To be entirely fair, this was in the days of Really Hard Games. Mario Bros and Contra in the 80s were single hit death games. Even 3 years after Sonic released, Donkey Kong Country was made. Single hit deaths were a staple of some Big Name Games.
Grounder wrote: 2 years ago There's a 1990 Sonic prototype out there, Naka is either misremembering or lying.
I do wonder where exactly the distance between "completion" and "release" was, exactly... But now I'm curious to see this prototype and learn when it was from, like, was it legit a 1990 prototype, or just early 1991?

Yeah, I was the one misremembering. The build date is unknown.

(edit: likely early 1991)

SPORTS! I love sports. Sports are great. In all seriousness, looks like a halfway decent minigame aside from having to chuck that ball off the track to get the high scoring targets in the last one.

I just swapped to a fresh pair of earphones and i suppose i shouldn't be surprised that this game's audio has a low end.

Fascinating that they're still using the Deem Bristow voice clips (i recognise "i should've tried a little harder" from SA2) for Eggman in multiplayer. I guess it just wasn't part of Mike Pollock's contract to provide those, or multiplayer was added after all the voice work was complete?

Sure seems like this is just a late port from the get go, but at least the gameplay's different. Pretty sure later ones get a story mode to at least separate themselves from the console counterparts. Probably won't be the case here.

Just out of curiosity, where were you able to listen to Conrad Schnitzel Schnitzler's "Mercury Arc Valve?" Schnitzler is one of those guys I've always been really intrigued about, he really carved out his deep, bizarrely specific niche in music history.

SE has been awful for years now, ever since they started cutting games up to sell more products. And appointed Nomura to do things that are not just drawing cool monsters.

Wow, olympics.

Probably better to have that happen than to have its corpse dragged through the mud. SaGa with 4 jpop dudes and barebones action/turn-based hybrid combat would be just rubbing salt on the wound.

These sure are some olympics that are happening.

Fun Olympic Facts: The cycling event in this game isn't actually Pursuit. The Pursuit event starts with the two cyclists on opposite sides of the track so that they "pursue" each other rather than racing side by side. They do this because the whole slipstream thing is actually a huge deal in cycling, so when they start next to each other it devolves into a race to not be in front of the other person rather than to complete the course as fast as possible. There's another event that does start side by side and it is hilarious:

I appreciate the realism of the game even simulating the physical torment Olympians put themselves through in order to train and compete.
