Sonic Story is a mod for the original 2004 freeware version of Cave Story that replaces the main character with Sonic the Hedgehog and disposes of the gunplay, health, and weapon level systems in favor of classic 2D Sonic run-and-jump gameplay complete with ring collecting. nothing else is changed outside of a handful of bits of dialog that make reference to the main character's build, name, or history.

it's a really interesting spin on Cave Story's existing structure, and the areas are as fun to run through with sonic speed as any sonic zone, though it runs into some rough patches with boss designs not being adjusted for the new gameplay.

the adventure continues with Boss Fights That Necessitate Editing

hoo boy. balfrog may have been a challenge, but omega sets a trend that almost every boss to follow it will continue. from this point on, the mod's gameplay is mostly gonna be split between "interesting traversal of terrain in various areas" and "bosses which are oppressive forces until you understand how to cheese them"

i ended up having less trouble with this boss than i made it seem in playing it and in editing it? i still kept my silly editing thing because it's silly and funny, and because on my successful run with the boss it still illustrates the main problem with it, but the boss still took up less of the video than "that boss that took me three hours to beat across two different play sessions my first time playing" seems like it should have

and that's that! thanks to everyone who was interested in this; it made for a fascinating experience with a lot of highs that made me love it and lows that made me dread recording it, but it all went reasonably smoothly in the end.

sonic story (the mod) hasn't been updated since a couple of fixes when it was put out in december 2019, so it might be unlikely that it gets undated in the future, but i hope someday this mod gets some tweaks to make it more palatable. i think it deserves to be its best self

huh, that's a thought i never considered! guess i was to enamored by having some basic cave story gunplay to use for that whole stretch. honestly, super sonic would work really well with that final ballos phase...
