I just looked up Megaman on Game Gear on VGMaps.com... (Yeah, it took me this long to bother.)

Wow. Talk about your budget title. It looks like three stages from MM4, three stages from MM5, and then a Wily stage, which is just Quickman's stage from 2. All of the stages are unaltered from the NES versions, with the sole exceptions being that the MEGAMANV letters are (obviously) removed from the MM5 stages. Judging by the maps, it looks like you don't even get to choose your stages. They're presented entirely in "fortress stage" style.

Of course, it's entirely possible the section on VGMaps wasn't complete, but if it *is*... that's pretty sad.

3DS Generations is a unique version, yes.

For one thing, Modern Sonic plays like the Rush games, meaning that this is the most 2D version.

For another, the bosses are different.

Aaaand there are a couple of different stages.

SAJewers wrote: 6 years agoAlso, note to raocow, you own the Genesis Sonic games on Steam (though I'd probably still recommend the PC S3K for variety)
Unless raocow is using a virtual midi driver or can otherwise force soundfonts, this is a bad idea musically. PC S3K uses midi for the music and some of the songs are different from Genesis.

yeah, of course. Standard Windows MIDI is terrible.

EDIT: there's also this https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Sonic_%26 ... MPS_Player

Should probably note i'm probably partially baised towards S&K Collection because that's how I played the game as a kid

also, he already played genesis sonic3 a few years back ( ), so be different this time :P

whether either of those are on the net, i dunno

there's also sonic jam for game.com and sonic the hedgehog for the didj custom learning system

Why is Sonic 3 collection even being considered?

Just play Sonic 3 Complete on Kega Fusion to have the best experience. It even has Mega Drive renditions of the collection-exclusive midis if you want them.

Turns out it's on the Workshop too, so I guess that covers that too (since he already owns S3K on steam.

Also, I'd probably use Genesis Plus GX over KEGA Fusion, since it seems most people prefer it (provided you're not emulating 32X), plus Fusion apparently doesn't work well on recent windows versions. Then again, this is all moot since he owns the 3 Genesis games on Steam

I specified using a dedicated emulator because the Steam version uses a REALLY BAD emulator.
But you can just get the rom from its Steam folder, rename it to .bin and use on Kega/GPGX with no problems :v

Picodrive can play 32X games. And apparently Genesis/Megadrive and SegaCD/MegaCD games as well. (Which while Pico isn't really built precompiled for Windows, it has been ported as a core for BizHawk)

I wouldn't recommend S3C for All The Sanics since it makes a few modernization changes and the impression I get from the All The Megamans is "okay how does the game fare without the nostalgia goggles?"

Yeah, it can, but most still recommend GPX via Retroatch, though both are fine

2D Sonic, to me, implies "platformer."

Skypatrol speaks for itself, and you can't even jump in Labyrinth, if I recall correctly.

Hence the silly emote. They are platformer-adjacent, though, moreso than most franchise spinoffs.

Also under that criteria I would specifically add that Sonic Spinball is in fact a platformer* and a surprisingly good one, albeit with weird physics and references to the Archie comics characters! It's also made by Sega Technical Institute, not Sonic Team, buuuut given Sonic Mania also wasn't made by Sonic Team...

*platformer-pinball hybrid

just sitting here laughing to myself because everyone's debating which sonic games should be played when there's only one worthwhile sonic game, and that's clearly sonic schoolhouse. i mean, come on guys. seriously.
