I'm a bit confused who said which path is the 'true ending'. raocow's cursor was all over the place.
If it's the path off the factory level, they are full of bollocks. If you had to choose a 'canon' ending, it would be the one that leads to Syrup's new castle. It's the only ending that doesn't require a secret exit.

I did forget that the Haunted Mansion chapter comes before the Factory-level chapter on the Treasure and Map Piece screen. I wonder why they organized it like that, since the Mansion chapter is accessed from 4-5, while the other one is from 4-4.

There is very much an ending that can be considered the True ending. That one is a good distance out, as it's the last part of the game raocow will play.

It's The Really Final Chapter, which has the unlock requirement of obtaining all map pieces and treasure.

The Mysterious Factory (the fork off from 4-4), for whatever reason, has its map pieces drop into the bottom right ("After" those from Uncanny Mansion, the fork off from 4-5), which probably leads some people who've never actually gotten the true ending to thinking it's the true ending (it's not).

Escaping the Maze Woods, Captian Syrup and her Gooms head into the city. There are lots of places to hide there. Be vigilant and thorough, Wario! Continue the hunt in the big City!

By not bothering playing B-ball with a certain city punk, Wario saves some time, and closes in on the Pirates. Syrup and her Goons try to lose him in a Haunted Mansion at the edge of the city, a place so scary, everyone involved briefly quivers at the sight of it.
You've almost closed in on them, Wario! But will you get out alive?
