Re: One Or Two Silvanas - Mean Bean For 8 Bit Machines - Beanie Baby
Fun Sonic Facts!
The Game Gear version of Mean Bean Machine is a total retooling of the Japan-only Puyo game, Nazo Puyo, famous for being exclusively released as a pack-in title for specially marked Game Gears. (So you'd be spending about ¥15,800 to purchase one) However, Mean Bean Machine has a much more expanded Puzzle Mode than Nazo Puyo, a feature not found in the Mega Drive version.

This looks really awkward as puzzle modes go. Then again, I guess there weren't a lot of examples to build on back in those days.
The thing that's weird is that it basically just plays like normal Puyo Puyo (minus the opponent dumping garbage tiles on you) if you don't get the goal right away. Most puzzle modes I've seen are more of "limited moves", or in the case of Tetris 2, "limited pieces dropping". So if you mess up, you just get a failure message quickly.
This seems more like an awkward hybrid of a puzzle mode and tutorial mode. Early on, at least, they have nice convenient setups for you to get the goal quickly, which can help you in learning to recognize combo opportunities (if not necessarily with actively setting them up). But failing to make use of those opportunities just means "flail about trying to reconstruct the outcome that convenient setup could have given you", which is kind of weird.

Surprisingly, the later lessons are actually legitimately difficult. I'm glad he's not going through all of them because they get very difficult to the point where I had to look up solutions for them.

I love how raocow's mind went to "clear the board three times" before "do a 3-chain"

Re: One Or Two Silvanas - Mean Bean For 8 Bit Machines - Beanie Baby
It was interesting seeing that this version of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine has a puzzle mode, although I feel like it would have been better if it just gave you fixed pieces instead of you having to wait for the right pieces.
Anyway, watching raocow play through the other version of this seems to have made me better at Puyo Puyo. I tried out the second Puyo Puyo game when it was released as part of the Nintendo Switch Online thing, and I actually managed to beat it with just two continues, although the new mechanics (like countering and being able to rotate pieces in narrow columns) certainly helped. I don't foresee raocow playing anymore Puyo Puyo games in the near future so I figured I'd mention this now while it's relevant.

I think it was a mistake not to make use of the rare opportunity to play as Robotnik here.

those games that are like "instead of having a hud overlaid we're gonna chunk off half the screen for it and scrunch the game game into the other half" are so funny to me

Fun Sonic Facts!
Sonic Drift is the first 8-bit Sonic game to be released exclusively for Sega Game Gear without a separate port for the Sega Master System. It is also the first Sonic the Hedgehog console/handheld game release to remain originally exclusive to Japan, with the only official western access through rerelease compilations like Sonic Mega Collection Plus.

Just realized that if we're doing "full" playthroughs of racing games, Sonic Riders is gonna be a thing.
I like Sonic Riders but it is *not* for everyone......

Doesn't that need the use of a Kinect? How would that even work? :/

That's Sonic Free Riders, the third in the Riders trilogy of Sonic racing games. That could be a hilarious emulation Sanic episode.

I enjoyed the first one when I was like, 12, but it has a real steep learning curve yeahhh

Riders 1 and Zero Gravity are both available on PS2
I actually like Zero Gravity. Can't say much about the original since i've barely played it, but i'm looking forward to them in this series!

It's just better to asume that every game released from march 2000 to 2009 has a PS2 port, to be fair.

Doesn't FIFA still have official PS2 releases even these days?

Poor Amy... this playthrough she doesn't get the guy, OR the flag sprites! So, assuming that each GP course counts as an act...
All The Hill Zones tally:
Don't have too much to say about Sonic Drift so I put off my list additions. Drift looked neat, and I like Sonic's Shoe Car, but even impressive as it is to fake 3D with the stripey scanline shifty thing, I never cared for this kind of 8-bit racer. I do like how every character has an ending with their own cutscene sprites and everything!
All The Hill Zones tally:
- 5 Green Hill Zones
- 15 Green Hill Zone Acts total
- 3 versions of the Nakamura GHZ theme
- 7 versions of JP/EU Sonic CD's "You Can Do Anything" theme*
- 7 (some kinda) Hill Zones total
- 20 (some kinda) Hill Zone Acts total
- 1 misc Hill-Type Zone(the Hill Top clause)
