Flicky 1 - bird mad girl

A whopping seven years before Sonic was a gleam in the public's eye, an arcade game came out starring a bird that would become one of those animals that pops out of a Badnik. Flicky also had a somewhat bigger role in 3D Blast later down the line.

Rad Mobile - 2 - automobile

Literally the only connection to Sonic in Rad Mobile is that he shows up as a keychain thing before his first game.

The real start of the franchise. Sonic the Hedgehog was designed with the idea of speed as a reward for memorization and skill on replaying levels. It also has plenty of levels that are just slower regardless, though.

Sonic Eraser was a downloadable puzzle game that has no Sonic elements besides the hog himself. Also it sounds crap when you play it.

In what would become something of a tradition for the franchise, Sonic 1 received a version for less powerful systems (usually handhelds) with entirely unique levels.

Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car was a kiddy ride where Sonic is a Japanese policeman, Robotnik is a reckless driver, and the player gets stars based off how well they drive. Don't throw bombs and drive, kids!

Rounding off the Sonic 1 trilogy, Tiger Electronics made an LCD adaptation of Marble Zone. As you can imagine, it isn't very good.

Similarly to its immediate predecessor, Sonic 2 received a unique version for the Game Gear and Master System. This one was actually released first, and has no carryover zones at all! The first boss is gonna suck hard if you're playing it on Game Gear.

Shortly after Sonic 2 for Master System & Game Gear, the 16-bit version was released. This game introduced the Spin Dash, Super Sonic, and Tails as an actually playable character. It also has the first real casino-themed zone!

SegaSonic Bros. was an arcade game that Japan liked so little, it never got a wide release, even there. The goal is to make loops with your weird recolored Sonics. The theme for Blue Sphere is actually from this game!

Sonic the Hedgehog CD is a game featuring a unique time-traveling mechanic, and CD quality music, the contents of which vary by region. Also Amy's first appearance, as well as the decidedly not silver Metal Sonic.

SegaSonic Cosmo Fighter Galaxy Patrol is basically Waku Waku Patrol IN SPACE. And with actual shooting mechanics.

SegaSonic Popcorn Shop - 70 - pop from the top

SegaSonic Popcorn Shop was a piece of interactive software to keep the kiddos entertained while waiting for their popcorn at a machine. You didn't need to play it to get the food, though.

SegaSonic the Hedgehog is the final game in the SegaSonic line, and is the most substantial by a country mile. It's an isometric action game originally controlled by trackball and supports up to three players. First appearance of Mighty, and first and only appearance of Ray for quite some time.

Sonic Chaos was the first Sonic Game for SEGA's 8-bit systems to not be directly tied with a bigger, 16-bit brother. It was the first game where you could actually fly as Tails, and Sonic himself has a powerup that lets him temporarily do the same.

Sonic Spinball was the first out of currently two full-fledged Sonic pinball games. The 16-bit version most people remember was released in November 1993, with the 8-bit one releasing in April the following year. Only game appearances of the SatAM supporting cast, and even then it's just a cameo.

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is a western reskin of Puyo Puyo centered around Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog. Puyo Puyo is an action-puzzle game where the player arranges differently colored slimes in order to make combos and sabotage their opponent by dumping useless slimes on their board.

Sonic Drift was a Japan-only release for the Game Gear until Sonic Adventure DX on the Gamecube. Aside from the sheer novelty of seeing Sonic driving a car, it's a rather standard kart racer.

Sonic the Hedgehog's Gameworld - 106 - lone palm

Sonic the Hedgehog's Gameworld is a collection of minigames. About the only interesting thing about it is its platform, the Sega Pico. It had a touchscreen of sorts and somehow kept getting sold up to 2005. It actually has three Pokemon games available for it!

Sonic Spinball on Master System and Game Gear is mostly a straight, downgraded port, though the first level and final boss are substantially different. The physics are also noticeably different.

Tails and the Music Maker is the second and last of the Sonic Sega Pico games. This one in particular has a music theme, and is the first of three solo games for Tails.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is a strange beast of a game being split in two long before episodic games were common on consoles. The Sonic 3 half was released in the first half of 1994, with Sonic & Knuckles in the second. The latter's cartridge has a unique top loader slot, which allows both games to be played together, as well as other features which we'll go into later. First appearances of Knuckles. Obviously.

Breaking up the Sonic & Knuckles runs of 3&K, we have Sonic's Edusoft, a leaked prototype of an educational game in development during 1991.

As displayed in Hidden Palace Zone, Knuckles can glide through the air and break through certain walls. In addition, he can cling to most others. The only real disadvantages to using him over Sonic are his lower jump height and his inability to have his moveset affected by shields. Finally, in 3 & Knuckles, he has unique paths through levels, a different way to fight one boss, and a final boss all his own.

Sonic 2 & Knuckles - 153 - shades of emerald fields

When locking-on to Sonic 2, you can play as Knuckles in Sonic 2's levels. Probably not canon, but who knows, maybe Robotnik just dared Knuckles to try it at some point.

Sonic 1 & Knuckles - 154 - every which-a-way

When locking onto any other Genesis cartridge (and the total sum of the two games combined is 4MB or less) you can play a special stage as Sonic or Knuckles. Sonic 1 grants you something resembling a campaign, featuring multiple stages and even passwords to save your place.

Much like Sonic Chaos, your playable choices are Sonic & Tails, though Knuckles returns as an antagonist. First appearance of Nack the Weasel/Fang the Sniper. Who is actually part wolf, part jerboa. Go figure!

Knuckles' Chaotix is probably the strangest of the classic-era platformers. You control one of two characters tether together by magical rings in barren mostly vertical levels that get picked from a pool of them. Also, instead of Chaos Emeralds, you're after yet more rings. First appearance of Espio, first official appearance of Vector, first game appearance of Charmy (who originated in a manga.) Last appearance by Mighty for quite some time. Only appearance of Heavy & Bomb to date.

Sonic Crackers - 196 - untitled #1

Sonic Crackers is a Chaotix prototype on the Mega Drive/Genesis starring Sonic and Tails. Has a somewhat different take on what a 3D should be like.

Tails' Skypatrol is a semi-autoscrolling flying game for the Game Gear that never made it overseas for the original system. You restore Tails' stamina by getting mint candies, and he can attack by throwing a ring.

Sonic Labyrinth is a maze/grab the keys game where sonic is either moving at an uncharacteristically slow pace while walking or nigh-uncontrollably fast while Spin Dashing. It ain't great.

Mountain Quest is a mechanical toy game thing.

Sonic X-TREME [prototype] - 220 - blue jade

Sonic X-TREME is a cancelled 3D game that was eventually canned after years and years of development hell. This is an edited prototype of it.

Sonic the Fighters - 221 - dødsferd

Sonic the Fighters, also known as Sonic Championship, was a polygonal fighting game released in arcades. First and only game appearances of Bark and Bean for quite a while. Last game appearance of Fang, for ages, too. A scrapped adaptation of a Fighting Vipers character named Honey would be added back in as a special character in later home ports.

Sonic's Schoolhouse is a mediocre edutainment game for young children on PC. It's best known for the strange voice they gave Sonic and the horrifying player avatars.

Sonic 3D Blast was an action game for the Genesis/Mega Drive, Saturn, & PC. As the name implies it had some degree of 3D elements, thought most of that was the spritework. The soundtrack differs depending on platform.

Sonic Blast with no 3D is a crappy, short 2D platformer starring Sonic & Knuckles for the Game Gear. Brazil got it on a home system, the poor dears.

Sonic and Knuckles Collection (pc) - 245 - angel rebellion

Sonic 3 & Knuckles got a PC port, and this is a quick look at it with Tails. It features a few different songs from the Genesis/Mega Drive version that were, up until the discovery of a prototype for the console version in late 2019, believed to have been composed specifically for it.

Sonic Jam for the Sega Saturn was a port of the primary Genesis quadriology (including 2&K, 3&K, and Blue Sphere) surrounded in bonus features such as easy modes, animations, an art gallery, and a 3D platformer minigame called Sonic World, which contained many of the aforementioned bonuses.

Sonic Adventure was the series' first deep dip into the third dimension. Though at its core it's a 3D platformer, every playable character (of which there are six) puts their own little spin on things. Not every character fights the same bosses, visiting the same stages at the same time is rare, and the game even features full voice acting! Oh, and Sonic has green eyes now. Yep.

Also not returning are hubs, hammer, and fishing gameplay. In addition, shooting stages are slower-paced and no longer time-based, and the radar in the hunting stages have been nerfed. Sonic Advance is the first in a trilogy and side game for the Game Boy Advance. Because of this, it's one of the first two Sonic games on Nintendo hardware! The game itself is made by some of the same people as Sonic Pocket Adventure, now moved to the company Dimps (a name that will become very familiar for a good while from this point forward). In some ways, it serves as a kind of remake of Pocket Adventure. Playable characters are Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy.

Sonic Advance 2 is the sequel to Sonic Advance, and out of the trilogy, it's the closest to the boost formula latered used in Sonic Rush. It's also the most polarizing, largely due to the Special Stage method being finding seven objects in stages that really weren't made for exploration. First real game appearnce of Cream, Mega Collection previews and Adventure DX retcons notwithstanding.

Super Hard: Sonic Heroes is the one with twelve playable characters spread evenly into four team campaigns, with the addition of a bonus campagain that's a pain in the butt to unlock. Next up in "The Sonic LP That Wouldn't Die" is Sonic Unleashed! Specifically, the version developed for SD consoles. Both major takes on the title introduced the Boost from the Rush games into the mainline, and started the long trend of only Sonic being the playable character. Both takes have the maligned Werehog playstyle. The SD one is pared down in more ways than just graphics, though. It's missing fully featured hubs, an optional country was removed entirely, and one country was reduced to just being a boss stage.

Somebody mentioned on the Mega Man thread about raocow possibly having trouble with the Wii games. Funny enough, Dolphin recently had an update to improve Wii Remote connectivity. All raocow would need is a normal Bluetooth adapter for his PC and he'd be able to connect a Wii Remote, and even a MotionPlus. (Although that's not necessary in this case.)

Now for a bit of fun trivia...

The Wii Remote keeps all of it's sensors inside the remote itself. The Sensor Bar is actually a misnomer, in that it doesn't actually have any sensors in it at all. It's merely a pair of infrared lights that the remote is able to detect. It uses the spacing of the two lights to determine it's location in comparison, and sends that data to the system. While you can buy a "DolphinBar", a Sensor Bar that connects to your PC, this also means that you can get it working by simply taking two small candles, lighting them, and placing them the correct distance away from each other to emulate having a Sensor Bar connected.

So, raocow shouldn't have any issues at all until he hits the PS3/XBox console to play Sonic '06 and Unleashed. While I know that mods shouldn't count on this list, I do think that it would be fun to have a video or two where he has fun with some of the various mods for Generations. Unleashed Project is a blast to play, and I'll bet anything that the Sonic '06 Project will either be done by then, or have an updated demo release. As odd as it sounds, it works surprisingly well in the Generations engine.

Oh yeah, out of curiosity, is it going to be a goal to get all of the Emeralds in each game, or not? Sonic 2 has a glitch to allow getting all of them in the first level, and Sonic 3&K as well as Mania gives you a level select so you can farm an easy-to-reach Special Stage. Or we could just give raocow a save-state for the games where they're too much of a hassle so he can play the final boss fights.

Dolphin 5.0 has support for the legacy feature "Hybrid Wiimote," which lets you use the real wiimote for everything but also use the mouse as the pointer. That's what I did for Super Paper Mario, since I can't even be bothered to set up some IR LEDs or candles or mod a sensor bar to use USB.

Act 1 has only 3 checkpoints, but Act 2 has 5, so you actually get a slight margin of error if you route it properly

on the other hand, Super Sonic in 2 is a double-edged sword considering how many places you can softlock yourself with it if not outright crash the game

While you're absolutely right it's totally possible to get them all legitimately in Emerald Hill, I think he's talking about the reset trick - resetting the console lets you restart and keep Emerald progress, so you can collect them all using the very first post if you're stubborn. That's the only way to get Super Sonic in EHZ1.

i can't tell if that's just a direct joke based on koba's word choice or a "hehe sonic fans have fetishes" joke, because the internet is so saturated with the latter whenever sonic comes up that it's enough to make anything similar to it come off in bad faith

it really feels like everyone is all about leaning into scapegoating the sonic fandom as social outcasts and the scene of gross activity that it makes me feel like i can't go anywhere and talk about sonic and not have... that follow

my apologies if i'm reading the wrong tone here, but you have to understand that this is really prevalent everywhere else

So is this actually happening? I remember in the COMING UP NEXT topic that All the Sonics was originally announced there, but then not long after it was edited and changed to 'change of plans! See you after Magaman'


So I wonder what Sonic games won't be covered, since rao didn't do the core Megaman.exe games, and Megaman Legends. Just the 2D platforming games.

i dont like talking about liking the older sonic games in public because of this actually lol

as an aside: (spoilered because it veers into sex ed territory and kids might be on these forums + some people are sex repulsed)
acting like having non-problematic fetishes is a bad thing is also really dumb.

like i know we joke a lot about kinkshaming and whatnot on the internetsphere (i do too) but acting like people are horrible human beings for having harmless*, if unconventional tastes on what turns them on outside of "ooga booga big boobe and big ass" is pretty shit, especially since a lot of the people more open about that tend to be queer (see: the furry fandom, where acting like they're all sexual deviants who will molest your pets is basically entry level lgbtqphobia at this point due to a majority of the fandom being queer in some way)

My sincerest apologies. In my ignorance, I forgot 'bout Poe's Law & didn't realize that a complete stranger like me very well may be moronic 'nough to find a Sonic Let's Play forum to be a brilliant place to set up my soapbox on the vital issue o' vomit fetishes. 'Specially since it's such an obviously arbitrary & made-up stereotype. That's like saying, “Those Portuguese — ¡they sure love to brush their teeth with purple toothbrushes!”.

Also, I always thought these stereotypes only held for fans o' the newer games with their sexy panty shots o' hedgehogs empinkened by radiation poisoning ( not that there's anything wrong with that ) or sexy hedgehog-human pairings ( not that there's anything wrong — well, if the hedgehog has humanlike free will, I s'pose ). ¿Are there truly people who are like, “I don't know... The way Sonic taps his foot in Sonic 1 is way too sexually suggesting”?

As a big Donkey Kong Country fan, I will agree that this is unfair, since those games have been sexing up the female kongs since the beginning, & nobody assumes that liking Donkey Kong Country means I want to stick my dong in the dong kong, e'en though it is 100% true.

On less invigorating topics, ¿when raocow does Sonic 3D Blast, the best Sonic game, is he going to stick with the original for the authentic experience, or the Director's Cut recently released by the former director o' Traveller's Tales?

I always thought Amy & Cream panty shots and Rouge cleavage were fucking gross like don't put Horny in a children's video game

I get that with Elise they were trying to recreate Madonna from the Sonic 1 early stages but like a Roger Rabbit-style human-funny animal relationship doesn't work if you take it seriously and realistically, it just looks creepy and unsettling

i'm really disgusted by the tone and subject matter of this whole thing, and this is why i was uncomfortable with your initial post and wanted to say anything to begin with. i don't want to post in or read this thread if people are going to post things like this; this is frustrating, because the sonic franchise means a lot to me and i want to feel comfortable discussing this lp as it happens.
