Hot Take: Minecart levels only got good when DKC2 came along, which was also when they peaked????

I legitimately don't understand the hate for the level. What exactly is so bad about it?
Same here. That's my favorite level in the entire game.FourteenthOrder wrote: ↑5 years agoThe minecart levels are super fun and I have never understood the hate for them at all.

Re: Re: Sticky: LP Subforum Thread 999
It's a difficulty spike for this early in the game, and it's also reaction-based with obstacles coming at you way too fast rather than being a normal platformer level with normal enemies you can study and adjust to. That's why I don't like it at least.

Re: Re: Sticky: LP Subforum Thread 999
The jump arc on the minecart is wet garbage in a heatwave
Re: Re: Sticky: LP Subforum Thread 999
You push the jump button at the right time
or you die instantly (yes I realize the crocs "only" hurt you, but there's almost no DK barrels)
Redo a lengthy autoscroller for ever tiny timing mistake you made
fun fun fun
The minecart levels in DKC2 are indeed the way to do them right. Almost no instant death, you have plenty of things to jump at/avoid regardless, the timing to react to obstacles is way more generous than here, and their respective gimmicks make each unique and varied.

Re: Re: Sticky: LP Subforum Thread 999
With the exception of two jumps, the level is trivially easy though. The only difficult jumps are the one around the midpoint where you're going uphill and need to make a fairly long jump then the one near the end where there's three overturned minecarts with the middle one being on a small sunken section.
I'll agree on this, however. The rollercoaster levels (and DKC3's toboggan levels) are far superior to the minecart ones. The minecart levels in DKC2 are indeed the way to do them right. Re: Re: Sticky: LP Subforum Thread 999
I disagree about the DKC3 toboggan levels (I feel like they are far worse than this level, and the only few things about DKC3 that are truly clumsy desing-wise.)
honestly not much to say about this level[citation needed]. The expected reaction time is far too quick for most people to be able to deal with. At least the level has sufficiently striking landmarks to help commit it to memory; but even that could have been done a lot better.
Otherwise it's the most basic Minecart level in the entire series; fittingly, as it's the very first one.

- Floating over the Warp Barrel in Mine Cart Carnage
The GBA port actually added a whole bunch of Warp Barrels, too! There's now one in every level of the first two worlds, and none after. This is how it's handled in the games from 2 onward, too.
...i might have actually not known this until i did my research so i was wondering why rao never mentioned warp barrels until today but actually im the fool
Incidentally, all this minecart talk makes me want to replay DKC Returns. That game was crazy good.

I like how some GBA games, like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, got around this by having multiple graphics modes.
Also, i've never been interested in the DKC games, although they're probably fun in their own right, but the minecart levels are just
Re: Re: Sticky: LP Subforum Thread 999
The problem with the minecart level is simple - you don't really know when you're supposed to jump.FourteenthOrder wrote: ↑5 years ago The minecart levels are super fun and I have never understood the hate for them at all.
This is a problem with DKC's graphical style. It's clear to your eye where the track ends but you don't know where the collision ends. Even now I don't think I could tell you. How far along the rail do you have to be before you fall off? Jump too early and you won't make it. And there's spots where you have to jump immediately upon landing, or worst of all, jump off a rail going uphill. Gotta hold the button down in the right ways too because height is pressure-sensitive like the rest of the game. Its very wonky, especially when you're 7 years old and your only experience with platforming games is SMW.
I mean I like them too, but I like them more in DKC Returns where they ironed these issues out.

Re: Re: Sticky: LP Subforum Thread 999
I found Returns worse with the mine cart levels. The original Donkey Kong Country's mine cart levels are straightforward in how you beat them: you just need to time the jump button till just before the obstacles. Returns has outright trial-and-error challenges. For instance, "Bombs Away" has a part where you think you can jump just before a hole, only for a mole to throw a bomb at the track after it just then, creating a hole that you'll fall in. You need to jump earlier so you land on the track after the 1st hole earlier, giving you enough time to jump the 2nd hole.

Rockcroc was originally Krocrock but they changed it for whatever reason.
You can also kill them when curled up with the hand slap in the Japanese version and the GBA version.
Fun Fact: The different languages in the European and Japanese releases also have different names for each level! I think foreign language names for Mario levels are always really cool.
Fun Fact #2: A group of apes is a troop.
Klump and Krusha are cute......................

I know it's a good laugh but can we get the title of the thread changed to something that actually suggests this might be the DKC thread now? It's a bit silly at this point.

Hmm, somebody beat me to the troop info. Anyway, Stop and Go Station was my wall as a kid, not the minecart. Intimidation had a lot to do with it. Those enemies were scary and invincible!
