VIP 5 2019 - To everyone there is a boon, and a time to every rom hack under heaven
(´・ω・`)
And so it is written, that at the denouement of The Third Recital of the fourth instalment in the episodic narrative known as the Very Important Person saga, the Holy Bovine of Dubious Internet Popularity, known as 'raocow II of Quebec', was notified of the presence of deafening ventilation equipment on his prior audiovisual recordings of the fifth instalment of said series. Upon hearing this news, he presently resolved to correct this matter by promptly waiting for a clandestine shamanic circle (whose names are not recorded in history) to exorcise the demons of ancient AsSeMbly magicks that resided within this work, and reshape its foreign glyphs into a language that vaguely resembled their own.
Shortly after making his vow to perform The Second Recital of this work, raocow II died unexpectedly in what is now known as "The Second Real-Life Core Tragedy of 2018", and it would be his successor (raocow III) to fulfill the task, one whole solar cycle after it was first proposed. Thus began the event which would mark the end of the Third Golden Era of VIP in the reign of the House of raocow. A period of similar prosperity would not be seen again until the advent of the Fourth Golden Era of VIP[REDACTED]

So anyway, this hack is pretty cool I think. It was released in 2011, which was a good three years after the previous entry. Quite a long time considering the previous entries were all released within about a year from each other. This also means that on raocow's previous playthrough of the hack shortly after it came out, he had already developed the LP philosophy of not using savestates every couple of seconds. In contrast to the replays of the previous entries, this playthrough is therefore not so much for the purpose of doing a 'proper' run; I think he just wants to play the hack again more than anything.
In terms of overall design VIP 5 is mostly what you would expect from an entry in the VIP series, especially 3 and 4. This one stands apart from those in terms of custom ASM though. At this point in the series you'd expect stuff like a fully custom final boss and maybe some stage gimmicks, but this one has quite a bit more than that. Though ASM density tends to be a bit weighted towards the end-game, one notable feature you can see throughout the entire hack is the overworld, which has custom-coded graphics that make much more thorough use of the SNES' capabilities in terms of colour depth and the like.
But where there's nearly-ten-year-old custom ASM there are going to be emulation shenanigans. On top of that, updates to the original hack introduced further issues including fatal crashes that happened regardless of the emulator, on certain levels. I'll bring these up and try to explain them as they become relevant, but the version raocow is playing, while being based on the latest version officially released (v1.05), has had all of these issues fixed (save for a couple minor things), and it has been tested to work on Snes9x, BSNES, and even real hardware. As usual, it's also been fully translated into English.
You can find this version of the hack in this thread of ours.

That is exactly the reaction I was going for, thank you.
Remember when he said at the end of the JUMP 1/2 LP that there's an invisible list of things to play as they get released?

When I first found raocow and started watching him, it was near the end of VIP5, so this'l be interesting to me.
It wasn't until S-Mario though that I started watching daily. Re-do when? /s

Wow, raocow's VIp5 LP was 8 years ago? Geez, time sure flies. In any event, I'm excited for this!

Thing about the whole "VIP has always had sprite replacements": the first VIP in particular was written in such a way that always seemed to assume the characters were vanilla Mario & friends, so there's reason to believe that the sprite replacement version was added later.
I'm gonna call the LP title gimmick here:

3 levels in and I already miss Jump and Jumphalf saving your dragon coins. That should be industry standard now if they're gonna be tied to unlocks

And possibly what's being said at the 5:00 mark? With it being the 5th Vip and all
Re: VIP 5 - Like easy beginnings to one embarking on a long, long trip.
Dragon coins don‘t actually unlock anything in the VIP series (unless they‘re unlocking something inside a specific level, like a secret exit). I suppose the indicator on the overworld is just there for bragging rights.strongbadman wrote: ↑4 years ago 3 levels in and I already miss Jump and Jumphalf saving your dragon coins. That being said, I believe VIP 5 is actually one of the most reasonable entries of the series in terms of getting all the coins, at least I can‘t think of any level off the top of my head that really required me to grind it for more than a couple of minutes. Nothing like the Dream Castle in VIP 4 at the very least!
I‘m really looking forward to this redo, despite being 8 years old at this point the hack still holds up in my opinion.
this is getting laundromatic
Re: VIP 5 - Like easy beginnings to one embarking on a long, long trip.
8 years and I can pretty much complete the info textboxes from memory..
I must have rewatched it semi-recently or something cause I normally suck at remembering stuff.
Wonder how our collective memory will affect this lp; differing from a blind one.

Re: VIP 5 - Like easy beginnings to one embarking on a long, long trip.
VIP 5 was the first raocow LP i ever watched, so this is going to be an interesting experience!
Also, i cannot hear the words "It's been" without being tempted to follow them up with "ONE WEEK SINCE YOU LOOKED AT ME" which is honestly a problem because it's a fairly common thing to say.

Whoa wait a sec. How old is the VIP series? I thought it was more recent than that. The furthest entry in the line is 9 years ago?
I really love that title screen. I've also forgotten everything about this.
