If the final climb wasn't such a weird difficulty cliff out of nowhere, I'd be completely at peace with Labyrinth Zone. I think it introduces "flashy speed section" (with special sprites just for it!) mixed with "slow burn platforming" quite well. Especially because you rarely have to JUST wait for the latter part, it gives you something to do.

It also gives you a neat challenge on replays (and you will do those, considering there's no save feature...): how long can you go before you HAVE to gulp a bubble? As you're getting better at the underwater physics and the level layout in general, you can pull off some neat speed feats.

Well, I mean, I don't know if he has a fetish for that sort of thing. That's not my business. It's more that Travis has a lot of fun acting macho and has exactly the kind of sense of humor where he would over-exaggerate that sort of thing for the sake of silliness.

Fake edit: My apologies, that was not my intent. I guess this is what I get for assuming Sonic fans would be familiar with Travis. <_<

Obviously this is because the waterfall is the source of the rising water and by standing under it sonic is able to drink the water and prevent it from rising

Somewhere else in labyrinth zone is a drain that ensures the water can drain out and flow back into the waterfall

Renewable energy, only in sonic land

I'm surprised a legit porcupine character hasn't shown up in the Sonic series yet.

Fun Sonic Facts!

While designing stages, Naoto Oshima was struck one day by a poster in the Sonic Team office showcasing the beauty of outer space. That image of a beautiful starry night sky gave him the idea for Starlight Zone. By the time Sonic Team had progressed enough on the game to begin work on the last three stages, Labyrinth, Star Light, and Scrap Brain, they had gained a great understanding of the engine's capabilities, and as such went a little crazy with the moving platforms in Starlight Zone.

You didn't get the good ending, LP ruined forever.

You should have just killed yourself when you lost all your rings, to restart the stage.

Here's something mildly aggravating to know after the fact: there's a set of five ring boxes literally right above the goalpost of Star Light Act 2.

It's Sonic 1, though, so missing out on all the emeralds doesn't matter. It doesn't really matter in Sonic 2 either, come to think of it.

Today we watched raocow unlearn his own information as he went from "you have to stand on the edge to go higher" to "i think you have to stand on the edge" to "maybe you have to stand on the edge?"
Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

Awoo wrote: 4 years ago Wasn't Sonic originally brown spined before running on Dr. Robotnik's treadmill thing according to original Sonic lore, anyhow?

A cola spill made Robotnik evil, originally. What're the odds of that

That's the origin story used by Stay Sonic, the stand-alone promo comic and Sonic the Comic (Fleetway UK). The accident also involved the Retro-Orbital Chaos Compressor, the Chaos Emeralds themselves, and a fridge with bad eggs in it - the incident turned Sonic blue and turned the kindly but mad Dr. Ovi Kintobor into Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. Archie comics and SatAM didn't have this origin story, nor did any game.
Thank you SO much, I'm so glad I wasn't misremembering this as a real thing all these years. I'd seen the comic as a kid but could never find it again. I have not, admittedly, looked recently, but in the 00's it was like the thing didn't exist so I started kinda doubting myself.

Outside of Green Hill, Star Light is the best stage when it comes to getting that speed and momentum going along with some occasional precision jumping. Always liked this zone the most after that first one because of that fact. Every other zone feels like you should take it very carefully to the point where you stop quite a bit. Not here!

KobaBeach wrote: 4 years agocant you still get to the special stage in scrap brain 1?
Don't think there are any special rings in Scrap Brain. You get ten chances overall to get six emeralds, and it ends in Star Light, Act 2.

I don't think it's that big a deal, but even though you only get an alternate ending for clearing the game with all 6 emeralds, it still feels like you're technically missing out on some of the game's content since you never played the 6th Special stage. I kinda wonder about the viability of adding a playthrough of that special stage from a savestate just for completion's sake. Just like how if this were AtMM and there's some extra bit of content that's locked away behind repetitive gameplay, and someone would give you a savestate in order to show off that last bit of content.

But then again, maybe it's for the best to not include special stages in your "All the Sonics" project because that would also mean playing all the Blue Sphere stages in Sonic 3&K and Mania...
