Fun Sonic Facts!

Sega announced Sonic Advance to the world on January 30, 2001, with a demo video featured at that years Electronic Entertainment Expo in May, and playable versions showcased at both August's Nintendo Space World event and the Tokyo Game Show event in October. Sega would only release Sonic Advance in Japan on December 20, 2001, as it would pass off the brand's overseas presence to THQ for a February 3, 2002 release, and in Europe on March 8, 2002, SEGA would decide that Infogrames, of all companies, would be the ones to handle marketing and distribution.

Sega's investment in Dimps paid off, as the game sold 1.21 million copies in the United States alone, making it one of the bestselling games for the GBA, to the point that the title had earned almost $36 million in sales by August 2006, and by that time it was the 12th highest-selling game for the GBA.

I think the secret final bosses in pretty much all of the DIMPS games are really fun and feel like a fitting grand finale for the respective game. It's a shame that some of them are just not fun to actually access. I think Advance 3, while you need to do the most work, is the most fun out of the Advance games because it encourages you to really explore the levels (but if you don't find that fun, it'll probably slog on instead). Advance 3 in general is my favorite in the Advance series mostly because it really encourages you to play your own way, and it's a nice balance of the platforming in 1 and the speed in 2. I think getting the chaos emeralds becomes more manageable when we hit their DS games when we actually get the concept of depth.

Nah, most people like this game, at least the ones that enjoyed the Genesis games. It's the sequels that tend to get more negative opinions, and I kind of agree with that since they do more of the bad things that you saw pop up in this one occasionally with more frequency. It'll start out fun enough though! Get your R button ready. Ha-ha.

Anyway, that's a very easy final fight once you get used to the fact that you don't have free roam movement like you normally do in the end game Super Sonic space fights. When it's doing the lasers, that's when you can get in a good three or four hits and occasionally get your rings back if you let those actually start flying at Sonic first.

Yeeeeeah. As a matter of fact, I'm going to do you a favor, and post the Sonic Advance 2 manual here. That R-Button control thing Bean mentioned is not something brought up in the game itself, but it's in the manual, and the game just assumes you read the manual. It's not required right away at the beginning of Sonic's run, but towards the end you will need it (as I found out to my chagrin playing it recently), and it's definitely a requirement to gain access to the Special Stages.

I don't know what they were thinking when they made the R button tricks MANDATORY for a segment of Sky Canyon. It's never required anywhere else; how are you supposed to know?? I do think that Advance 2 is the weakest in the series, and while it's still fun, there's quite a few... questionable decisions lmao

But that's only off the end of a ramp or anything that springs you up. You can't do it from a regular jump. That said, it's not very important in a casual run. It's mainly when you're doing a 100% one.

Actually, in the Sonic run, it is important to know, even casually.

Sky Canyon Act 1 basically has two areas that require you to know it, otherwise you will fall in a bottomless pit. That's how I found out.

I'm glad you were mostly happy with Amy, I also had the biggest fun playing as her. I watched a 100% Speedrun of Sonic Advance recently, and the runner also mentions that Amy is the most popular character, and in fact faster than Sonic. Fastest is Tails, followed by Knuckles, so yeah, purely speed-wise, Sonic is the worst.

To be quite fair, there's a lot of glitches performed that skip entire levels, and some are simply easier to do with a character that can stop on a dime, so that's where a lot of Amy's superiority comes from. But that "pure platforming" advantage she has is, in fact, not only welcome for someone who likes pure platforming!

The TAS of Advance 1, meanwhile, is snapped in half no matter who the character is. Highly recommend. It's... not a long run.

Also if we're doing all these chao races then a full playthrough of the heroes missions is locked in baby

We didn't see the debug mode in the classic Sonic games, so we need to go back for those.

supplemental Sonic Advance multiplayer info, mostly from Sonic News Network's wiki:

Collect the Rings is the only mode available in "Single-Game Pak Play". Here, the player who collects the most scattered Ring throughout the separated Neo Green Hill Zone Act within three minutes wins. Each player's location is marked for everyone by colored cursors.
During gameplay, players can attack their opponents to make them drop up to ten of their Rings, which they can then steal. The players can also break Item Boxes with question marks on them to make Spikes appear beneath the opponent.

When playing as three or more players for the multiplayer modes designated to the "Multi-Game Pak Play", players can choose between individual or team play. If "Team Play" is selected, the player can assign themselves in different groups for cooperative gameplay. In such gameplay, each character has special abilities to aid their partners:
  • Sonic: When Sonic is spinning in a place and a teammate touches him from behind, the teammate is instantly propelled into a forward dash.
  • Tails: Tails can pick up his teammate when he is flying and carry them along with him. The teammate can let go by either jumping or waiting until Tails lands.
  • Knuckles: Teammate can ride atop Knuckles' back or head when he is gliding or climbing. The character riding Knuckles falls off when Knuckles stop gliding or jumps while climbing a wall.
  • Amy: If Amy hits her teammate on the ground with her Piko Piko Hammer, she will soar into the air as if she jumped on a Spring.
For races with more than two players, whomever reaches the goal triggers a 60-second timer for everyone else, much like in Sonic 2's 2P mode, only now remaining players still want to reach the goal (to beat other remaining players) instead of changing focus to grabbing rings, item boxes, and defeating enemies (Sonic 2's 2P mode also grades you on those). running out of time results in disqualification (Sonic Advance's multiplayer doesn't use life counters like Sonic 2 did, where running out of lives was the condition for disqualification). For team play, all players much reach the goal for that team to win.

Chao Hunt will have more chao with a higher player count. I don't know the exact details, as I've only played with one other person IIRC

In practice, getting 2 player multi-pak multi player to be hard enough to get started, and having more players is even more unreasonable. This is a problem with multi-pak multi player in all GBA games not called Pokemon or featuring Mario Bros. minigame (which can be played with all 4 Mario Advance titles as well as Superstar Saga).

Pokemon games have sold 35 million copies, titles featuring Mario Bros. minigame have sold 20 million copies. Meanwhile best selling title that isn't one of those is Mario Kart: Super Circuit is with 5 million copies. This means that means your chances of playing multi-pak multi player with other games are pretty minimal without flashcarts.
