Re: Earthworm Jim - Sword of Righteousness
Okay, so what I THINK is happening from my recollection of the manual story is that Psy-Crow is a bounty hunter who's trying to get the suit back from Jim so it can be reasonably inferred that the races are Jim trying to escape during his trip from planet to planet. Losing means he's caught up to you and you have to fight him to get away.

Man, all of those crazy people in the comments saying the Genesis version sounds better. No way
Re: Earthworm Jim - Sword of Righteousness
In fairness, a lot of it I'd imagine would come down to "which version did they hear first" - I say this as somebody who played the SNES version and has gone on record saying I think Special Edition ruined New Junk City. It is very, very hard to argue with that guitar, but listening to all three versions of probably like half the soundtrack by this point (send help) I could absolutely hear how somebody might prefer the Genesis version's tunes if they were their first - even if a lot of them just sound like bad MIDIs to me <.<AuraLancer wrote: ↑6 years agoMan, all of those crazy people in the comments saying the Genesis version sounds better. Incidentally: On my own run a year or two ago the mechachicken

both proved to be basically free, so I never really got to hear this song in its entirety. I've been missing out ;o;- alleightbits

The blaster's rapid-fire ammo drains too quickly for "ten second meteor shower" to be a fair obstacle.

RE: Intestinal Distress not in the SNES or DOS port, from Nick Bruty (one of the devs):
Also, with the Weird music issues, normally on period hardware, there would normally be a pause there for the CD Drive to seek. Because Of the fact you're mounting the BIN/CUE, that pause isn't there, so it goes right into the next audio track before the games tells it to repeat the correct audio track. The DOS version apparently got around this by making the music repeat a few times as part of the track.
EDIT: also, look slike HCG101 updated their EWJ page. It's a good read: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/earthworm-jim/ (note that it spoils the special edition endings)
Sourcehttps://www.unseen64.net/2010/03/01/unseen-inte ... hworm-jim/Nick: In fact it was the opposite. Sega offered a last minute deal if we included an extra level for the Genesis. So I took one of my concepts and quickly mapped a level out of it, Intestinal Distress. This was pretty much done over night and I remember Mike Dietz waking me up from under my desk at around 6am with a cup of hot tea and a sympathetic look. Somehow it all came together though

Solid music selection, raocow. But -10000000 points for referring to FF6 as "FF3" once! (Even though you correctly referred to it as FF6 once, too. )
Also: Boy, that extra level sure did exist, didn't it?

Supposedly, there's an invincibility code, but I can't seem to get it to work, so instead, here's the Practice/Easy Ending:
On the Sega CD, it's just a black screen apparently. Here's the Difficult Ending (from the Sega CD version, as I can't find an upload from the Win95 version, though it's the same):

Well, now I know that if I want raocow to like something, just shoehorn in "Use Your Head".

Re: Earthworm Jim - The Great Secret of the Universe
So, lacking any particular EWJ-related nostalgia, I'm going to say that the game seems to be much better at being a bunch of random gimmick levels dressed up like a platformer than it is at actually being a platformer.

Re: Earthworm Jim - The Great Secret of the Universe
Two questions: 1) is EWJ2 getting its own thread or is it going to be part of this one?
2)What version of EWJ2 is raocow planning on playing?

Re: Earthworm Jim - The Great Secret of the Universe
Yeah, The Saturn version seems to be most widely recommended version. Might as well do this now:
Genesis: As with EWJ1, this was the original release, and considered the baseline.
SNES: Like EWJ1, The SNES version has slightly better visuals than the Genesis Version, and has reduced screen resolution. Despite that, It compares more favourably than EWJ1's comparison between SNES & Genesis.
DOS: Like EWJ1, It was CD-Quality audio and completely redrawn graphics to take advantage of 256 color VGA. This might've been the one for raocow to play, except It's missing the Lorenzen's Soil level. Also it apparently doesn't emulate well in DOSBox.
GBA: Garbage.
PS1/Saturn: Screaming Pink developed ports for the Playstation 1 and Sega Saturn. These use the same CD-Quality Audio as the DOS version, and includes some redone graphics, notably
Both versions are mostly the same, though there are some differences. Off the top of my head:
That's why the Saturn version is being played. For a comparison video, Here's a dual Longplay of the Genesis and SNES version, and a dual Longplay of the PS1 and Saturn version, with occasional clips of the other versions (there doesn't appear to be a Longplay of the DOS version):

the level name screen is now Jim in Space instead of Jim Holding a card, and the background in the Puppy Love levels changed from a town square to a bridge in front of a mountain.
. The PS1 version appears to only have been released in Europe, while the Saturn version was released Worldwide. Levels are I believe the same, thoughthe second level is now named "Lorenzo's Oil", while the level music in ISO9000 was changed to Granny Bag instead of Subterranean.

Well, I've got enough titles to go through the second game, so I guess I may as well keep this thread going.
Edit: Especially since we've got the info post here now. Might as well link those in the first post.

Isn't saturn emulation a huge pain in general? I hope everything works out!

No, not any more, thanks to Madnafen and its associated core for Libretro. Only real issue is that RetroArch might be a bit unintuitive for some, and standalone Mednafen is CLI.
