Last Ranker is another RPG with less traditional controls.
You have a constantly filling action bar, and each face button does an action with different action costs. Little if any cursor use in battle.

Legend of Legaia is pretty much still turn based, but you can choose combos.

Granstream Saga's in battle system plays more like a combination of a 3D fighting game and OoT's Z Target.

Legend of Dragoon has Timed Hit combos.

Mana series is pretty much the standard Action RPG, but controls can be awkward and using items/spell can be awkward.

Ys is pretty good, but it plays more like Zelda.

Legend Of the Heroes: Trails In the Sky plays almost completely like a normal turn-based JRPG, but battles play it a bit like small tactics battles.

Shadow Hearts and its sequels (Shadow Hearts: Covenant and Shadow Hearts: From the New World), all PS2 games, have turn-based combat where every player action in battle requires timed button presses on the "Judgment Ring."

Their prequel, Koudelka (PS1), has turn-based combat play out on a small tactical grid-based map. Though to my recollection/opinion, the "tactics" involved/available are fairly minimalistic. (I have a soft spot for Koudelka but damn it's a weird beast.)

Parasite Eve and Vagrant Story (both PS1) have real-time movement in battle until you press a button that pauses the action and extends a "wireframe" out from your character. Its range depends on what you're using to attack, and you can then select and execute your attack from menu(s) turn-based style, after which you'll have a cooldown period while real-time movement resumes and continues. Vagrant Story also adds to this mix the ability to execute combos with timed button presses.

Fun Fact: Koudelka shared programmer credits with Mana 1-3.

I knew they shared the composer, but additional programmers as well? Interesting.

!

tbh I can see raoguy enjoy LoL if only because the battle gimmick provides the illusion of being a fighting game

anyway I vote for a LoL LP

(disclaimer: Legend of Legaia is my favorite RPG ever)

While it's a fun gimmick, it's not long before it just feels like a normal rpg and you get lazy and use auto. I would rank it pretty low in the "RPGs With Interactivity In Battle" category.

There's at least constantly a degree of strategy to choosing which attacks you use - decision-making needs to take into account equipment setup and enemy type, never mind AP management (Auto uses Hyper Arts attacks willy-nilly and doesn't seem to care about whether any given attack will actually hit an enemy).

Granted, it's not rocket science, but it's several shades away from "press x to win". Unless you actively grind for a while, I guess.

All that being said I'll be the first to admit Legaia would not make for a good raoguy LP and that my request was mostly tongue-in-cheek. I'd still pay Texa$ to see it happen, though.

If it wasn't 3D, raocow would probably really enjoy KH. Which is... what distorted travesty kinda is so
