Super Mario Land 2 - Soar like a rabbit
I probably shouldn't be making these video threads because I also did the thread with Keytastrophe and forgot to update the OP with video titles after the 2nd day of the series (which has now been rectified). But this game is pretty short, and I have some things to say but there's no thread.

Re: Super Mario Land - They're not fireballs, they're superballs
I really like this game. Even though it's technically ahead of my time, I actually do have nostalgia for it because my friend had it when we were little and I used to play it with him. The game is kind of quaint, being that it's the first Game Boy Mario game and just in general probably Nintendo's first attempt at a platformer on the Gameboy (citation needed), but it's got a charm to it. It does some things different from any other game in the series. The music is really great, and so many of the enemies and level themes are just weird and creepy. I like it though.
I always thought the "donut blocks" at the end of stages were Apple cores. But like, the person didn't eat it all the way down, they kind of ate the first small bit around the skin and so there's still lots of apple flesh leftover.
The dialogue at the end of castles always confused me as a kid cause it just transitions from "Daisy's" dialogue to Mario's dialogue with the only hint being a gap of space. But for the longest time I was trying to figure out why the fake Daisy was saying "Oh! Daisy" and even now that I understand it's Mario saying that, as mentioned, it's hard to tell what emotion is behind those words. It seems like a weird reaction to have. Or at the very least, maybe there should be a question mark and/or exclamation point after "Daisy"? I guess the extra character of punctuation was too much for the Gameboy's hardware to handle.

Huh, for some reason I was sure raocow had already done an LP of Super Mario Land at some point, but some searching tells me I'm wrong about that. Weird.

Re: Super Mario Land - They're not fireballs, they're superballs
Maybe you're confusing his run with mine from a few years back? I don't know. Anyway, this game's just like Dr. Wily's Revenge. It's dated, it's flawed, but it's still okay for when it came out. Problem is that unlike with the Mega Man stuff, there aren't many Mario platformers I'd put below it. Hi, Lost Levels.
The one thing I really like about this game is that the Superball can not only take out just about anything, but it also collects coins. On the other hand, I do not like falling platforms at all. It's easy to not have the momentum to get to your next jump because they fall so instantly.

Just because it's somewhat relevant:
Best official remix that was ever made. First time I heard it, I thought it was one of Brawl's original tunes (and my favorite of that). I was floored when I finally heard the GB original.

Re: Super Mario Land - They're not fireballs, they're superballs
I was introduced to this game by some family friends long, long ago. I think it was my second or third Mario game after Super Mario Bros Deluxe.
They desperately needed my help beating it, and I eventually just blasted through all the levels and bosses lol
Nice seeing raocow play through some other main mario games btw

This game always infuriated me when I had a copy of it. I only ever reached the final boss twice and beat it once. Other than that I consistently game overed on the second to last level every single freaking time.

This and Stickerbrush Symphony were the only good things to come out of Brawl.

Re: Super Mario Land - They're not fireballs, they're superballs
Two things stand out in the Muda Kingdom for me:
Firstly, the land formations here look like giant orange zesters jutting boldly forth from the sea. It always seemed like those would be a precarious thing to stand on, but Marios boots are solid ones, as we see.
Secondly, those bone fish are explicitly identified in the manual as being the remains of those fish seen in the third stage which have been eaten by Tatanga. That's really quite awful. Not only is our villain consuming his own minions, but having done so, he cannot even let them rest in peace after having given their own flesh to satiate his gluttony, but instead forces them back in to a grotesque unlife and compels them to serve him still further. Being generally sympathetic to fish and other sea creatures, I always felt the need to destroy every last one of them so as to free them from this horrible, nightmarish parody of an existence. I submit this as evidence that Tatanga, underneath that dopey smirk and general incompetence, is nevertheless the greatest monster Mario has ever faced as an antagonist.

Holy cow, a Chuck Rock reference!? That was one of the like 10 games I had for SNES as a kid and I've never met anyone else who's played it or even heard of it!
I recall trying it again on emulator on at least one occasion and it's... Nothing to write home about. But the title screen song is fantastic

Easton's the best kingdom. Good platforming setups, and yeah, you're supposed to take a running jump on to a boulder and then another right off to land on the platform above the boss.
Re: Super Mario Land - They're not fireballs, they're superballs
And then we never saw Sarasaland again.

Re: Super Mario Land - They're not fireballs, they're superballs
man... they have like the perfect opportunity to bring Sarasaland back as a kingdom in Mario Odyssey. I mean, we never thought they'd bring back Pauline into the mainline Mario games after all this time (and even gave her a new role). They could easily still do the same thing with Daisy in a DLC update.
