this all at once instead of a separate play session, it messed up the flow of the escape. And since these were the last two glossary entries I needed, I got the "Encyclopedia Completionist" achievement, but a weird thing happened where I also got Jormungand's glossary entry again:
Anyway, I'm sad that this series has come to an end. This was one of the few LPs where I specifically made time to tune in shortly after the video was posted, something I can't really do anymore. I cared a lot about this game, and seeing my favorite LPer play it blind felt akin to experiencing the game for the first time again.

The only bad part about there almost certainly not being a La-Mulana 3 is that there really are no other games like this series. I love it so much.

Is it possible to leave through the main entrance in Roots of Yggdrasil during the escape sequence, or do you have to use the precipice?

Congrats on clearing the game (on hard even) and nice work from voltgloss on the amazing notetaking.
Exit door is covered by rocks so you cant get out. Pretty sure all ways into hades are also caved in so you cant be clever and escape via a false gate either.
also, disappointing as it is, even if you use the timestop, you cant end up saving freya's brother. Also I went to check the guy in the immortal battlefield who's sealed because his device is described as powered by the ruins, but that thing is still running even during the escape so rip that guy and the 3 goddesses, they get to be free just in time to have the whole building cave in on them.
Honestly, the whole escape sequence feels kinda tacked on. two optional fights that arent very complex, just there to make you work for your 100% glossary

La-mulana 2 is one of the few puzzle games where i actually managed to solve things on my own instead of looking it all up. Even if the bosses are all sorts of jank, the spritework is amazing and its still one of my favorite games. If they are infact making another game, I'm looking forward to what they can make when they arent restricted to kickstarter budget/timelines and gameplay based on an msx game parody.

It's been an absolute pleasure accompanying raocow and everyone on the journey through both the original La-Mulana and this sequel. Thanks for play, and thanks for watch.

"things said by raocow while playing the original La-Mulana," to reflect and homage moments of foreshadowing and prescience during his playthrough of the first game - and to gently rib the sequel for those elements that hew rather closely to the first game.

I've just one last thing to add, since it wasn't brought up in the cleanup video. While it appears as though Freya resigns herself to death if you find her in the escape sequence, if you escape after defeating the Jotun which kill her brother, there is a minor change to the run sequence where the fairies rush off from the group, and the camera pans to find them gathered around a collapsed, tired, but still living fairy queen. And in the last part of the post-credits scene, when the fairies pass by the waterfall next to the village, you get one final shot of what is now likely the last of the sixth children:

That second half of the video being full of text was unexpectedly interesting with Nigoro's development commentaries. I didn't know that Nigoro made Rose and Camellia, the silly literal slap game that I've seen streamers play casually.
