I'm sure this thread will find some way to blame the game for this.

Re: Super Mario Bros. 3MIX - tragedy
You can't really make fun of someone for doing something when you just made up a hypothetical situation in which they do that thing.
It honestly would be good game design to save lives, but it's understandable why a romhack wouldn't think to change that.

Welp, I think we have a pretty good candidate for 'Worst raocow Brainfart 2019'.
I think this was a premier 'yell at the screen' raocow moment. But my eyes only widened at the pause screen. The yelling didn't start until raocow remarked he lost his powerup. "AND 90 LIVES!" I added. Did you forget how base Mario 3 worked?

I mean I stagger my savestates so I could reload from the start of yesterday and redo the level, but like I said in the description I want to keep playing this way. it's a genuine bad move I made and I should keep going with the ramifications.

Hey raocow, I don't have any quick and dirty infinite 1-up tricks for you like I used to, but I would say your best bet to amass a decent number of lives would be to go back to the world 0 level that had that SMB3 world 7 fortress level in it (access it from world 6) and do the coin room a few times.
Also, in case they show up again, you can kill fire chomps with fireballs if Southbird didn't tweak their parameters. :)

What lead to raocow resetting the game was a pretty rude Star Coin placement; it was right before the midpoint with no way to die if you missed it and getting it required disobeying coin guides in a blind drop, so yes, you could blame the game for that.

Re: Super Mario Bros. 3MIX - tragedy
I mean the game's not that hard anyway. And if one keeps hitting the top of those flags, we'll be back to 90 before you even know it.
Re: Super Mario Bros. 3MIX - tragedy
It didn't seem that great to me, but admittedly, I'm saying this only as a spectator. I don't have a file anywhere close to where raocow is so I can't test it myself.
Edit: I did a quick experiment, and it turns out that the game is at least keeping progress after every level. I purposefully got a game over and the only thing I lost was my midpoint in a level, so extra lives aren't that big of a deal. Good news for raocow!

Oof, watching those lives go poof was rough.

Base Mario 3? You mean the one with no saving?Sebby19 wrote: ↑5 years ago Welp, I think we have a pretty good candidate for 'Worst raocow Brainfart 2019'.

Re: Super Mario Bros. 3MIX - WE PRESENT YOU A NEW QUEST.
So I 100 percented this game but I completely forgot about this until it showed up. I don't think that's a good sign for the game's memorability but anyway I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Looks like Rao would have lost his lives anyway after beating the game. I think he would have hit the 99 cap before the finale

Did the game actually save his score and not his lives when he did his reset? I don't recall the original doing that so if that's the case it's actually kinda really weird that it'd save your score but not lives.

Re: Super Mario Bros. 3MIX - WE PRESENT YOU A NEW QUEST.
The original game didn't have saves at all, so no, it didn't save score or lives.
The All-Stars version had saves but they only allowed you to start from the beginning of any world you'd reached; I'm pretty sure that saved lives, though.

It's really weird they didn't include saving at all for SMB3, which is a decent sized game,. Zelda and Kirby had saving, and Metroid had at least a password system.

I think that the reason for the lack of saving is the fact that you can just use Warp Whistles to get back to where you were and I remember that the location of 2 of them is told (although in a rather cryptic way) by Peach in the letters.

Didn't the cart need to have a battery if you wanted a game to save?

Re: Super Mario Bros. 3MIX - WE PRESENT YOU A NEW QUEST.
The warp whistle was prominently showcased in The Wizard before the game even came out, and was thus mentioned in magazines and playground rumors for months. I suspect you're right about this - to save on producing five million+ battery-backed cartridges, they included warp whistles and disseminated info on them widely.Super Maks 64 wrote: ↑5 years ago I think that the reason for the lack of saving is the fact that you can just use Warp Whistles to get back to where you were and I remember that the location of 2 of them is told (although in a rather cryptic way) by Peach in the letters.
Re: Super Mario Bros. 3MIX - i don't have any purple coins
I think the purple coins thing is kinda neat, but the red comet ones where you just play the level again without getting hit is really lame.
