Re: All The S@nics - Advance - Rebuild Of Pocket Adventure
Ah, there it is, the rudeness I know this game for. It's like coming back home after a long trip.
Analyzing Sonic Advance has always been a bit tricky for me. For one, the physics are good, and the set-pieces are fun. The level design is mostly competent, too. There's something that goes into it not reaching the same heights at Sonic 2/3&K's fun-ness, though. Fluidity might be one such reasons. I also think it's a lot more difficult to map out these levels in your head, too. Things aren't really constructed in a way that shows their spacial relationship to one another, so it sometimes feels like level pieces are just floating abstract from one another. Kinda disorienting, really.

a nice, very intentional feature of sonic genesis level design is a lack of bottomless pits. if there's a drop down, and you don't see spikes, it is a route you can take; actual further level geometry. it just may be a less exciting path, to reward flawless gameplay. in fact, the single only inescapable pit in any genesis game, quite possibly created by mistake, is explicitly named and scorned by the sonic fanbase.

Re: All The S@nics - Advance - Rebuild Of Pocket Adventure
between pocket adventure and this I dunno if this divisions between "classic" and current eras of sonic actually exists guys
Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

I mean, my mind goes straight to Wing Fortress Zone in Sonic 2, when you're under the ship jumping on platforms and hanging on rail things....pretty confident a fall there is death.Reecer7 wrote: ↑3 years ago a nice, very intentional feature of sonic genesis level design is a lack of bottomless pits. if there's a drop down, and you don't see spikes, it is a route you can take; actual further level geometry. it just may be a less exciting path, to reward flawless gameplay. in fact, the single only inescapable pit in any genesis game, quite possibly created by mistake, is explicitly named and scorned by the sonic fanbase.
The only reason that pit in Mystic Cave Zone is so bad is because it's very very possible to get there as Super Sonic and with a ton of rings....at which point you have to just wait. Can't get out, can't rush death, just gotta sit there and wait to slowly burn out those rings and finally die. May only take a minute or two, but that feels like an eternity when you're just...sitting there.

you guys sure turned on this game quick
but yes, act 2 has moments of really poor construction

Re: All The S@nics - Advance - Rebuild Of Pocket Adventure
This stage sucks but the game overall is really good.
With some of these springs that send you into abysses, I feel like DIMPS was relying a little too much on the players always pushing their character in the direction of the level's flow, whereas someone like raocow who tends to be rather careful (makes sense in Mario) hesitates. I'm somewhat sure that if you keep pushing in the direction where the spring sends you, you'll end up on the offending platform...most of the time.
Of course, in other Sonics if you don't let the spring do exactly what it wants to do, you'll die as well, so there's no winning strategy here.

I like the segment at 10:45 where you're climbing up a shaft on those slow wheels and at the very top there's a spike trap in the perfect place to knock you all the way back down
and then a few steps to the right offscreen there's a spring there to launch you backwards into the trap after you're past it

Re: All The S@nics - Advance - Rebuild Of Pocket Adventure
"We got a robot Knuckles before we got a robot Tails"
This got me thinking, does Tails Doll even count as a robot?
I did some digging, and the Tails Doll isn't really a robot so much as a literal toy poked in the head with a power source, and has an unknown method of locomotion beyond It Floats Somehow.
https://sonic.fandom.com/wiki/Tails_Doll#Profile
While I'm questioning the use of the words "power plant", and think maybe "power source" would be more appropriate, I'm not a translator, I don't know, and in the end it really doesn't matter. Whether it has a uranium rod in its forehead or a literal power plant has been placed in an extradimensional space in the object, fact is that the machine itself is merely a powered floating device contained in its head, and the doll itself is otherwise just a stuffed toy. Not really the same as a "Robot Tails".
However, we DID get a true mecha knuckles back in Sonic R too, so hey.

Which is a better translation of this page than google will do, it seems: https://translate.google.com/translate? ... chara.html"This, except for the power plant embedded in its head, is a mere stuffed animal"
"he has a strange floating ability [...] allowing him to remain airborne longer than Tails can."

I looked the kanji up, and used DeepL, and it gave me power unit, or power device- I guess power source would be accurate. I think it just means like a, uh, battery or something like that. Although, it's basically been accepted by everyone the thing is possesed and that's how it moves lol

Re: All The S@nics - Advance - Rebuild Of Pocket Adventure
it's 2 AM and i refuse to sleep here's what raocow's path through egg rocket looks like, by way of drawing a line over the level map then hiding the level map. this also removes looping/backtracking that isn't necessary just for the sake of my sanity
egg rocket is long

Re: All The S@nics - Advance - Rebuild Of Pocket Adventure
This level is super scary and very rude the first time around, but on replay it turns into one the best in the game, imo. As raocow already noticed, once you know what you're doing it can go blindingly fast, and the various setups it presents are super cool to figure out and then just blast through. For a vertical level with only one way to go (up), it also offers a lot of different paths. Very well done once you get over the fact that yes, if you don't commit with full confidence, the springs and other devices are Not Your Friends.

Re: All The S@nics - Advance - Rebuild Of Pocket Adventure
this is oddly satisfying to look at. I kinda wanna add grey horizontal lines for the subsections that fall away.
Re: All The S@nics - Advance - Rebuild Of Pocket Adventure
The two parts I don't like in this stage are that one conveyor belt with the moving spring deal right on a bottomless pit in the outdoor area. Thankfully, that can be cheesed by hopping up and spin dashing left, up, and around that trouble. The other part is that one spring that leads you into the spikes if you don't spin dash or get just the right angle on it. Definitely has a lot of gotcha enemies, too, like the laser dudes or silver crystals that open up.
Even with the flaws, I do like the stage more than I don't. I guess I can tolerate some cheapness when you get to the late game like this. Remember this stage taking forever to do right when recording it years ago.

More seriously, raocow's apparent strategy of holding backwards on springs like a frightened child continues to backfire.

Re: All The S@nics - Advance - Rebuild Of Pocket Adventure
It's not my favorite "final level" theme in the trilogy (that's SA3), but it's solid enough that I immediately remembered it and was like "aw yeah this one!".
Also I'm a day late on this but Egg Rocket's theme has huge Sigma 1 vibes, doesn't it

Re: All The S@nics - Advance - Rebuild Of Pocket Adventure
I like the versions of the 1 and 2 boss themes.
The regular final boss is clunky and the best way to beat it is to abuse invincibility and hope you get lucky.
That's what I have to say about this video.

I think you can duck the laser and just wait for when it's switching sides or going for the grab attack to get your hits in, but it's been about ten years since I played this one.
And yes, Sonic Advance was a success for Sega and Dimps. It was one of the highest-selling third party games on the GBA at around 1.5 million copies sold worldwide. Some collections, licensed games, and the one Kingdom Hearts thing did better, but both Sonic Advance and Adventure 2: Battle definitely helped put Sonic back on the right track for a bit again.
