SUPER - Mario and Detteiu's Trap Tower

Preface
Okay, so true story.

There once was this guy, this weird gross furry, who liked lions a lot. He was wandering through the database of this guy, Zandro, I believe his name was? He was going through Zandro's database, specifically the Japanese section. He runs into this weird hack called "SUPER". "SUPER, what the fuck kinda name is that?" but then ya boy notices that it was made by somewhat known Japanese romhacker wagokoro, also known as wa_. So naturally he's like "Wait, Wagokoro made a hack?" and he downloads the hack. Upon witnessing the galaxy brained nonsense going on with the hack, the dude's like "Yo, I gotta Tell People about this.", so he went to translate it to the best of his abilities.

And people played it.

They knew not what past sins they've reaped that were best left forgotten.

Fast forward to today, a much better translation has been done by someone who is actually fluent at speaking Japanese, with the help of two good boys online.

Oh yeah btw, that furry? That was me. I'm sorry for this LP even happening.

Actual Intro
SUPER is a comedic, very hard, at times kaizo-light, hack made by Wagokoro in like the early 2010s? Its entire design ethos is basically "what is the funniest, stupidest gimmick slash mechanic slash enemy slash concept for a stage and how can I make it hinder the player".

Stage 1? Hammer Bros in cramped hallways. Stage 2? Bullet Bills that swerve to hit Mario when he's underneath them and ones that explode when they hit something. Yellow Switch? A fake out P-Switch puzzle. Stage 3? A waste treatment facility with crumbling, rotting floor followed by blocks full of trash you have to incinerate to make your way through. (rao if you spoil yourself any of these I will Find You)

It's the kind of hack that a lot of aspiring hackers would do good to take inspiration from in their own endeavors (they don't need to make trap stages like this one though).

It was basically lost forever until Zandro got a hold of it somehow, probably through fullsets. I think it was posted in Kaizou Mario Uploader X? Next time you act like pirating from Nintendo should be made a felony, think about what ROMs have done for you in your day to day basis.

Compare it to say, Hyper Mari World 6 (Hyper VI, if you'd rather) and its player-hostile level design. While in Hyper it was a case of Haimari not having a very good grasp on what makes game design work outside of "How do I punish the player the hardest", SUPER essentially turns Mario into a series of gotcha traps that are actually well designed, clever and quite funny, all in a Mario context. It's assholish and rude, but it's a fun assholish and rude.

It's also much shorter, three levels a world, sometimes a switch, for like 7 worlds.

The dialogue is necessary for the brunt of the humor (and understanding how stuff works), so a translation was needed either way. I hope you all enjoy this hot mess, and I hope Samuel has fun self-flagellating himself with this masterpiece. Just don't forget!

The strong have no need for mere pause buttons.

This has no "press left or face left = die" bullshit level ASM so you might have to riot

There is Elite Koopas being used as the boss of a stage (as they should), those spinny platforms from smb3 and a really bad lava cave, that's the worst this game gets

Probably, given that there aren't any other Japanese hacks on Zandros's archive that are just called "SUPER". Also, that post was made right around the time the hack first got released... Kind of funny that raocow wanted to give it a try even back then!

I think the difficulty should stay on a level that's possible for raocow to complete. The main thing about it is that there are levels which are

unreasonably long and heavily focus on endurance. Oftentimes you beat a level wondering "So, why didn't this have a midway point?", which isn't the type of difficulty a lot of people find very fun to play.

On the other hand, the good news about this is that

raocow can just give himself an extra checkpoint at a screen transition and still have a really good time with the level itself.



I suppose we'll see how things go as we go along. That first episode was already a lot of fun! I can't believe he didn't fall for the double fake-out kaizo trap

Looks really funny and interesting.
Keeping this hack short-ish sounds smart.
While it has the potential to turn unfair and unfun, I trust you guys wouldn't recommend such things.

Yep. Also Luigi of Shadow is absolutely awful please do not give that game your time of day the first world is literally just flat ground

CM30 is off his rocker if he thinks Luigi of Shadow is anything above abysmal but Super is stale just because the ASM follows traditional game mechanic conventions instead of how they're used in level design and points to the lack of ~epic custom bosses~ as a negative.

And disclaimer: I like Seven Koopalings, Julius, Tanasinn and VIP5 Ludwig. If you make a good custom boss in SMW, I will applaud you. Even more so if your code works properly on bsnes and console, which is something that can't be said for Julius and most likely 7Koop.

I'd post screencaps but
1) I don't want to inadvertently reveal VIP5 progress since i'm not sure Eye n crew are okay with that
2) I don't want to "leak" future raocow lps, one of them Will Be Controversial and it is 100% raocow's idea and he wants to keep it secret

I am waiting and hoping for that yellow switch to make one level very difficult. Bonus points if it would've been a complete cakewalk without it activated. I love a good long con.

Don't get too excited about the notes on the OW, cause that's the only one we put in. There's actually another reference in this hack that we were total idiots and missed, resulting in a very slight mistranslation I guess. I'll be pointing that one out as it comes up, but I think most people who have some video games experience will be catching it anyway (like I said we (especially me) were idiots).
