Honestly the elaborate artwork and effects on modern slot machines are more entertaining (and less anxiety inducing) then the actual gambling part.

Anyway I went because one of my friends wanted to see what a casino was like and invited a bunch of people along. After losing fifteen bucks to the slots, she declared that she will never enter a casino again, launch a personal war on all gambling in the country, and become a nun, so I don't think we're heading back anytime soon.

The moral of the story is you don't need to spend money to have fun.
Casinos can be neat, but don't get greedy!

Made something like $500+ playing a three-card poker variant I can't really remember the name of the last time I was in a casino. Woke up the next morning to try my luck (was at a friend's company Christmas party at said casino/hotel) and ended up losing about $45 of it. Lesson learned, haven't been to one since!
Also probably helps that I live in a state that the nearest casino is like 100 miles or so away though I don't really know because I'm not really interested in gambling. I'd rather make money other easier ways that involve being actually creative.

That boss is pretty similar to the Hydro City mid-boss, but without the crazy washing machine mechanic.

I totally don't remember if the Casino zone in Sonic Advance 1 has a slot game like that but it really should've. Was more like Carvinal Night or something. I should play through Advance 1 again since it's pretty decent from what I remember

Uhm... couldn't you have tried for the 4th Emerald, then backtrack to collect some rings?

Oh well, good job on two jackpots!

Fun Sonic Facts!

Just like in Sonic 1, Masato Nakamura, leader of the band Dreams Come True, was in charge of the soundtrack to Sonic 2. Wanting to stay faithful to the style of the first game, but still improve upon it, Nakamura spent many a sleepless night writing music that would satisfy fans. However, he greatly enjoyed such a test of his skill, to the point that once the game released to raucous praise, Nakamura decided to give the team that had gifted him such a fulfilling challenge something nice.

ONe Day, Yuji Naka was surprised to receive a fax from Nakamura saying "I've got a present for you. It's a surprise!" Passing it around the office, most of Sonic Team tried to figure out what it might be, but not a soul managed to guess that Nakamura had taken the ending theme and transformed it into a song titled "SWEET SWEET SWEET" for the DREAMS COME TRUE album that he worked on in London. The team was ecstatic upon learning what their "present" truly was, and for many was a perfect capstone to their memories of the project.

Let's do some comparisons of game structure thus far!

Sonic 1:
7 zones
3 acts each (except for Final Zone)
19 acts total

Sonic 1 8-bit:
6 zones
3 acts each
18 acts total

Sonic 2 8-bit:
7 zones
3 acts each
21 acts total
Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

Casino Night Zone, the second of the three zones in Sonic 2 to have a multiplayer mode and accompanying song!

Since we're sharing casino stories, the first time I went to one, right as I became of legal gambling age, I went in with 20 bucks and came out with 40, figuring I was smart to stop the moment I won more than I entered with. It left me with a weird sense of luck that screwed me over in a few games.

I'm not sure if I'm glad or sad you didn't get triple Eggman on the slots.

Fun Sonic Facts!

Hill Top Zone was originally meant to be the 'Past' version of Emerald Hill Zone early in development when Time Travel was still going to be part of Sonic 2, and thus was populated with dinosaurs and huge volcanoes to evoke an 'ancient' feeling. However, this was dropped later on in development once the decision was made to place the zone amongst the high peaks of West Side Island. It's also one of the only Zones visible from another Zone; it is partly visible from Emerald Hill Zone, specifically the dizzying heights of Hill Top's background can be glimpsed on the horizon at the far right of the first act of Emerald Hill.

Something about Hill Top Zone always appealed to me, maybe it was the color scheme? Maybe the fact it's half a recolor of the first zone stuck out to me?

I don't seem to be the only one who liked the aesthetic. Popular fan game "Sonic: Before the Sequel", which I had blanked out on mentioning before you played the titular Sequel(Sonic 2), starts off with "Hilltop Heights", which definitely takes some nods from Hill Top Zone's style on the lower segments. One of the composers for that fan game actually later helped out with the more official Sonic Mania, handling the mixing/mastering of the music, and I believe composing at least one song in the DLC.

As someone who doesn't play any Diablos, I found today's Diablo reference rather lackadaisical.

When me and my brother were real real little, we called this level "the crying level", 'cause the opening few notes of the music kinda sounded like a cry to us. Good times.

I remember this level very well because it's the farthest I ever got in Sonic 2 as a kid, so everything after it was a great mystery to me. I think it has a lot more personality than Starlight Zone, by virtue of being both a lava level and a grassy mountain level, which seemed like a wild combination to me as someone who played a lot of Mario.

Yeah I do think Hilltop has personality. Partially it's the music, partially it's the repurposing of sonic 1-1 aesthetics in a level that isn't sonic 1-1 design, which ends up coming off as iconic to me (almost reminds me of Marble Zone even though the design is nothing like it).

due to how the genesis does graphics, on a crt or something they'd blend for some funky semitransparent effect
similarly iirc some place said they designed the waterfalls thinking of doing it in a way the graphics rendering would leave rainbow artifacts

Did a cursory check to see if there happened to be any videos of someone playing Sonic 2 on a CRT, and I found stuff and it looked the sameish to me. Maybe it's something that i'd have to see in person, making this nearly impossible due to what is required.

Hill Top Zone doesn't get a 2P version, probably because of the weird Layer 2-style lava stuff or how it could risk locking one player into the lava filled areas. At least you found a new Special Stage? They can be played competitively with another player too, with Sonic and Tails swapping front/back depending on who jumped when, but these don't get a new song unlike the other VS stages.

Another fun fact about Hill Top Zone, the long necked dino enemy(Rexon) has a chance of causing the game to CRASH when you kill it! I couldn't find anything about the in-game conditions that cause it, just that hackers know how to fix it. I was nervous every time you got near one, even if it's probably a small small chance.

Oh, I found a good example of the CRT effect that was being talked about from Sonic CD's Special Stage. Notice the waterfalls and clouds on the island thingy in the background... that plant has a similar checker effect, so it could end up looking see-through or otherwise funky and neat. Then again, the holes in the plant aren't a 1x1 pixel effect, the gaps are two pixels wide/two pixels tall, so I'm not sure how that might work with the CRT stuff.
