Re: ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ - Aaaaa A Aaaa AA Aaa AAA Aa AAAAAA Reckless Disregard For Instinct - 4
So I had no part in making this hack whatsoever (even though I am a contributor to jump 1/2). In fact, I didn't even know it existed until it showed up on SMWC one day. This hack is an absolute blast and a fantastic display of creativity. Mice is the JUMP 1/2 team's most "mechanical" project, significantly moreso than both jump 1/2 and yump. Some might reason that it's the lack of lolyoshi levels , but I think the main reason is that the very nature of the hack almost encourages puzzle-platforming. Because of this, some players may find the levels to lack replay-ability, and others might get annoyed at the precise and puzzly nature of the design (there's no so called "romps" to be found here). However, this hack appeals to a lot of different players regardless, and like Mandew, I respect how the hack sticks to its design style throughout.
Each level exploits a C3 resource to its fullest extent; as evident in Lazy's post, the authors took sprites, often with wonky ASM, and created something creative and magical out of them. This almost yump-like exploitation allows for some hilarious and very inspired setups. Throughout this adventure, we see the poorly coded noses of pointy-bugs used as stepping stools, or a simple projectile powerup become a pong-inspired puzzler. A boomerang suit is donned, not to massacre enemies in a romp, but to solve highly intricate puzzles. Resources are used in ways that subvert player expectations; the intended use of the sprites are entirely discarded, and brand new gimmicks are devised. But the really great part about this hack is how each author allowed the C3 resource to truly shine. Each resource is used so earnestly. Even the poorly coded sprites are used with such sincerity and dedication to the resource that one might think they were coded by the level authors themselves. That's probably one of the reasons why I really like this hack.
The biggest issue with the hack is that it is rushed in places, but Mice is still incredibly impressive for a hack made in such a short amount of time. The aesthetics are really nice and the music choices are amazing (we all got lucky with these; don't forget, these are all C3 resources as well!). Even the overworld is a C3 resource (idk if that was already mentioned lol).
Overall, this project is hugely different from the original jump, yump, and jump 1/2. It has its own unique style though. I like how it isn't just "JUMP except it used C3 graphics and sprites". Instead, it has its own cool identity. It was pretty fun playing the hack blind and not being involved in its production, and it was fun guessing who made each level (even though I usually guessed wrong). Also, nice hack name

And somehow raocow has less trouble with a morsel!morceau level than a worldpeace level. (still mad about yesterday though)
The thing about boomerangs as lives and small cape Mario is that the custom powerups patch is not the least buggy thing out there.
The latest projectile Mario had (in this case the boomerang) replaces the 1up Mushroom graphic and is never fixed when you change powerups. (reminder that raocow always savestates at the end of a recording session) This did also happen with the Super Ball Flower earlier.
The reason for the cape is that the Tanooki uses the cape tile for the tail and it's still shown when Mario returns to the overworld (this isn't the last time this will happen either)

FURCON 2018 is such a drag that the first time I played the game I stopped playing at that level and didn't pick the game back up for like a week because I didn't feel like playing that level. Easily my least favorite level in the game.
The level's not really hard at all and everything you have to do in it is mostly just obnoxious (except the statue falling tube, that part's fun, but it's also really easy).
the invisible room is basically obligatory and not that bad, but doing the springboard jump at the beginning if you fall of is just waiting
the room with the mushroom is alright if not a bit obnoxious if you can't get the right timing so that you don't have to statue
the falling room is fun and I have nothing much to say about it.
The brown room is annoying and all the jumps you do in it feel really bad.
the sticky shell room is pretty much nothing.
I can't listen to that level's music anymore, it annoys me.
(butch cassidy's alright though, nothing special but still fun)

The Everlasting Mood
Evening Star gives me sweet nostalgia of sepia-toned late afternoons at the age of 9 playing the the 8bit and 16bit Sonics + Chaotix on Kega Fusion. Truly memories best left untainted by the mistakes of the modern man (or hedgehog). And if you really think about it, FURCON 2018 is what happens when you give an absolute unit of a madman like morsel the concept behind stages like Brutal Mario (or "The Daemonic King, Mario" as it is known amongst our East Asian brethren) and its のろいのやかた in the Cheap Demo. This is what happens when the West meets the East, so to say.
I'll say this about the level. I like morsel's touch in that you need to be big to reach the fursuit in the first place, echoing the problem of many aspiring young furries who desire a fursuit but do not have the exuberant amounts of money required to commission one, or the craftsmanship to forge their own. The modern day equivalent of a smith forging a knight's blade to face off against evil, fursuit making is truly a holy art bestowed by the goddesses above.
at least the real life FurCon is way better
The JUMP Team's works are honestly the antithesis to a lot of modern western hacking which distill the "ice cream flavor" dichotomy to "generic vanilla/choconilla" and "generic kaizo". In a way, they have become the new YouTube levels, they have merely naturally evolved to become socially acceptable by the standards of the current Super Mario World Central dot net community instead of being merely laughed at for unreasonable difficulty, gaudy aesthetics and rushed, thoughtless development. Though I guess some could say that development of generic hacks is even more thoughtless than a YouTube level.gbreeze wrote: this entire goddamn post

FURCON was based on this e-reader level: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7sbWKEp_FY&t=427s. My experience of that level was going in and out of doors and being very annoyed. I wanted to bring these sensations to my fellow smw enthusiasts.
Because of my inability to graphic, this level was passed over to Lazy for aestheticisation. This is why the loading times are enormous, everything in the room where you have to avoid the brown is brown, and there are hidden 1-ups that display as boomerangs.
Each room uses a different tanuki ability (statue making blocks appear, flying, statue killing things, floating, tail).
Notes on the rooms.
-The statue room didn't have a statue at first. It was added since people assumed it was just an invisible maze (some still assume this).
-The brown block room was an old cape concept room I'd made. I thought I'd try it with tanuki, beat it immediately, and decided it was fine.
-The sticky shell room is indeed a glitch, but in vanilla smw (pipe cancellation). It is implemented here to force tail usage.
I didn't name this level. I had to look up what furcon was. I found a youtube video of a man dressed as a gerbil attempting to breakdance.

Re: ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ - Super Furcon Sundance for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U - 5
butch cassidy was another one of my levels and it was just filler to break between the more intense puzzle levels. katrina had a train gfx set for c3 that was unused, and pinci had a simpsons port that was unused. i just combined both and filled it with bullshit
furcon was named sort of by me. i had the idea for a furry convention level, and then it got applied to morsels level since he used the tanooki suit. thus furcon 2018. the graphics were ripped by me from kirby mass effect which also got released for c3.

This sounds like a trip of a game.
I liked both of today's levels; FurCon might have been juuuuuuuuust a tad tedious but I didn't think it was a big issue. Maybe I'm just really easy to please? There's been a lot of "[x day's] levels were garbage" in this thread so far but I've tremendously enjoyed my viewing experience so far and don't really outright disliking very much.

Echoing that Furcon is my least favorite level in Mice. The biggest reason being that, if you die (I did), you have to start that dragon coin hunt all over again. That blows. I recognize there's nkt a lot to be done about that short of having the Jump Dargon Coins, but it still doesn't feel good if you die with 4 out of 5 dragon coins.

Yeah I appreciate every level in this game just for having a new idea of some sort, and really that's what I look for in hacks. In collaborative hacks especially, it's just a really fun time for me.Kilgamayan wrote: ↑5 years agoThere's been a lot of "[x day's] levels were garbage" in this thread so far but I've tremendously enjoyed my viewing experience so far and don't really outright disliking very much.

holy shit old simson is so goode
SMWC ASM tends to be very messy, and JUMP's "mechanics puzzle marathon" strand of level design types is kinda hit or miss for me.
Combine the two and...
also that's just idol brand existential dadaist humor™ (all lowercase), you just learn to live with it as you spend time with her

That's what a good Mario hack should make you feel. That is the exact same feeling I got from the early VIPs and some of the ASM discussion going on in the Hack Fix/Translation discord, which is why I'm back to SMW ASM hacking in the first place.CrappyBlueLuigi wrote:i read idol's post and didn't even question this until you pointed it out

Wow, we're pretty close to just porting everything from the NSMB series into SMW.
That propeller suit functioned almost exactly the same. Especially the acsent and decent speeds. And that fact that Mario spreads out his arms while doing the drill spin, is such an unnecessary detail.
I love it.
