Can you be sure to thank your friend Dean for me? I super appreciate all the effort into getting this to work. :D

(Also, I'd be curious to try the virtual machine myself)

Man, for all the work it's taking to get this game running for raocow, I hope it's *good*. :P

BuzzNBen wrote: 5 years ago Here is an update for raocow on the Super Mario Bros Doomsday situation.

To track down the issue raocow is having, I made 8 executable files. Each remove a core programming function (such as loading dlls, complex transitions, and even the music). I'd like it if he can open these up one by one to see if he can get any of these to open and send me the results.

Download:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/c21cb4cjz ... 0Stuff.zip

Here is the executable list:
Super Mario Bros Doomsday.exe (Core Game)
Tests N Shiz for raocow 01.exe (Above + No MP3s)
Tests N Shiz for raocow 02.exe (Above + Reduced Tiles)
Tests N Shiz for raocow 03.exe (Above + No HUD Bar)
Tests N Shiz for raocow 04.exe (Above + No SPCs)
Tests N Shiz for raocow 05.exe (Above + No Transitions)
Tests N Shiz for raocow 06.exe (Above + No Room Generation Code)
Tests N Shiz for raocow 07.exe (Above + No Special Fonts)
Tests N Shiz for raocow 08.exe (Above + No Trigger Events)
NOTE TO raocow: I should mention, if you can get any of these versions to open and there isn't lag, that doesn't mean the problem is immediately fixed. This is just a means of troubleshooting what could potentially be causing the game to not load for you.

Might need the no transitions if they aren't critical, depending on how the next stream goes.

Is there an update on this? Did he ever get one of those to work?

Not tried, as far as I'm aware, but they were used last night to figure out a possible permanent fix on our end. A bit more work is needed but we're in the right direction.

I kinda want to play hyper 6 and just slid it in right after warioland

you have until the end of warioland to convince me either way

The current plan of action to get Doomsday in the perfect state will take more time and testing. Play Hyper 6 and have fun, I'd rather get this done right, than have it rushed and explode under duress. We will bend this game to our will, and it'll make a fun LP, but not in January.

Heck I was coming close to just saying this anyway.

I'm really looking forward to the later Wario Land games, but Hyper 6 is also a big deal. So that plan sounds perfect, assuming you continue playing Wario every other game.

I just feel like I haven't played a mario hack in a while, nor have I really suffered in a while, and hyper 6 fulfills both. I'm glad to see all this support :D

I was suggesting to FusionWarrior that perhaps you should play the prequel to Super Mario Bros Doomsday. It's another fangame that I made all the way back in 2011. It's made with a different engine (Hello Engine, yeah), but it seems to work just fine on the VM and possibly you wouldn't even need the VM to play it. It's called Super Mario Bros Attack of the Bloopers.

I don't know how it would go, but maybe it's a possibility? I'd have to make sure the game is actually playable first (since I haven't played it in a while).

It's called hyper 6 because each level in the last world takes at least 6 hours to beat. The first seven worlds of the hack are fantastic; it steadily piles up the difficulty, you begin noticing how much longer it takes to beat the levels till the climax of the world 7 castle (which took me about 3 hours), and although there are some pretty frustrating levels along the way it is still manageable. World 8 is a different level of difficulty again, with every single level requiring several hours; you can try to make it more bearable by taking capes into levels and flying over them, or practising levels with savestates before playing them properly, but this is not very satisfying and I stopped playing the hack properly at some point. The special world is all over the place with some levels short and very hard (and quite fun to play), and others going on for ever like in world 8. [At some point in this litany I should remind raocow he couldn't get through Depraved Stronghold.] Having said all this, I would love to see a raocow lp of most (the first seven worlds) of Hyper VI.

While I'm here, I may as well recommend another hard hack. levelengine is a huge fan of raocow and prolific hacker-- who else has given a shout-out to raocow in the credits of one of his hacks and built a scale model of what he thinks raocow looks like in one of his magl entries? Therefore raocow should consider playing this seasonal hack (which will be out of season if he gets to it): Christmas Balls. It's very hard and some levels will be very annoying but at least raocow will not have much time to regret he ever started it (unlike Hyper VI) as it consist of only 12 levels.

As m/m said, Hyper 6 endgame is pretty dang difficult, and often in incredibly annoying ways too. I know you might be thinking that Hyper 5 wasn't that bad, but believe me that Hyper 6 is MUCH harder. Some late game levels have taken me over 10 hours (depraved took me less then 2 for both sections), so beware. I'm also not nearly as much of a fan of the first 7 worlds, although I'll admit that there's occasionally some good stuff in there.

As for levelengine, I did not play his Christmas hack but I like his two recent full sized hacks, 'Colossus' and 'Bits and Pieces', quite a bit. However, they are really really hard as well, probably more then what raocow would be willing to put up with, so I hesitate in recommending them.

I would fully expect him to use a few savestates in the endgame. This is not me underestimating his skill at smw (as some people tend to do when discussing other hard hacks). It's just me being realistic about the fact that raocow needs to create publishable LP content within 2 or so hours of playtime, and that just isn't happening here because not only are the levels hard but they also tend to be long so every death costs a lot of time.

I believe Hyper 6 could make for a very fun series as long as raocow approaches the game with an according mindset: starting with world 8 savestates are perfectly acceptable and nobody is going to call you out on it if you put them at sublevel transitions for example.

In my opinion the way up to world 8 is a fun and challenging experience that shouldn't be entirely missed out on just because the endgame gets stupid

Alternatively he could just go for the classic castle7% playthrough
