Way back in 2013, raocow held a vote in the request grab-bag for what SMW ROM Hack he would play next. After a week or so of voting, voting ended and roaocw proceeded to play the winning selection: 3000 Leagues in Search of Bowser.

Fast forward six years later, and raocow finally plays the runner up.

NOTE: Due to to the age of this hack, it will not run on original hardware, or accurate emulators such as Mesen-S or higan. On bsnes, you must enable "Echo shadow RAM". On snes9x, you must enable "Separate Echo Buffer from RAM".

I can't stop thinking how Mario looks like those Koopa enemies who wear fake, round Mario heads. Anyhow this looks cute and fun. I also genuinely like how everything looks, a crude kind of charming.

Also wow that Marisa Land music hit me in a particular nostalgic spot. How has raocow not played any of those! (Super marisa world doesn't count)

I believe this was the exact inspiration 1UPdudes had for this little series.

Seeing the submarine part in this made me realize that I've been missing that kind of janky hyper romhacky stuff in modern hacks. Nobody does minecart segments anymore. I don't care if they're guaranteed to be terrible. I just like to see weird stuff get hacked into mario world.

Hey raocow, it sounds like you're using ZSnes just to avoid crashes but in case you're not aware, if you can record BSnes fine then in the future you should use that. One of the recent updates to it added a compatibility option so that roms that don't crash in crap emulators like ZSnes won't crash in BSnes either. (I think that this version hasn't made it to release quite yet though.)

Newer versions of snes9x also have echo buffer compatibility options to accommodate for old hacks.

Is it just me or do a lot of the levels in this game feel cramped in their design? Not a good or bad thing necessarily but still

I wonder if changing animations up for the barrels would help with how they feel. I don't recall playing any hacks with them myself but from what I've gathered it sounds like adding a negative offset to the animations would feel a lot better. raocow's mentioned in the past that you have to press it earlier than it feels you should iirc so that would probably help some.

It feels a bit like TSRPR/TSRP2R in that regard. Last time I saw those games I realized just how cramped their level designs were, especially 2R.

I've noticed this in a lot of mario hacks, and actually all over the 2019 vanilla level competition. I think maybe it's a very "designerly" kind of trait. I figure with less space for mario to move around in, you're more able to control exactly where mario is going to be, so the obstacles can be more carefully placed and hopefully lead to much more complex and interesting setups. The tradeoff of course is that the player doesn't get to have as much room to goof around and play it their own way. It's very much the designer dictating how you're going to play. I figure it shows up in a lot of hacks because people who make hacks are obviously going to be people who are interested in creating levels and want to get into the nitty-gritty of it. A commercial game is selling itself on a lot more.

I mean, yeah, like NastCF said, it's not a good or bad thing, just different. This is obviously just me spouting nonsense of course. I'm no expert on level design (actually I'm pretty lousy)

Also the tomato butt makes me feel very unsafe.

I've never been able to put it into words before but this is something that's always felt weird to me in The Second Reality Project 2 and its reloaded version
